The story of Joijo is the working name of this game.

Its a classic point-and-click saga that I started over a year ago.
I wanted to test the program and making graphics and backgrounds.
The game has a simple interface, one-click for all options.

There will be three short parts, the first part is complete.

The story is set in Southeast Europe in middle of 1980. Our "hero" Joijo is a simple and poor thief.
He has decided to quit stealing and become a decent man, but first he'll do one last job.
The plan is to steal a priceless diamond from the thieves leader and sell it.
A job that does not quite go as planned.

Nice graphics!
Looks very interesting.
I think you're thinking well about splitting the game in chapters, it's not so time-consuming!

Good luck with this!
Working on a RON game!!!!!

NickyNyce

Absolutely beautiful. Looking great so far, keep up the good work and good luck with it.

Ali

This looks great, and I like the simple premise leading the protagonist into mystery. Can't wait!

A mystery that begins with two bad guys and a car crash... Reminds me of Mulholland drv.

Surdy

Hi lowfive,

Your game looks great. If you are interested by a free french translation after releasing, I am your man.

Secret Fawful

This looks absolutely lovely, and unique. I haven't seen an AGS adventure game that looked like this since Jimmy Jam.

Martyn

Thanks! we will see where it goes with this. Now, I take some time off and wish you all a Merry Christmas.

Cyrus

I'm interested to know whether it will be a purely detective story, or with some surrealistic/mystical elements.

Martyn

I can say so much that it will not be a pure detective story. The inspiration comes from the movie Brazil 1985 and The Trial "Kafka"

It will be a journey through three parts. Awakening, enlightenment and the great truth.

what more can I say, it will be dark and with a screwed sense of humor.

Dear Lord! You'd better put that inside spoiler tags before Dual hijacks this thread!!! :o

Love what I see, especially the toned down use of colours, very nice mood. Great stuff lowfive!

For more inspiration, you can check out Jasper Fforde's "Shades of Grey". There are similarities to those ones  ;D

Martyn

Okay!

I can report that i have almost completed the first part. Three "rooms" with a few minor problems and a beginning to a story. Have no idea what I'm doing so it becomes as it gets. Only have a few things left to do, will probably be ready in a week or two.

Story: 100%
Dialogs: 100% (not much dialogue in the first part)
Graphics: 100%
Music and Sound 90%
Coding: 90%

It takes more time to do everything self than I thought. But of course I will make a clear demo so you can try.
Thought I had a good ending to this part so I'm a bit excited to continue the next also.

Cyrus

Yoo-hoo! So we'll see the first part after one-two weeks?

Had some problems with code and scripts. I have added a stage and made some changes. Now its just to correct my text lines, and someone who checks through.

Sorry!

Surdy

Looks intriguing.  :D

If you are interested by a free french translation, I am OK. You can contact me.  ;)

Martyn

Okay!
The demo is finished, except for my bad english, and a few small bugs. would anyone want to play through it before I post it? Send an email to martin.arvidsson@hotmail.com. ;D

News update!

The beginning of summer has been rainy here, so I've spent a little time on my game.

I was never really happy with the results of vector graphics as a basis. Works well as a backdrop but the characters and the gui became blurred and impersonal. I decided to do a redesign the game and I have pixilated it all as characters and objects. Backdrop is still the same high resolution. This with a very satisfactory result. Easier to make, and everything I have done as vector, are easy transfer over into pixels.

Examples of new graphics. Instead of having two characters that goes as I had before. I did a car, clever!

Has worked on a better star on the story, which will soon be finished.

Much work Left! Now I'm working on remake animations for the main character.

Ghost

I fully agree; the vector graphics were already very good but you just can't beat good, old-fashioned pixel-art. Looking forward to this gem even more now!

News update!

* I have completed the intro.
* 98% of the demo game that I did this spring is now redesigned.
* A friend will make music for the game. I not sure but think it gets a little retro feeling.
* Have viewed at different modules and used some of them.
* When you take a new object the menu scrolls up and the new object shown there.
Here is a quick test on Vimeo (low resolution): Testing menu and items.

Description module.

The big problem now is to fix someone who can work with the script. my weakness is my English.
As soon as the demo is redesigned and ready, can I promote the the game and get someone to help me with the story.

Adder

This is looking really intriguing - I'm looking forward to playing it! Really great images.

Martyn

Adder: Thanks a lot!

Yes, and here are three Backgrounds, new and never shown before!
They are from the intro sequence.

Location is in Southeast Europe in 1988. Do not know which country but I was in Croatia last year with my old VW bus, so inspiration comes from there.
I came up with the name Slavok City. Do not know if there's any such a place.
The act is set outside this city in the nearby village, where Joijo lives.

Game looks cool so far. Keep it up.
Woohoo, Croatia! Hey, if they can film Game of thrones here, why not an adventure game setting.

And now for the rest of my post, this isn't any critique or anything, just a small comment:
One thing though: I really have nothing against the name, but in Croatia and in neighbouring countries, I really can't think of a name of a city that's actually called "X City", there are a few "Xcity", like "Novigrad" or "Biograd" (as you can see "grad" means city, so that can help you if you're looking on Google maps or something) or there's Beograd in Serbia. And even when "grad" is used, it's not actually translated when named, so maybe something like "Slavokgrad" would actually be used and appropriate.
Again, I'm just saying this for information purposes only, I really don't mind you calling it "Slavok city".

If you need some slang words or some specific custom or terminology or location info, feel free to PM me.
I don't want the world, I just want your half

NickyNyce

Looks great, love the style you got going on here. Looks very promising, keep up the good work.

Martyn

Good point there Anian! Slavokgrad sounds much better, thanks!
The idea is that the country and places should be a bit fictive. But still be like Croatia!
Nice! Expect to hear from me!

Thanks a lot NickyNyce. Will try, I like making graphics but the big problem for me to write. Has dyslexia and find it difficult to write in Swedish, so do dialogs and stuff in English is even harder.

More about the game: I heard the samples of the music, the sound will be simple and guitar based.
Right now it's about 15 playable rooms. The demo has 4 playable rooms.

Hey

Check first post for new screenshots and updated info.

It goes slowly in the right direction!
