Ben Jordan Case 5: Release Date - When It's Done

I've begun working on Case 5. I know I said I was taking a "long" break from game-making, but you know how it is when inspiration strikes.Ã,  At any rate, this one will probably take a bit longer to release since it's more art-intensive.Ã,  On to the good stuff:

PLOT: After the events in London, Ben has returned home for a much needed break from paranormal investigating.Ã,  One day, he gets a conference call from his friends Simon Booth and Alice Wilkins.Ã,  It seems Simon has found out about some strange murders going on in the city of Osaka, Japan, and he suspects there is a paranormal edge to the story.Ã,  Ben, Simon, and Alice travel to Japan to investigate.Ã,  However, once they arrive and start looking into the killings, they realize there is much more to the story than they first thought.

FEATURING:
- No more annoying cellular phone!
- Graphic overhaul: More realistic sprites, backgrounds, and character portraits.
- The closest to full-length Ben Jordan game yet.
- Another fine soundtrack by Ghormak.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but certainly the symbols on the sign aren't Japanese. I don't know if these kinds of things bug anyone else, but I've been coarse about people mixing up Japan and China, since the general misconception that ninjas are chinese  . Dates back to my ninja turtle times.

Yes, this has been a criticism I've taken to heart.  In this case, the notebook serves two purposes: its usual role as a reminder for important details, and also as an inventory item so you can write down things or drawings that might come in handy later.

Is it? If so, blame Canada! I made that background referencing (read:tracing) a photograph of a "Japanese Garden" in Montreal.  The symbols aren't accurate, since the photo was kind of blurry to begin with and it got more blurry when I resized it.  Far be it from me to confuse China and Japan! (It certainly bugs me when that's done).  And as a side note, there will be no ninjas in this game.

No, there won't be path branches this time around.  It's difficult to do them and not mess things up in the scope of the whole series.  However, I can tell you that the final case in the series will be the mother of all non-linearity.

Good job!  Unfortunately, there is no deeper meaning to it, other than an odd coincidence, since I guess I had the name "Alice Wilkins" floating around in my subconscious.  I myself didn't realize it until I played through BJ3 and noticed the name on the grave.

If this was indeed just a coincidence, may I suggest you build something out of it? Some of the most inventive plots in fantasy fiction have come out of attempts to resolve inconsistencies and explain coincidences.

None of that 6th Sense stuff here!  Alice Wilkins isn't exactly a unique name, it could have been a coincidence.  I've seen my name on a grave in a cemetery, and I'm not dead...am I?

However, I did realize that there's another Wilkins mentioned someplace else in the series that could very well be used as a plot device...

At first I also thought that Alice Wilkins is probably the name of some relative or friend of you and that this is why you used it twice. But it could have been intentionally. (Probably Alice is one of the Smailholm witches that died and then ressurrected again and now she's here to bring evil to all the paranormal investigators out there and only you, Grundislav, don't know about it, yetÃ,  :o ...)

What about Otto? Will he appear again sometime? I think he's the most unknown character from BJ4, all we know about him is that he has lost his wife and children but I don't remember him saying anything about what he has to do with paranormal things ...

The game is roughly 1/5 done. This means that day 1 of 5 is completely playable. Day 2 is close to being done, but this game is going to have a LOT of animations, so it's taking longer than usual. It should be out before year's end.

I wouldn't be so impatient... judging by the file size of the previous cases this will be a big file, and if the same rooms are used for each day (which will probably happen) a demo will take just as long to download as the full version. And from what I know not everyone here has rich-person internet. I would like a demo, but I'd rather wait for the full game.

*Ahem* I mean, here's a demo of Day 1.  Please bear in mind this is an old version, meaning it's pretty rough. Several animations, characters, and some conversations are missing.  But at least it makes it different enough that when the full game is released you won't already know what's coming.

It's so short it won't spoil anything I think. But it is a VERY nice demo. The most GK-like of the BJ-games so far it seems (the newspaper reading and the police station in particular). The animation was really nice. Are those new up/down walking views? They seem different somehow, but I may be imagining things. Anyway, they look great.
I also liked the way the door opened/closed on room changes, but it might get a bit repetitive if you have to go back and forth a lot. The map was sort-of difficult to read, I almost had to pixel hunt for the first couple of locations. Perhaps some more color on the icons, or desaturating the background map would help. Or even using a simpler map of Osaka.

The story seems very intriguing. I know very little about Japanese myths, but I hope you've researched the topics thoroughly so we'll learn something while having fun.

Is it just me, or did that police inspector look like Keanu Reeves?

The demo is great so far. But I found a walk-behind bug in the evidence room:



And about the map. Right now it looks like a photo of a real map. It's a bit too pixelated and dodgy. You should print it, draw over it, and color it yourself. It should look simpler, so that the locations are easier to see.

EDIT: So I finished the demo and I was very confused when Day 2 came up. I checked all locales, but everything was 'under construction'. Maybe this is bugging me too much, but there should've been some ending dialog to the demo.

Yeah, I'm not going to play it until the full game is released. I know what the Ben Jordan games feel like, and would prefer to be able to play it all in one sitting, like I did the other games.

As for the map, that is one of many differences that I've fixed. It is much easier to read in the full game.

Ahhhh. Ben Jordan. I have played a ton of AGS games, but Ben Jordan is the only one I actually kept on my hard drive after beating. All four are good, quality games, and I can't wait for the next one. Being a real-life paranormal investigator (I have worked with TAPS, with the southern virginia ghost hunters society, and am the executive director of ESPER (www.theespers.org) ) this type of thing is my cup of beef stew, even when it's fictitious. I am working on a game about supernatural/occult investigation myself which is a little more gritty, based on a series of novels I wrote a few years ago that are getting ready to get published. I speak Chinese and read some of it...have learned to from birth. I can tell you from experience that a lot of japanese symbols look EXACTLY the same aas Chinese symbols, though they may not have the same meaning. In fact Japan in Japanese looks the same as Japan in Chinese. Plus the writing on the temple thing is really too blurry to know for sure what the symbols are. Japanese architecture can look similar to Chinese architecture too. The Japanese really copied a lot from the Chinese, not that that'a bad or anything. They used the written Chinese language to form their own, so there really is no surprise that many characters are exactly the same.

I've thought about it, but decided against it for several reasons:

1. Talkies make a game's filesize significantly larger.
2. It's very hard to find good amateur voice actors and keep the same file quality, volume, etc.
3. I'll only make the series a talkie if I can get John Cleese to play the part of Percival Quentin Jones

I literally just got electricity back 5 minutes ago.

As I'm sure you know, we had Hurricane Wilma here in Florida on Sunday the 23rd. I have been without power for the past 2 days.Ã,  Therefore, this has been a partial reason for BJ5 being delayed, and, to tell you the truth, after this ordeal, the game is the last thing on my mind at the moment.

I literally just got electricity back 5 minutes ago.

As I'm sure you know, we had Hurricane Wilma here in Florida on Sunday the 23rd. I have been without power for the past 2 days.  Therefore, this has been a partial reason for BJ5 being delayed, and, to tell you the truth, after this ordeal, the game is the last thing on my mind at the moment.

Hounding == Repeatedly asking about the game when it's clearly stated that it will be released when it is ready.

Since this thread has been dug up yet again, I feel I should give everyone the official answer:

I was stupid to predict a release date. I have learned my lesson and won't announce any further BJ titles until they are ready for release.

As for Case 5, the game is ready to go, all that is left to be done is some of the music, however Ghormak has gone home for the holidays and I will soon be taking a vacation, so BJ5 will not be released before January 2006.Ã, 

Please understand that the game WILL be released, just not soon.Ã,  I'm sorry I've made everyone wait so long.
