Oh Shit! Fucking Hell!
I who wrote kickass haikus
see it be missing

All lines, as reply
to haiku ruler Ghormak
evapourated!

God dam this browser,
I will bloody rewrite it
for your eyes only:

------------------------------------
God dammit, Ghormak!
Using five syllable word
as haiku ending?!

Ingenious and
simply unsurpassable!
How can we top that?

What's left to use is
onomatopoethic
words as "bbrrrml" and "prawn"

Small frogs in a pond
Is often the main subject
Of several hai-ku.

Why the Japanese
Are so very obsessed with
Them is beyond me.

Personally, I
Enjoy hai-kus starring the
Less wet animals.

Like bunnies and deer
Or perhaps some sort of bird
Like a fat chicken.

Fat chicken in a
Pot, simmers until very hot.
Then we can eat it.

Delicious chicken
Now to cook and eat the eggs.
What a bird-filled meal!

Dear LasNaranjas,
that was a very good post.
Educational.

But this has six sounds!
See: Ed-u-cay-shi-on-al
You have misplaced awe.

Eric my outburst
was because the thread didn't stop
I did not disrupt

I'm not veteran
in the art of the haiku

Poor poor flippy_d.
He pronounces it all wrong:
Ed-u-cay-sho-nal!

But do not blame him,
since he is American
Can't help it you see.

Esseb misinformed
I am not American
Not by a long shot

I am a Britain
Like CJ and Mark Lovegrove
You are in the wrong

I pronounce it right
tis Ed-ju-cay-shi-on-nal
Say it slowly and hear

Can you hear it now?
Remember the syllables
are word parts, not sounds.

You say shio-on-nal
very fast and it sounds like
I am in the wrong

Pronounciation
is harder than it looks, yes?
You will learn in time*

Cap'n Pestilence
Your animation has thought?
I am quite confused

This is quite normal
I am always confuséd
I twist syllables!

To make the words fit
I use punctuation
If it goes or not

I like haiku thread
It reveals great joyfulness
It is very zen

I believe it is
modern readers who added
these rules to haiku.

few masters used the
"seventeen syllable" rule
no ancient artist

Since "enlightenment"
formalism has reigned supreme
the rules of writers

Still it can be fun
Revelry in written rules
perfection of words

perfection of choice--
words of ancient mastery
always was the way.

Today's translations
miss so much of the old words--
caligraphy too.

Below are some of my favourite old haikus--missing "red wheelbarrow" of course, on which so much depends--read them carefully, word by word and then line by line to get the full affect.  Only two authors come to mind.

BASHO

viewing the moon
no one at the party
has such a beautiful face

where's the moon?
as the temple bell is —
sunk in the sea

chrysanthemum's scent
in the garden a worn-out sandal
just the sole

without turning
into a butterfly, autumn deepens
for the worm

"I'm tired of kids."
for the person who says this
there are no flowers

lightning ~
into darkness plunges
   a night-heron's cry

SHIKI

wet feet
of a sparrow along
   the covered way ~

Witness you this thread
How far reaching it has grabbed
One who claims we gods

I kneel before you
As god myself bewildered
But witness my skills:

Here's the tricky part
If your mother only knew
Bah boom bshhh bah boom

Eric will like it
Inside jokes can isolate
Yet others rejoice
