I, personally think it's "Telegraph Road (live version)" by Dire Straits. I think neither Hendrix nor Page could outmatch Knopfler's solo play in that particular song (after the "like a rollin river" part).

I'm very late with my response, but I've just discovered this topic. This is one of the greatest things ever written on these forums. I absolutely totally completely LOVE Telegraph Road (both versions), it's my favorite song ever (not to mention that Dire Straits are my favorite band and Knopfler my favorite guitar player) and it really makes you wonder why the heck they never tried that kind of progressive music again.
Another gem is the live version of Sultans of Swing (from Alchemy live album) with its extended solo at the end.

None shall pass!

Awww harvester, from YOU I was expecting some Uriah heep too!

Some more additions:
Dire straits - Your latest trick
Styx - Come sail away
Andrew Lloyd Webber - Heaven on their minds, Gethsemane, Superstar(All from Jesus Christ Superstar)

Harvester

Don't worry, Vel, Uriah Heep coming soon, when we talk about progressive rock!

Oh. My. God. I just got Ken Hensley's last album and I must say its magnifficent!
A definite addition to my list:
Ken Hensley - The last dance

Tuomas

King Crimson - Epitaph... it...just...IS

Erenan

I like "Starless" by King Crimson.
The Bunker

kaputtnik

Velvet Underground - Heroin
Led Zeppelin - Stairway to heaven
The Doors - Break on through
Hüsker Dü - Don't wanna know if you are lonely

Things that can only be called "rock".
I, object.

sic_one1

Oomph! - Augen Auf
Rammstein - Feuer Frei
Megaherz - Dein Herz Schlaegt

All tied. I don't expect anyone to know these bands unless they are german. In my case german/canadian.

Al_Ninio

Yeah, who's heard of these "Rammstein" whippersnappers?

dasjoe

..gnah. i won't say anything about that bands, i don't want to start a flamewar.

and ignoring the fact that there is no BEST ROCK SONG EVAR!!:
Oasis - Gas Panic!
Babyshambles - Fuck Forever
Tomte - Korn & Sprite
an oasis-parody, kinda.. "i'm feeling supersonic, give me gin and tonic"
Tocotronic - Ich habe Stimmen gehoert
best new song from tocotronic. i won't list the old great and maybe even better ones
Slut - Why Pourquoi? (I think i like you)
The Doors - Alabama Song / Whiskey Bar (alabama song)
Interpol - Slow Hands
Kante - Best of Both Worlds
Die Sterne - Fickt das System

this could change any second. but tocotronic, kante, die sterne and tomte will always be in my list. always.
... it's quite easy being the best.

Now I'm little late. Sultans of swing are as you said true jewel but so are all almost all that things from Alchemy. Knopfler's fingers almost fell off after that concert.

Just recently discovered there is one song I just want to hear again and again, and my body can't stand still while hearing it. It has rythm, melody, makes incredibly fun and doesn't get out of your head. Plus, you want to yell the chorus, too!! Could jump aorund the whole time while I'm hearing it.
Well, I speak of  Enfilade by At The Drive-In. With Iggy Pop blackmailer at the beginning. Whoa, want to hear it again!!  :D

Kinda wish the band would still exist, though I didn't know them when they still were around, otherwise we wouldn't have the opportunity then to listen to the godmade music of The Mars Volta.
Also there is Sparta, the other band which resulted from the split, they are pretty nice, but sadly not that amazing.

Hello mother Leopard. I have your cub.

Yes, Enfilade is quite nice.
I prefer Cosmonaut though. :D

And Sparta... not nice. Horrible. :(

I just assumed....I only know two songs from them, not an entire album.
The band members are actually very nostalgic about their past, they wish the old times back. It's not hard to guess that they aren't pleased themselves with what they are doing.
Probably the creative counterpart that Rodriguez and Bixler were is missing now.

Sparta = Crappa.

Amusingly though, they supported Blink 182 on tour here.
