It's not real, you know right? It's just movie effects. Also there is a gore warning for the squeamish.

I'm wondering why you would look if that kind of thing offends you.

Or are you making some kind of joke?

Jack

It's not the gore, it's that this is probably some demoralising bullshit like Hostel.

Aren't things fucked up enough already?

LimpingFish

Calm down, peeps.

If we're only going to post uplifting, life-affirming movies we may as well do away with this thread altogether. Plus, I don't think it's Hostel, or one of it's sequels. Seems a little too...outdoors-y.

It could be an Eli Roth (or perhaps a Rob Zombie) flick, though.

Hmm...

Movies are make-believe.

milkanannan

Looks a little too polished, but Cannibal Holocaust?

Naw, nothing quite so exploitative. Actually a pretty mainstream movie.

If you look at the picture you will see that they have put a tourniquet on the guy's leg. They are trying to save his life by cutting his leg off, but they don't have the proper instruments or training to do so cleanly. It's not torture porn.

(that's a hint for everyone else too)

All right!

I never saw the movie, but I read the book, and your description rang a faint bell. I can't believe the book came out back in 2006 and the film in 2008â€"if you'd asked me I would have guessed I read it around 2012 and the film was maybe 2016.

Ah, The Ruins. I remember it now, the old dude shooting the young dude, the leg bit, etc. Quite a good movie. Never read the book myself, but I would've guessed the movie to also be more recent than 2008 (at least sometime in the '10s).

Well played. :)

It is a little-known and very effective shocker. The performances really sell what is happening to the characters as being real and even made me wince quite a few times. The movie stays true to the characters and you never get that "There's NO WAY that person would do THAT!" feeling you get in most horror movies. Even when they do something obviously incredibly dangerous, there is an actual risk/reward consideration they make before doing so (the cell-phone plot point in particular).  I'm guessing this comes from it being based on a book by a writer who actually took the time to think through every point, and not a hack horror-movie writer who tries to churn out as many rushed scripts as possible in the hope that at least one will be picked up.

Snarky

I thought the book was OK, but didn't hear many good things about the movie. I know they changed the ending, and weren't all the vines done in CGI or something? Interesting to hear that it may be underrated.

This, I expect, is a total gimme:

Yeah the ending was changed to a bit of a lame, or rather, typical one, including sequel baiting. But the vines were all pretty much practical effects except for a few scenes where that was impossible.

Looks like Lumbergh in the back (laugh)
