By selling your game! :D

There's a lot of ways of marketing digital media. From what I understand, Dave Gilbert (of Wadjet Eye Games) uses one (or more) of the several online stores that specialize in such. He's also of course recently had several of his games fully implemented in Valve's Steam software library.

It really depends on personal preference as far as which specific method you use, but if your game is going to be a commercial success, you're going to have to focus on quite a lot of things that might be of lesser importance in a freeware game. There's no set-in-stone rules, but grammar and punctuation, music, sound effects, voice acting, art, storyline, and length are all very important factors just to name a few.

Clearly by selling your game, but if you mean how to expose it to the point of popularity, then you want to learn how you can use the gaming press. Sites like Rock, Paper, Shotgun are always open to covering indie games of all shapes and sizes, and I know I'm keen to point good stuff out on BeefJack.com. Send places an email asking if they'd be interested in covering your game, and see what happens.
