ags games won't load on my system

I have a system running windows xp.  i tried before and after upgrading SP3.  AGS games do not run.  In taskman the exe shows that it's running, but no game comes up.  Any thoughts?

an update to my problem.  i think i've narrowed it down to RPC (remote procedure call).  I seem to have something going on that won't let ags games and msconfig.exe show.  They load (i can see them in task manager), but do not come up on the screen.  if i shut down RPC (which you are not supposed to do) it will let me play.  But, RPC is pretty mission critical and the system will actually reboot if you shut it down.  anybody know how to repair it?
