Made for November's MAGS contest, this is to my best knowledge the first Rhythm Game written in AGS. Oceanspirit Dennis has to defeat the evil blobz using the power of music! Notes flow down your screen on the rhythm of the song, and you have to match the pattern using the cursor keys. Do well, and fans will appear to cheer for you. And you thought there was no point to the GetMidiPosition() function, didn't you?
Featuring three stages, three piratey songs to whistle along to, and twelve different fan characters from various OSD media! Stepmania mats not currently supported, so use the keyboard and your sense of rhythm.

Download here.

New sprites by S3, and this game uses several art resources from earlier open source OSD games, as well as from the recent OSD sprite contest. Music taken from the free sites on the interwebz.

Well, the time for voting draws near and I still haven't beaten this game. Well played, sir! My old hands aren't up to the task, I suppose. (But mostly it's because I keep getting green and blue mixed up. Damn, those little tiles ought to have arrows on them.  :P )

Still, the game is very fun and I never get tired of watching Dennis (or is it secretly Kurt?) boogie.

This is a very nice game.  :)

This is really a very original concept, and Dennis pulls it off, too. Good fun.
I am curious to see how this'll get polished!

That's cool, but... How does one play? It's not written in the readme, nor in the game.

I've understood I play with UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, but I tried pressing "up" for each of the 4 colours when it was flying over Dennis' head, and it never made me progress, so... I don't know. Explain?

The four colors are (top to bottom) Up, Left, Right, Down. A quick way to remember: bLue = Left, gReen = Right.

Press the corresponding key as the symbol passes the vertical line.

OK. I love the concept (one can never be disappointed by an OSD anyway) but it's still very awkward. But eh it's a MAGS so I can't complain.

Other than adding a readme or an in-game help page, what do you think would make it less awkward?

A text file would have helped me. Just explaining about which color is which arrow key.

Beyond that, there isn't much you can do to help me with my terrible rhythm.  ;)

I found the controls responsive enough, no troubles there.

A tutorial level could be added. Nobody ever reads the readme and an in-game help is fifty-fifty...
Since you're planning to polish this up anyways, maybe include a "Stage 0"where Dennis really must do nothing but get the four "notes" right- they fly in with wide gaps,
and once the player has hit them all, that's it.

Maybe it's because AGS really shouts "adventure game". I was prepared to CLICK the symbols.  ::)

Nobody ever reads the readme

Well, I declare myself as a nobody then  :P

My prob was, that the readme is about Warthogs and several translations  ;),
but since it has been told in the thread to use the keybord, I pressed every button until I found some reactions.  ::)

There is another un-released rhythm game I know of, but the name of this one cracked me up!

I can't get this working. With other AGS games I have to set the graphics to Direct3D 9, but there's no graphics option in this winsetup...
Any ideas?

OK. I love the concept (one can never be disappointed by an OSD anyway) but it's still very awkward.
Other than adding a readme or an in-game help page, what do you think would make it less awkward?

- In level one, you could display an icon showing the key to be pressed when it's time to press it.
- Also the line is just a line, and the symbols are rectangles. So when should the key be pressed? When the left side of the rectangle hits the line? Or when the rectangle is above the line? Or when the rectangle is between the line and the left side of the screen?
- Finally you could make it more obvious when the hit is successful or failed (a red or green overlay over Dennis?)

That's just nitpicking. I laughed playing this :-D

EDIT: Actually I've tested it seriously: I focused only on the "top" key and made sure I was pressing it exactly at the right time (when the line goes exactly through the middle of the symbol)  - quite often it didn't give me any percentage. But sometimes it did. It Seemed a bit random. Could there be a sync. problem between the keyboard and the display? The player only has to hit the key, right? Holding it has no effect?

EDIT: I've noticed it works much better when I hold the key slightly longer than simply a hit!!!

EDIT: When I replay the same level twice in a row, the symbols I successfully hit during the previous game are grayed out (I guess that's a feature, that means you don't need to do them again?). However NONE of the ones I "failed" could be hit the second time, even though they were not grayed out. In other words, if I replay a game, I fail exactly at the same symbols as the game before. That might show that some of the symbols are faulty?

Uploaded v1.1, which adds instructions and sound effects, and fixes the bug with notes "hanging" if you repeat a song.

It feels like it has major lag on my system :-\

Mind it seems for example level 2 runs better than level 1 and 3...
Cool concept though :D. When is it being released on PS3? ;).
