Curse DEMAKE resurrected.

Hello dear friends. First, I am a Spanish guy that dominates not quite English and I am using a translator, so perhaps it's not easy to understand my English. I am sorry.

Well, after that, I start. As many of you know, a boy named 'Jackpumpkinghead' began has make a version "DEMAKE" of the Curse of Monkey Island. Here is your forum thread on this page:

http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/YaBB/index.php?topic=42299.0

I was one of many, it seemed an interesting idea, and I followed the progress of our friend. Personally, I was looking for someone that would like to draw my own Monkey Island FANGAME funds, because I have prepared a great script (as everyone says of his screenplay on a FANGAME of Monkey Island.) (Already are more than 100 people). So I came across your project. Although personally I don't like too much the script of the CURSE, it seems very, very charming to see this version, with the original graphics of the saga.

Thus bequeathed the day I discovered, like many of you, that our friend JACKPUMPKINGHEAD left the project. It gave me enough penalty, but then I found that put the project in the hands of who would want to continue with him.

Well, as I have not found anyone who wants me to do the funds of my own FANGAME, (while I have searched lot and for a long time), I decided then to follow with his project, to continue learning to program with AGS and also with the PIXELART. Of this a year ago, and I have well advanced. Had not told yet anything to anyone, but inside very little I have a DEMO to upload, and I want to be sharing this work with all of you.

So here I am. I will upload some screenshots and I say what you think.
It must be said that as I do not have anyone that makes me the room's, I transformed the originals, and I've adapted them to the type 2 Monkey graphics. Or is that I have not restricted to clone the rooms, but I have adapted them. In catches may not appreciate, but comparing them is it quite noticeable.

More fun and also more difficult and laborious has been to transform the characters, and I have to say that I think that the result of so much work was worth it.

Well, I will not write more than time. I just want to point out two issues: the first is that I still don't have music. I'm trying to get in touch with the musician who was working with JACKPUMKINGHEAD in the original project, but do not get it. If you read this and want to get in touch with me. If there is another musician who composed in MIDI, the same applies: I need a musician.

The second thing I want to say is more important to me: what I want is originally develop my own FANGAME. I have the script, I have more than 6 characters, I have the knowledge, the time and the desire, need only one thing: that someone draw me the Room's... not asking for much: with drawings in black and white (with shadows better, but do not need) could start. Another friend can paint them with Potoshop. I would like to say that if I've done on this project, it is only with the intention of using this DEMAKE CURSE as curriculum, to find someone that wants to make my bankroll and start with my own FANGAME. So there is the message.

Nothing more. I hope you enjoy it! Edgar

AGH!!!! And above all one last thing. Many thanks to Jacpumpkinghead for his work. Thank you.

Here are the screenshots.

And here a comparison between the room's original and the result of my version:

One thing: the my project's room catches are landscape... not is very well why, perhaps because I did catch with my laptop, which has the panoramic screen. The fact is that the game itself is not seen, but in a natural way. Anyway...

Ghost

This. Is great news! Good to see the project resurrected; and heck, so many screenshots!
I HATED the COMI graphics even when they were supposed to be top-notch. Yes I did. Seeing them recreated in MI2 style does me a spell of good! Best of luck with completing this demake.

Just out of (semi-professional) interest: The way you demake the character sprites gets you some pretty good results; just *how* time-consumisg is it? Are you catching every frame, or do you just get some basic poses and animate these by hand? Character animation in CoMI was good and quite distinct.

Right now im not at home, just got my mobile to reply, but i just couldnt wait to say: i absolutely fell in love with this idea.ways been a great fan of letterbox graphics and this is like a dream come true :-)

Edgar_España

Well, thank you for your criticism, Ghost!

Respect for the big question: if I've done captures each frame of the animation of the Characters, the answer is that there have been everything, but basically, the animations more elaborate and difficult, Yes. It is also true that a single screenshot I've taken different versions. Finally, there was time for everything in this year of programming, but I think that the finish is very, very decent. To see if I already upload a DEMO and you can see directly.

And Yes, I have spent much time, but it is my childhood dream was to create an adventure game and thanks to this project 'inherited' I'm learning enough to make my own game. In fact before it had no idea of programming. I am self-taught and I've learned to see the tutorials in youtube. And the frames do with PAINT. In the end, is something that encana me.

I have to say that for my personal project I've created incredibly good characters animations from scratch, before making this Demake. After working with the frames of the characters of the CURSE, I got a technique in PIXELART which I will serve to make some more good own original animations of what I never thought that it would be able to.

Just get the cancel message. Wof! Thank you guys, give me desire to continue with this!!!!

CosmoQueen

WHooooooooooooooo I am so excited for this!! Please tell me there will be an English version?
KPop and AGS....................that is my life.

Edgar_España

Continue the good reviews! Many thanks to all!

In respect of whether we will have or not English version, well, will depend on whether any English-speaking it want to translate. For my part I am using a translator, or that I am not very good with English, and certainly not enough to translate it.

But if someone wants to translate the DEMO once ready, for I do not there is no problem. Just the opposite. And the same goes with the rest of languages.

And remember that I am looking for cartoonists to make the Room's of my own FANGAME!

Greetings to all and thank you!

fózi

LOL that is very funny! The graphics are very faithful to the original! Hell of a job, man!

selmiak

but if you are using a translator I might think you are translating from the english original, then why not keep these original lines?

other than that... looking GREAT! :D

Armageddon

Lovely, lovely. Hope this gets finished, the backgrounds are perfect. I do think Guybrush's color is a little bit off though, and the sizing of him. Elaine could lose the leather vest too. Looks great though. :D

Dualnames

Worked on Strangeland, Primordia, Hob's Barrow, The Cat Lady, Mage's Initiation, Until I Have You, Downfall, Hunie Pop, and every game in the Wadjet Eye Games catalogue (porting)

Well, that is not so exactly. I'm not using a translator to translate the game, I am using to translate my comments in this forum. For the game, I am using the original on Spanish, so I will confine myself to transcribe everything.

Anyway sure appears someone who wants him to translate.

Anyway, thank you for your criticism!

If it is true that even I have not fixed the light and shade of Guybrush according to the room. Regard that is small, it is truth. In some room's not noticeable but elsewhere if you can see a small gap. It is bad to use the original screens... though I have transformed them, there are imperfections, but hey...

Respect of Elaine, you're right. Perhaps should be already remove that vest, to give a little more than originality to the character.

The truth is that I still have quite a few details to improve. Why I want to review the game a bit before you upload a DEMO. I would also like to finish with a couple of puzzles that I am busy, and soon upload the Demo.

Thanks for the criticism to all! Give me encouragement to continue, although remember that what I really want is to create my own FANGAME, and so I need someone that draw me funds from my story!

A strong greetings to all!

Wait, what? Did you or did you not?

Also, while the graphics are looking great, I'm seriously put off by the all of them being squashed... ???
Judging from the screenshots you've put a lot of work into this already, but why didn't you keep the aspect ratio!?

Nice one, I like the squashed look, kinda recreates the cuteness of the first games.
Good luck with this one!  (and if you want I can help you make a cool cover in 3d with a 2d paintover :)
I did some Monkey art a few years ago;

UPS! It was a mistake of the translator! Of course that the comments makes me want to continue with this! I am very grateful and see positive critique of people pushes me forward more and more. I'm doing this with love and enthusiasm, and somehow I am doing a d ela childhood dream, but my real goal is to create my own fangame, whose story I have prepared.

On the gap sizes. Well, it's a matter somewhat complicated for me. The truth is that playing the DEMO, then not so noticeable, but it is true that it could be improved, although I can't think of how. I have no knowledge with Photoshop, and already have transformed the Room what I learned to do. But if you think that it is a notable flaw, perhaps I can ask for help from a friend to resize some areas and mix with others. For example if it did with the Chair of the Rotthingham captain. It was a lot of work but worth because ates was very, very rude.

Anyway, wait to play the DEMO, and if the difference in sizes is very clear, I will try to fix it later.

In any case, thank you for your criticism, friends!

Wow, Wow, Wow! How cool!

Do Hey, and you do not would be interested in preparing a few funds for my original story? I am doing this Curse DEMAKE M.I. as curriculum to find someone that draw me funds from the Room's of my own history. With a job as yours, and then pixelandolo and trying to give a RETRO touch, could do wonderful things together... do not want to try? I have to say that the day that starts with the history of my FANGAME surely we will create a very interesting adventure, and have someone like you in the team would be awesome!

Would you not like?

Edgar_España - If you want to talk about other projects (collaborating on other projects) please take this into PMs (with Karens or whoever) and leave this thread about this game.  Also, I have combined another double-post, please stop double-posting.

Now... let's keep this thread on the rails people.  Remember, this is not the critics lounge...

Karens

As for funds, nah, it's one of my all time favorite games, so I'd rather do it for free :),, (Im not very good with traditional 2d painting (haven't got the patience, heheh), but with a 2d paintover I can make a 3d pic look like a 2d pic, (and if you ever need a couple of posters or a cover art/PR thing, let me know! :)

edit by darth - as I mentioned above this is not the critics lounge.  I have removed the non-game/critics lounge stuff from your post and PMed it to you (in case you want to PM it to edgar_españa).

Sorry Darth! Ill send him a PM instead, thanks,

Stupot

Yikes, this looks fantastic.  I personally never had a problem with Curse's graphics, but it's great to see them recreated in the older style.  Lovely work Mr. Spain :-)

cpage

Hey folks,
Im glad to see someone picked this back up. I would however ask about the change in direction... The previous version was taking it back to the style it would have been made at the time, and this yours seems to be the backgrounds and characters simply resized with some pixel fixes. The aspect ratio is different causing the squashed look of it all.

The main point of the original was a re-imagining... what would CMI look like in the style of MI2. This current incarnation is simply what would cmi look like with a quarter of the pixels. It is definitely a great way to learn AGS, however if you think this is a lot of work, imagine what it is like when the art isn't already made and the primary logic of the game laid out for you to copy.

I apologize if it seems I am being rude as it is not my intention. I just wonder what this current approach really achieves?

Karens

that reminds me of an interview of Al Lowe (Sierra On Line developer) by a German magazine,,
the interviewer desperately wanted to know how much fun it all was,, and how amazingly lucky he was to create computer games,
"Yah yah, tell us about your fantastic work day Al!..."  Al looked at him and thought for a second; "Well, imagine sitting down in front of the pc and not getting up before 2 years later, that's basically how it is to create a computer game!",,
after that there was a moment of silence... :-)

it is an insane amount of work, but I think having all the backgrounds ready and basically done for a huge game like this is a great opportunity. If you really want this to succeed you probably have to be equally insane and manically obsessive ;-), but it is possible! so don't let anyone tell you it's not :P

cpage

Oh im not saying its not possible. I have every confidence that Edgar can accomplish his goal here.
