Root of all Evil, a Reality-on-the-Norm game.

Today is Mika's birthday, and of course this is an excellent reason to throw a party. In a town like this, inviting all your friends is easy. There is just one thing missing...

Money. Parties can be expensive, and Mika is remarkably short on money. Still, it should be possible for an enterprising photographer to make some quick cash...

Featuring pirates, private eyes, archaeologists (well, not really), a fully functional camera, and of course a crazy homeless weirdo.

Download here.

In a bit of background information, there was this big thread a few months ago about how to revive RON, and comments about the current state of the collaborative city. At a certain point I realized I was taking the negative approach by criticizing, and decided to instead take the positive approach of writing a RON game myself. Of course, I had ATOTK to complete first. September's MAGS proved to be an excellent opportunity.

I realize I'm not a RON oldbie and I certainly haven't played every RON game (or even most; there's quite a lot of them). I suppose it's possible that this game breaks continuity, or does something inappropriate to some character. That is, of course, not my intent; if something like that is wrong, please let me know and I'll update the game accordingly.

Root of all Evil, a Reality-on-the-Norm game.

This is such great news. I got in touch with RON games when I was first starting to play adventure games and they really help me falling in love with the genre!!!

Two thumbs up!! and hopefully some day I'll create my own RON game!!!

Neat game, but spotted some bugs, I'm afraid. It's possible to repeat the action with the candle and then give the found object to the Baron again, thus acquiring a second reward. Also McPegleg reappears in the bank next to his lookalike if the player leaves and returns to the building.

Thank you very much for releasing a RON game.
Not just because it's great for the community, but also because it takes a bit the pressure off me to release my own one.
I don't know why, but I felt and maybe still feel responsible to release mine as soon as possible, though I don't have time for it, really.
I will play it and tell you if it breaks continuity. I know RON pretty well. :D

Edit: Well, lol, it's like you tried to emulate the typical average and amateurish RON game. The reuse of backgrounds and objects is hilarous.
But the dialogues are good. And I liked the photo idea.

So great!! Thank you for getting this together; getting this nice fresh spark into RON!

I did not recognise the locations right away and while playing it even felt a bit out-of-RON to me, but after I had finished the game I came to realise that I DID see this part of town before and you actually used a main part of the established map... these locations were featured in 'Rend', right? This is actually really great! Cheers to you for getting these obscure parts more into the spotlight!

I really liked the dialogues, the jokes and the game in general. There are some very nice puzzles in the game and the working camera (& its use in puzzles) is one very, very neat touch.
I can also appreciate the use of red herrings!

The one thing that I did find quite annoying was that I didn't see the point of some puzzles & parts of the game until the ending. It wasn't clear to me at all why I had to 'get rid of' Max & Hooky. Only afterwards I realised that it wasn't so much about getting them out of their locations... With the leaflet being on a different building than the store, and the changing number inside the store seeming to be nothing more like a jokey detail, I thought this whole goal was rather unclear. It also seemed strange to me that the dialogue with Biggs (or is it Vicks) featured a bit about him giving up smoking, but using the cigarettes on him or anywhere near him wouldn't give any response.
In the end, the objectives made sense to me. In hindsight I liked the game better than while I was playing the second half! This may just be me, though (and my girlfriend who played it with me).

I also found the interface a bit clumsy to use. It was a bit weird not to be able to use inventory items on each other, for instance.

I had downloaded the game the day after it was released so I got the buggy version too (you could also find the lighter again and again), which was a bit of a shame (felt a bit messy, slightly rushed even). I also found another weird bug: using the camera in the restaurant gives visions of the future... (interesting plot!)

But never mind the whining. Overall I'm very positive about the game, and very happy about somebody releasing a new RON-game of such a quality! So will you send it to the RON-homepage too, or are you waiting for a redesign of that site (as discussed some months ago)?

Heel goed gedaan! Hartelijk dank!

Radiant

Thanks!

The game was slightly rushed - it's a MAGS game, after all :) I can easily add some responses for item-on-item usages, and e.g. having Vicks respond to the ciggies. The focus on non-standard locations, by the way, is intentional, as is the GUI - I tend to put new and somewhat unusual GUIs in all of my games.

I've spoken Renegade Implementor wrt adding it to the RON site. I'd like to have it on there, but I the registration captcha doesn't appear to work.

RoaE has been added to the RoN site, and the issues regarding forum registration have been sorted.

Sorry for the random post, but I'm trying this RON game out, and am having a problem with the inventory.  No matter how I pull it up (tab button, Esc, or F1), when I click on any inventory item, the entire thing disappears.  Makes it a little hard to use anything this way.   :=

Anyone who has played this game (and remembers) can give me a bit of help??  Thanks if so.

Indeed it's a bit awkward but once you've selected the item, it is part of your context. The cursor won't change but you can use the object  with or on other objects. You can read the selected object in your status bar at the top.

Please post in the Adventure Talk and Chat forum, Sarah. This is not the place :)

\--EDIT--\
Oops, no wonder there wasn't a LOCK option, this isn't the GiP forum!

Sorry, Sarie ;D

SarahLiz

Uh-oh...sorry about that Snake if I went about this post the wrong way...my mistake!   :'(  And Leon--thank you kind sir, I didn't even try "using" any of the objects.  A total blonde moment for me!   ::)

Appreciate the responses!

This is an old (2007 anyway) Ron game Capt.
Worked on Strangeland, Primordia, Hob's Barrow, The Cat Lady, Mage's Initiation, Until I Have You, Downfall, Hunie Pop, and every game in the Wadjet Eye Games catalogue (porting)

Well, obviously Mika celebrates her birthday every year, so this game can be played anew every twelve months :P
