Hi all, I'm a new guy around here. I thought I'd have something to show for myself before I posted here, so here's a background I drew, plus I added a few characters as well, to give you an idea of my drawing style. Constructive criticism and the like will be welcomed.

edit: Just edited to say that I'm aware the market stall isn't finished yet, in case some of you picked up on it.

For a first bg, it seems pretty good. You could work on the perspective though.

I disagree, an isometric perspective might just be what he's going for. It also avoids scaling issues.

I used to make games but then I took an IRC in the knee.

TheDude

I like it. The only thing i don't like is that the bushes kinda look like green puddles of acid or something depending on how you look at them, try and make them more 3D. Good work!

Rincewind

Yeah, for being your first background in MSPaint, it's really impressive!
You sure are a lot better than than I was when I started out... :)

My only critisism would be that the cardboard box looks a bit akward. It hasn't got a shadow, first of all, and secondly, the white paper/fabric on top of it also looks a bit out of place.

But on the whole, it's a great style and a nice background.
Keep on working, I'd love to see a game looking like this.

This might just be me, but I think some pictures look cool when their off perspective. GREAT WORK (for a beginner)!

Man. If you're this good in MSPaint.. The wonders you can do in Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro.

Great work.. i like the discreet texturing done with the Spray can. And I LOVE the guy in the white shirt... Nice style.. But you might want to give that devil guy some Crimson outlines.

Keep it up!

You did this great :)

you pulled it off well but personally I prefer to avoid
the spray can

Flippy_D

This looks utterly insane. The only place where I find fault with the perspective is the box/brick/cloth myriad. Otherwise, very nice.

loominous

It has some sort of consistency which makes it very likeable imo.

One matter would be the colorintensity which makes it a bit hard on the eye.

To fix it now in mspaint would take some work but for your next pic you could try using the colors in the lower section of the colorchart which shows when you click on a color in the lower menu n then 'define colors' (see pic below)

This is a very pleasant image, I think all you need is a little more consistency with shadows- the walls cast shadows over your curb, but the curb didn't cast any shadow.

I hope you don't mind, but I had a go at tweaking the white sheet and the box. Unless the sheet was meant to be caught in the wind, I think it looks more natural like this, though I'm not sure about the shadow from the box. The light's at a very tricky angle, you might have been right not to give it a shadow.:

I love the way there is a devil with a top-hat and cane standing by him, but the bald guy seems more annoyed that someone left a box in the street!

n00bie

Thanks for the replies, guys.

Loominous, I thought the colours were a bit bright, as I myself was having problems when I placed the bald guy by the wall and saw that he almost 'blended' into it. I don't have any of those proper programs like PSP, but I do have this default program called M-Soft photo editor, which allows you to adjust the colouring.

Ali, thanks for the picture, that shading and cloth image works great, I've added it to the background. The shading on the box is a little awkward to calculate accurately, I agree, but I'm just going to stick one of those small red fire-hose like things they have in America (don't know what they're called), on the corner of the street, to detract attention away from it.

TheDude, I see where you're coming from, and I'm gonna address the problem. To everyone else, thanks for the replies, praise, opinions and criticisms, it's much appreciated. Cheers.

Fire hydrants, I believe.  :)

Updated picture. I took out all the shading in the end, because it was a pain and I'm no good at it. And I can't draw fire hydrants either, so I just put a bin there.

The reds and greens on the fruit stall are probably a little too saturated for my taste, but that's being very finicky. Nice bin.
The barrel of the gun is very long, I'd consider shortening it.

Good work.

make a pic where that dude gets shot! (I'm gonna get mocked for this one)

no joke, I love your style.

I really like the isometric nature of some of the backgrounds, I think it works well and you've certainly done well using MS Paint!

However, I feel the consistency might annoy the player somewhat. (Well, it probably won't, but if you were looking hard it might)...

For example, the last background with the seal thing in a bucket thing, isn't isometric. Neither is the "Staff Only" background (although that one in my eye still "conforms" because it is very... Well, not sure of the word, but parralel. Or something!) . I think if you draw some in iso style, (which you have) you should do that with all the backgrounds (it might work, it might not) except close-ups.

Or, you could just mix and match.

What i'm saying is, I like the isometric style! :P
