I think it's okay to bring this thread back to life as I have a riddle I just thought up, and so, instead of making a new thread:

Singular: Cactus. Plural: Cacti.
Singular: Hippopotamus. Plural: Hippopotami.
Singular: Octopus. Plural: Octopi.

What is the case where this rule is reversed?

Hmm... interesting one.  I thought I might be onto something with calculi / calculus or foci / focus- sadly not - but I shall continue to cogitate...
