Da New Guys: Day of the Jackass

[/a]

The sequel to the original wrestling comedy.

Story

Brain - the worst brawler in the history of the Wrestle Zone - has won the title belt! Not even his team-mates Simon and Defender can believe it. But when Brain gets kidnapped (along with the belt), it's up to them to get him back.

Street-fights, car chases, and obssessed fans all stand in the way of Brain's rescue. But as the reluctant heroes find themselves descending ever deeper into in the city's darkest corner, they learn that their problems are only just beginning...

  • Explore eight locations around the city, with more than 70 screens

Screens

As I'm writing this, the box below tells me the last time I edited this page was in 2007.  So this took a while to get done!

I await cries of "sell out!": this is now a commercial release, and being published by Wadjet Eye Games.  Trust me though, being able to spend some serious time on this means it's a MUCH better game for it.  It's considerably longer, properly voiced, tested, polished, achievement-ed, and it's coming out the end of the month!  Also, it's pretty darn cheap.

For now, there's a new trailer and demo to try out.  Enjoy!

Wow, the first game was great and in my opinion the only things that needed improvement were the graphics and the music(kind of, it was nice, but it wasnt original). It seems that you have taken care of these rather minor gripes, except for the blocky wrestler, although that's a really tiny thing. Hope we can play this soon, thumbs up!

Ubel

A sequel? Great! I really enjoyed the first one and I trust this one's gonna be even better. :D

I won't try the demo because when it comes to a very good game, I want to play the finished version. Demos usually take pretty much away from the gaming experience.

Good luck with this!

IceMan

I chose the content of the demo carefully so that it wouldn't detract at all from the main game.  The real purpose of it is to show the style of the game, but if you're sure that's cool with me.   8)
Thanks for the comments!

PsychicHeart

graphics look nice. Even better than the original. Well, congratulations on this undertaking and good luck!
Formerly known as Flukeblake, Flukezy etc.

IceMan

Heh, the blocky wrestler is intentional.Ã,  Something arty about being simple so looking simple (actually, I just got used to him looking like that)Ã,  :)

Al_Ninio

Is that Fatman in the third screenshot? :D
Looking good, keep it up!

Shane 'ProgZmax' Stevens

Looks good, just make sure you disable the tab key to open the inventory, it crashes the game ;>.

IceMan

Oops, didn't see that!Ã,  Ã, ;D
Heh, thanks.Ã,  Here's another bg (took ages)

Ubel

Wow, great background! Those graphics are so much better than in the first game. Keep it up! :D

Mozesh

And so I am back from my holiday and this is what I've been waiting for ;D
Looks really great Iceman, playing the demo right now.
The graphics look much better than the first part but still has the same feeling to it :)

IceMan

Hey there, been a while since any update, so here's a bit of info:

I've been planning the next location of the game, and it's going to take a whopping 13 screens.Ã,  In other words, the game's going to be a LOT longer than the original.Ã,  Where the first had around 10 NPCs, this one already has 20!

Production's going to be on hold for a few weeks now.Ã,  I'm off travelling tomorrow and I won't be back till mid-September.Ã,  In the meantime, here's another screenie:

Mozesh

IceMan

Well, I'm back now, so I thought I'd give some sort of status update.

Right now, I'm re-writing ALL dialogue conversations.Ã,  The game's now using dialogue "icons" (like in Broken Sword / Sam N Max), because with it I can make the dialogue flow 10x better.Ã,  Took me a while to figure how to script icons, until I thought of using inventory items as topics.Ã,  The topics you can talk to each character about is decided by what that character is holding in their inventory.Ã,  The game then sets THAT character as the player character, then displays their inventory items, so you can click on each dialogue topic.Ã,  (If that makes sense)Ã,  That way adding/removing topics is as easy as AddInventory / LoseInventory.

As for the game itself, let me break it down.Ã,  It's split into 4 parts (no chapter selection screen as of yet, though):

Part 1)Ã,  Needs a little tidying up, but pretty much done.Ã,  More of a prologue, really.Ã,  (The demo takes place in the second half of this part)
Part 2)Ã,  A HUGE part, because it uses LOADS of new graphics and locations.Ã,  Lots of puzzles, which means lots of bugs to fix and polish to shine.Ã,  Coming along very nicely, though.
Part 3) Major part.Ã,  Some big scenes are in this part, and the tone needs to be just right.Ã,  Constantly reworking, and will be a lot of work when it's been designed, since it's set in an entirely new location.
Part 4) Still under design, though re-uses a lot of graphics from Part 2.Ã,  Being the end, it'll have some very cool in it though, so it should be fun to make.

So when will it all be done?  Not for a while yet, I'm afraid.  I've got college again just round the corner, so work will have to slow a bit.

TheCheese33

I really like your work, IceBox. You are amazing! I was thinking; after you graduate from college, you could make your own commercial company, and make a deal with Steam, so they would sell and distribute your games for you! I really think your games are THAT good!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
need...More...WOUND!

IceMan

Heh, thanks Cheese.Ã,  But DotJ will remain firmly freewareÃ,  8)

Here's another background to gander at: this one's the map screen!

Mozesh

Wow :o really nice Chris, how about a little progress report :)

PyroMonkey

The first game was great, and so is the demo! Good luck with this! :=

IceMan

Thanks guys :)
I know that last pic's a little dark, but it looks fine full-screen.  If you look closely, you can see all the locations from the first game (Cosmic Burger, the warehouse, the billboard).  This doesn't mean you go back to all of them in this one, but I just thought it'd be cool to show where they are and stuff.

As far as progress goes, m0ds and The Scorposer have joined the project, and are doing some great work.  Recently they've been working on some variations on Ice Cold's theme (he has a bigger role this time around).

Part 3 (of 4) has been planned out now, and partially scripted.  It took a while to get the length/tone/difficulty right, but I think I got there in the end.  I think the 1st game was a little too easy, so I've put in a puzzle that is, potentially, insanely difficult.  (Maybe I'll tone it down ;))

Right now there's a whole bunch of bgs to do, and I tend to blitz through a load in one.  I'm being select about what screens I put up, though - don't want to give anything away!

IceMan

Update - 28 April: Abandonia reloaded have posted an interview about Da New Guys.  Get the low-down on how the infamous trio came about, and read about Day of the Jackass!

Layabout

The sprites in the screenshots look inconsistant. Is there a reason for this?
I am Jean-Pierre.

Ubel

That was a very interesting interview. I'd like to hear a little progress report from you, now that you've brought this thread up again anyway. Good to hear you're still working on this. :)

IceMan

Layabout: If you're referring to the 2nd guy in the 2nd screenshot, yeah, that's intentional  :)

Pablo: Yup, the game's going full speed ahead now after an unfortunate but essential snooze.
As for the game's progress...

Part 1: Done
Part 2: Pretty much done
Part 3: Needs fine tuning, otherwise done
Part 4: Gameplay's done, just needs the graphics
Part 5: Short but VERY graphic intensive.  Will take time

After that there's the usual sound FX, voices and the like that need doing.  Also, I'm planning a couple of unbelievably cool cutscenes that you'll have to see twice!  Yes, they're going to set the release date back a bit, but it'll be worth it.

Roll on summer!

IceMan

Like the original, DNG 2 will be set over the period of one day (hence the title, duh!)

So, to prove that it's not all set at night:

:)

fentongames

That's a brilliant picture! This game looks awesome! Is that Ice Colds kid up there or something?  ;)

I LOVED the original Da New Guys and this one looks evan better! A few questions for you:

It's pretty close to Summer 2006, so is the game near completion? Perhaps a progress report will be good!

Have you started on these incredibly cool cutscenes yet?

Can I be a voice actor in this game if you haven't cast some of the actors that weren't in the 1st game yet? (I have a british accent but I can put on a US accent if you want.

Spoiler
Does Mrs Pencilwood still sound like a man?  ;)
[close]

Will Smiley Joe be back in this game?

And that's about it. Good luck with the game, the demo is brilliant!
Time Kid, coming this summer.

IceMan

Sorry I didn't see your reply, fenton!Ã,  Would've replied sooner if I didÃ,  ;)
Thanks for the support, and to answer your questionss:

1) Yes, that's Ice's son Jimmy (Ice is using him as an excuse to see the puppet show)
2) The game is now very close to the post-production stage.Ã,  By that I mean the game itself is almost done.Ã,  After that comes music, speech, and general tidying up.Ã,  (Now would be a great time for Lucasarts Pamela support, Pumaman!!!!)
3) Yes, the cutscenes are being worked on now, but I'm having to wait for a certain fellow AGS-er to finish some 3d-work *cough* Mozesh! *cough*Ã,  ;)
4) If I get this right, all but Steve and the trainer from the original return in the sequel, and there are about a dozen new characters.Ã,  I'll probably do as many voices as I can (like in the original), but maybe I can find a cameo role for you or something!Ã,  Sorry I can't be less vague, but I'm not thinking about the voices much yet...
5) Yes, she does sound like a man!!Ã,  However, she only has one line (hey, it hurts my throat to do itÃ,  ;D)
6) Yes, SJ is back.Ã,  But rest assured, this is far from the old "villain from the first one seeks revenge in the second" plot...

ETA: September.Ã,  Sorry about pushing it back like this, but the game is undergoing MAJOR polishing, and will be well worth the wait.Ã,  That said, I'm really pushing to get it done before college starts again in October.

Here's hoping, and it's about time we had another sneak:

Mozesh

That looks awesome Ice, and yes I know. I've bought a new PC a little while ago, so no more 20 crashes a day for me. I've just installed my program again and I'll work on it when I get back from work. Something will get done today! ;)

Ubel

September, eh? So soon, yay. \o/

guybrush

Ohhh niice.. Original is one of my favourite AGS games, I loved three playable characters.
Day of the Jackass looks just GREAT! But keep the great gameplay of the original, too!
SPY FUNCTION-- My first game
C O M I N G   S O O N !

IceMan

Well, after over 2 years of work, the game has finally entered post-production!

This is a huge milestone, because now all the actual AGS stuff has been done.  All that's left now is other stuff like the soundtrack, speech pack etc. (while hoping we get some updated support for Pamela lip-synching  ;))

So, this isn't an announcement of imminent release, but the game is on it's way.  The current stats now stand at over 1700 sprites and more than 50 screens.  It'll be a big 'un.

OK! I didn't want it to post cause I was embarased (you may not remeber why) xD
But geeeeeeee I Really want to play this game, I loved the first one, I saw the two endings and played the game twice... Are you going to make all the voices again?

Edit: Wasn't the lamp on the other side of the coach?  ;D

GOOD LUCK

Lamp?Ã,  Coach?

I'll do MOST of the voices this time around.Ã,  I'll probably post a recruitment ad in a week or so for the lead female.

EDIT: Do you guys want a chapter selection screen this time around?Ã,  Did anyone use it in the first game?

Hammerite

only when i accidentally lost all my saves
i used to be indeceisive but now im not so sure!

fentongames

About the lamp and the coach:
He means the lamp in the first screenshot of Da New Guys's room. In the first game, it was on the other side of the COUCH. Not the coach.Ã,  ;)

About the chapter selection screen:
I used it for the alternate ending and just to get to other parts faster.

By the way, if anyone wants to play the second ending straight away without having to play through the whole game:
Spoiler
Press Tab in the main menu and go to Part four.

I don't know if I'm the first to spot this, but it's here if you need it.Ã,  ;D

About the voices: I want to do a voice (as I said earlier), but I would prefer to just be a minor role. Not a main character.
Time Kid, coming this summer.

IceMan

Oh, THAT lamp!  Blimey, you guys don't miss much, do you?  :)
I just moved it because of the changed perspective.

And thanks: I think I'll put in a chapter screen again.  It's always tricky not to give too much away on it, though!

Ohh well coach, couch.  ;D

About the episode selection screen, I've never used it, and I've played the game twice, but maybe someone else did.

High time for an update, methinks  ::)

First of all, sorry for missing the summer release date.  I could try aiming for a new one, but then I've been saying "next month" for about 6 months now  :)  I will, however, say that it can not POSSIBLY take that much longer: it's high time this thing came out!

Anyway, the least I can do is tell you some of the recent developments!  Yay!

1) Voicework is taking longer than hoped.  I've been ad-libbing a lot of new jokes while doing the voices, which really makes the game more fun, but then I have to go back and code them in properly.

2) Britney Brimhall (of Himalaya Studios) has kindly agreed to voice the lead female!  Revealing any more would be a spoiler, so let's just leave it at that  ;)

3) M0ds and The Scorposer are collaborating to bring you a full MP3 soundtrack, that's becoming a great mix of orchestral/hard rock.  Anyone who's watched wrestling on TV will instantly recognise the over-the-top style  ;D

4) The game will also feature a full audio commentary - from the trio themselves!  Unlike say, The Adventures of Fatman (where you clicked on a button in each room and had to sit still while you hear an audio clip), this will be as close to a DVD-style movie commentary as I can make it.  The gang will comment on what you do / who you talk to / what happens in general, point out fun things to try, and even start talking amongst themselves if you don't give them anything to talk about.

Well, that's all for now.  I'm hoping to get a new website together (ie. one that I'd be proud to call mine  :P) and hopefully a fun trailer too!

Bye!

thewalrus

It has been a very long time since IceMan has posted any updates. Not to mention it is clearly overdue on any sort of date. Though, more recently on the web site, he posted some concept art for the first game. Should be of interest, hm?

So ... did you intentionally wait until this was more than 90 days old to break the rules and post a bump?

I'm more inclined to think you simply didn't read the rules.  Please do so now and do not dig up any more threads.

Iceman - I'm locking this.  If you want to post an update, let me know and I'll unlock it.

Unlocked per request!

IceMan

Sorry for being so quiet about this production of late!  You may have noticed I've removed the estimated release date from the first page - instead of letting anyone down again with missed deadlines, just know that it is coming.  I realise lots of people are waiting for this, and I'm really trying to make sure it's worth it.

In the meantime, check out this promotional track we've prepared!  Listen in on the game's development as Da New Guys themselves "appeared" on their local radio station.  ;) Enjoy!

Looks ace!

Did you manage to get automated lip-sync going, or did you end up doing it the long way? I can't see any resolution to the whole issue after a forum search!

IceMan

#61
Thanks!

Lip-synching was surprisingly easy, once I found out how.  First I used smiley's Automatic Lipsync Plugin to generate .pam files for each speech file (just double click the audio file, press start and it does a pretty good approximation).  Then I renamed all .pam files to .dat, and wrote a module (using some long-lost code here as a basis) that reads the file and manually overrides the character's frames when talking.  Bit of a hack, but it works.

Anyone want the module?  I'll upload it if so - I always wanted a way of having lip-synching in Lucasarts-style games and it's the only way I know of doing it.

Anyone want the module?  I'll upload it if so - I always wanted a way of having lip-synching in Lucasarts-style games and it's the only way I know of doing it.

Yes please!  I would appreciate it greatly.

Great stuff Iceman! It was epic way back when...so it must be bloomin' awesome now! And it looks it. Love that map screen. Best of luck with your release!
