To wite a haiku,
Do you do five sylables,
Then seven then five?

There are other ways
But this thread's five-seven-five

Japanese haiku
adhere to quite stringent rules.
But they're not too hard.

Traditionally,
five, seven, five, and that's it.
No more and no less.

Also, there's Tanka
five, seven, five, seven, then
another seven.
They are longer, but not much.
Just enough for one more thought.

The 'ku' in haiku
means a statement or a phrase.
where 'ka' means "a song"

About "Nihon-go",
It's a language of rythm.
one letter, one beat.

I speak, as you know
of the Japanese "Kana":
Phoenetic letters.

However, you see,
A true haiku should really
pertain to nature.

It's known as 'Kigo'
A reference to the season
the haiku takes place.

The season theme is
what makes a haiku "haiku".
without, it's just talk.

Not to say that one
Haiku is better than most,
just 'cause of the theme.

And lastly, by me,
A haiku I wrote last year,
Under my penname.

Aki no Matsu.
Ga, momiji wa mada,
ochinu mama.

(The end of autumn.
Yet the colorful fall leaves,
remain unfallen)

It is a pity,
The forum does not support
text in unicode.

He be native to these poems
Can write them good too.

SpacePirateCaine

I'm not quite native,
But I do live in Japan
and go to school there.

Why is Haiko good?
I never quite understood
then try it I should

Help I need today
boredom seems to come my way
I frown in dismay

Study, train and work
I would need - somehow - to perk
or play De Zale (Cirque)

Work, study and train
Glossaries are learnt in vain
Tired is my brain

BruisedWeasel

silently sneaking
creeping back to page the first,
haiku has returned

Not used ags
a year it collects the dust
wasting time in irc

Gabbing 'bout tv
movies, toys, rate my kitty
but never the games

Why return to here?
forums are lacking substance
I don't play the games

Contemplating 'bye'
Just like in past times, perhaps
but, what keeps me here?

Nice group of guys (girls)
Dedicated man Chris Jones
true freeware, I pee

Tough choice, bruised weasel
"What game you working on?" none
Why /do/ I come here?

The Web site you seek
Can not be located, but
Countless more exist.

Chaos reigns within.
Reflect, repent, and reboot.
Order shall return.

Program aborting
Close all that you have worked on.
You ask far too much.

Windows NT crashed.
I am the Blue Screen of Death.
No one hears your screams.

Yesterday it worked.
Today it is not working.
Windows is like that.

Your file was so big.
It might be very useful.
But now it is gone.

Stay the patient course.
Of little worth is your ire.
The network is down.

A crash reduces
Your expensive computer
To a simple stone.

Three things are certain
Death, taxes and lost data.
Guess which has occurred.

You step in the stream,
But the water has moved on.
This page is not here.

Out of memory.
We wish to hold the whole sky,
But we never will.

Having been erased,
The document you're seeking
Must now be retyped.

Serious error.
All shortcuts have disappeared.
Screen. Mind. Both are blank.

I ate your Web page.
Forgive me; it was tasty
And tart on my tongue.

Look at me people
I can say many haikus
Like this next one here:

I will say haikus
For no good reason until
I do something else

Lots of these haikus
Are witty and very smart
Wait, no, that's not true.

I am so bored man
I just do this to kill time
I am still bored man

I think you should all read this:

"A Call for the Complete Elimination of Joke Haiku Production on the Internet: A Proposal to the Internet Community" by Paul H. Henry.

It's true when you think about it. And as if to prove its point:

Indeed I have been
convinced by this article
not to write haikus.

Seriously though. Read it and feel thoroughly struck down by its awe-inspiring respect for Japanese art.

Oh no, run away
here comes Bluke, the thread killer
soon this thread may die

You see my last post?
In this thread? It killed before.
It may kill again

So beware, haikus,
you may be lost yet again
Bluke is a menace

Pay no attention
to the other three haikus
they speak many lies

Ah, Japanese art

This man is a jerk
What does it matter at the end of the day
Because haiku has been around for a long time, I can't make fun of it?

There, hopefully that haiku will make his head explode.
