The game is graphically well done (expecially the BGs) and has some very, very witty dialogues. I hope the author will come up with an english translation as soon as possible, it would please many "international" gamers!

Guest

Looks pretty neat, cant wait for the translation.

Just one question though, are you sure that your midi files were compressed and not infact inflated by converting them to MP3, since that would surely be a world first?

I've recorded them with sound-forge and save them as *.mp3 ;)

QuoteI've recorded them with sound-forge and save them as *.mp3 ;)

But surely the original .mid file is actually smaller in size than the resulting .mp3? I mean the mp3 format was never intended to compress midi files. Sure, if you convert the .mid to .wav first then the .mp3 will be smaller than the .wav, but the .mid file is surely smallest of all. Since AGS will happily play midi files your game would infact be a smaller download using midi than mp3, no?

Just to add that after I re-read my posts I thought I would mention that I am not trying to be awkward or anything, I'm just curious thats all :) I also noticed I use the word "surely" way too much!

Yes, is obvious that midi file are smallar than mp3...
But I had some music in midi and others in mp3..  and i converted all in mp3... ;)

Fair enough, it's your game and your choice of course ;D

I look forward to the English translation.

Rui 'Trovatore' Pires

I almost wish you wouldn't translate it. Nevertheless, if you do, make sure to get it proofread by a native speaker - the original text is just too good! Best to have good writing in a lesser known language than to have sub-par writing in a translation.

I am stuck on the first room right now, mostly because I'm sleepy and really should be getting to bed, but it was enough for me to love the game. Actually, talking to the Guybrush portrait was enough to make me love the game!

No, actually, it might have been reading "Non è muorto ciò che dorme".

...heck, it was all of it! I've only seen the first room and already I love the game! :D

Portuguese, taking Italian classes as part of my singing course. It's enough for me to understand it, and Italian's certainly easier than trying to decipher the Maniac Mansion Mania series (german). ;)

And looking at your English... yeah, do get a good translator. Just make sure he does a good job, worthy of your original text.

Bel gioco complimenti. Se non hai ancora trovato un traduttore mi offro volentieri io. Sono italiano, ma il mio inglese e' ottimo, e ho anche all'attivo una traduzione amatoriale (dall'Inglese all Italiano pero'! :), Jedi Outcast).

Great work, Tequila, I'm pretty happy for you. Whenever you want, send me the txt file to translate, and I'll work on it. Keep in mind that, at the moment, I've got a lot of duties, but since I consider you a friend, I'll do the job as soon as I can.

If you've got particular recommendations on some words, or the way you want some not-translatable phrases to be interpreted (some jokes, if there's any), just let me know. And tell me if you want a perfect or free translation, too.

Grande Abisso!
Come hai potuto vedere anche Vince mi ha chiesto di poter tradurre..
Se tu sei troppo impegnato e non ce la fai a farla, posso anche passarla a lui oppure posso dividere il carico della traduzione tra voi due..
Fammi sapere te, visto che già  da tempo avevi chiesto di tradurre il gioco e spetta a te prendere la decisione.

Sorry if i don't translate the message...

Abisso

Mi farebbe molto piacere fare la traduzione del tuo gioco e cerchero' di essere veloce. Mi spiace pero' per Vince. Ad ogni modo una traduzione combinata non e' una buona idea.
Decidi tu dato che e' il tuo gioco.

It'd be a pleasure to translate your game, and I'll try to be quick. But I'm sorry for Vince.
Anyway, a combined translation is not a good idea.
The decision is up to you, since the game is yours.
Welcome back to the age of the great guilds.

Nessun problema Abisso, Tequila!

Sono d'accordo sul fatto che una traduzione combinata non e' la migliore idea.

Buon lavoro :)

Hi, I've completed the Italian->English translation for the Curse of Life, by Tequila 144. Since I'm Italian, and my English is not the state-of-the-art, the author wants to be sure that the translation is good enough.
So, if anyone would be so kind to test it and write down the changes to be made, he'd have my gratitude.

Just write here if you're interested, and Tequila144 will provide you with all the necessary files to play the game in English.

Thanks for your attention.

I'd be willing to test it out. Could you answer the following questions?

1. How long is the dialogue?
2. Are you looking for perfect grammar, or what would generally be understood by the majority of English speakers?
3. Will I just be reading the text files - or - will I have a way to skip through scenes of the game to establish context?
4. What date does the review need to be completed by?

email: zenassem@hotmail.com

Thanks,
~Zenassem

So far I have edited up to page 31.

All of my changes begin with *** I didn't remove the original english translation for fututre reference
My comments are in ()'s like (or), (Not sure what you meant)
If I couldn't understand what a line was trying to say it wil begin with ???

I will finish the rest tomorrow

Cinfa

Tequila, remember to delete the old english lines before compiling the translation, or the whole thing won't work.
In AGS translation files you MUST have:

original line
translated line
original line
translated line
original line
translated line

...

BTW: "long enough" isn't the right translation for "abbastanza lungo", it should be something like "quite long".  ;)

Thanks Cinfa,

When I complete the last page tonight, I will remove the original translation lines and my comments. I wanted to leave them in for now, so I could go back over them after it's complete. This way if something doesn't make sense, I would still have the original translation.

BTW: It's taking a bit longer because of translations that make sense, but sometimes not quite what is meant. Just like 'long enough' and 'quite long'. Last night I almost edited "eruction" to "erection"; rather than "eruption". Good thing I caught myself. lol. Also trying to avoid any "All your base belong to us!"

Finally there are some vague, edits. Should I lean more towards U.K. words or U.S., ie Flat vs. Apartment. Colour vs. Color. Metric system vs. Feet & inches. etc...

Abisso

So I completely suck as a translator... well, I'll train harder.

I suppose English would be the best choice, anyway. (speaking of the U.S./English translation differences).
Welcome back to the age of the great guilds.

paolo

OK, I've downloaded the Italian version and I'm about to play it... for future reference (although it looks like you've had dozens of offers already) I am available for translating from Italian into English. I am English and have excellent Italian. The best translations are usually those where the translator has the target language as their mother tongue, unless the translator is completely bilingual, so for a translation from Italian to English, it is better to choose an English person who knows Italian well than an Italian who knows English well. That does not mean that Abisso won't do a good job (non ti offendere, Abisso, ti prego!) - I'm sure that he will.

Oh, and if you need any help with translating particular phrases or jokes idiomatically, Abisso, please do feel free to contact me.

Abisso, you did a excellent job. It's just sublte changes that are being made, which just winds up taking some time, becuase it doesn't jump out as being incorrect so easily. I also need to keep the context in mind, as the dialogue is not in reading order; rather intermixed with all possible outcomes.

Most of the edits are tense agreements or phrases that don't translate exactly to english. But your translation was nearly 98% on the mark, from what I can tell. For the most part early reorganized the order of the parts of speech.

For example, I guess in Italian it's an insult to talk to one's shoulders. Where in English or the U.S. it's known as talking to one's back, or talking to the back of one's head.

Abisso

I absolutely agree with you Paolo. The best translations are made from a translator who has the target language as his mother tongue. I always find easier to translate in Italian, and I can do it faster.

Anyway thanks to you, zenassem, I was just hoping to get reassured when I blamed myself. I'm such a child, sometimes...  ;D

In Italian "parlare alle spalle" o "parlare dietro" are equivalent sentences, but the one you're referring to was supposed to mean: "parlare ad una persona girata di spalle". In the game there's an NPC that talks to the PC giving him his back. It's not intended as "when a person tells a bad thing to another, speaking of a third person that's not with them at the moment". I don't know if "talking to one's back" is the right translation.

Anyway, I'll look for you two when I'm going to release a new game (it's been ages since I last did).

Thanks guys.

Ho trovato un bug ma non e' molto grave:

Spoiler

Nella biblioteca, quando hai la scheda-cliente, se prendi il libro "Scoprire codice" e lo dai al bibliotecario, ti chiede la scheda-cliente, ti da' il libro e poi dice, "Spiacente, nessuna schieda, nessun libro." Non importa molto perche' ricevi il libro comunque. Non succede per nessun'altro libro.

In the library, when you have the library card, if you take the book "Discover codes" and give it to the librarian, he asks for the library card, gives you then book and then says, "Sorry, no card, no book." Playing the English version now. Translation isn't perfect but is readable and the game is still enjoyable with several humourous moments.

My only qualm is with the interface but then again I've never been a fan of the LEC GUI so much unnecessary mouse movements back and forth for each action but at least you got rid of some pointless verbs. Would be nice perhaps if rightclick were to default to look at or some context-sensitive action.

But nonetheless good game, I'm enjoying it so far.
When I was a little kid we had a sand box. It was a quicksand box. I was an only child... eventually.

Ieremiou

Finished the game and it was not too bad.
Needs a bit more work in the English language version (there is a lot of mistakes, from missing letters and odd grammar usage) but otherwise pretty fun.
There are a few pixel hunt bits but other than that the story is pretty straight forward.
If any one needs a hint I can help.
