HandsFree

The 'offer your services' thread consists almost exclusively of musicians. I don't think any AGS game needs to be silent... :)

Andail

People need to stop being so hurt about this and accept that there have to be restrictions, or this can't be a competition.

How are we gonna have an OROW if you're allowed to use precisely everything you point at on the whole wide interwebs? This whole activity will be reduced to a release date for whatever small-scale game project you might have lying around. A game jam is about everyone working on the same conditions, with the same time limit, and the same premises.

Can't draw? Use stickmen. Can't make music? Yes you can, just hum into the freaking microphone. I bet the one who makes a stick-men adventure game with self-recorded hummings is bound to win something.

Sing something for us! Or take a look at this game for music and sound effects http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/1166/ (it was even nominated for best sound and music!)

I see what was done there. :) If only I had guitar or violin! BTW, thanks for introducing me to a nice game, downloading it.

Thanks for the tip, HandsFree. It looks like I will have to start hunting for the musician? But here is one already! Would you help me? :cheesy:

EDIT:
Looks like Andail got angry. Sorry man, if I offended you.

The way I see it OROW should be games created in one week.. IE Graphics, Sounds, Scripts, GUI's ... basically everything ..
otherwise it should be called something else.
Is there a ruling that states thou shalt work alone ??

Why people feel that they should be allowed to run around splicing graphics etc from other games they started is beyond me as those graphics could have been created months ago over the course of weeks and weeks..

Am I rambling here??  Andail is right    I'm so scatty

Automation is one hell of an example of great skill. A previous winner (2006) All made in a week and a game this competition should praise as its best example!!

I had originally thought of going the way I go with my MAGS games, and using freesoundproject for sound effects.
However, now that I think of it and read the thread, I can see this is not acceptable. Thinking a bit further, I can find a freeware synth keyboard on the internet and make a short looping tune in audacity and I have a microphone for sound effects, so hells, this might turn out to actually be a lot of fun after all, despite the restrictions!

I maintain my disagreement that music is somehow less important than graphics.

I never said that. I never said anywhere that music is less IMPORTANT than graphics. This has never been said by me.
I have said that fewer people are able to create their own, original music than there are people who are able to create their own, personal graphics.
This has indeed been said by me.
I didn't mean to insinuate that you said that, it was just the impression I was getting.  It's just that, for me, graphics are far more challenging than music, probably as challenging as music is to many of you who can make graphics.  Since we are making graphic adventures rather than text, graphics are indeed a requirement, but they could just be simple shapes.  The story and coding is what should be important.

Ok, since there is going to be a sound/music category as every year, I'll stick with the current rules. So only original material except for published modules and templates.
Fair enough.  I'd say that makes for a good compromise.

Ghost

dactylopus, agreed, absolutely. And maybe I did lose my calm there a bit, sorry for that.

Cat, kudos for the final say- though I fear I'll have to go totally vaudeville style now  (laugh)

Armageddon

Gosh darn, I had the whole soundtrack for my game laid out. :(

Back on topic, I'm tentatively planning to enter this - and we all know how unreliable I am! - so I'm preparing as much of the idea in my head as I can this week.

Good luck to all involved.

Hmmm.. I guess the rules then eliminate me. Honestly I can't draw for my life. I even just tried stick figures, seriously. My attempt was to make a decent playable game. One room is doable because, well, its just one room. My art method would be to construct 3D scenes using 3D objects that I either downloaded or bought and creating the scene by rendering what I create into 2D. But this eliminates me because of the pre-made content. So, I guess I am out. Maybe I will still make what I wanted to make and release it in the spirit of OROW but not for OROW.

Joseph, you can still join. Graphics are only one aspect. You can make simple, crappy MS Paint backgrounds, but when you have great story and puzzles, you can still win in other categories. Or you take your camera and make a photo background, there are many options...

I once made a game for MAGS in 4 days (one of two AGS games I ever made actually). And it contained 3 rooms :D.

I want to clarify, is the OROW theme-based competition, or one is free to choose the topic/concept?
How will the jury make sure that nothing premade was used?

E: I seriously need to take a rest from C++ coding, so I might join only because of that :).

No, there will be no theme.

Good point. I don't know how this could be done. I think we have to trust that noone is cheating.

Atelier

This looks really fun, I'm definitely taking part!

Pretty please, can we have one? :)

Andail

Yeah, why not a theme, really? That would probably reduce the risk of people using premade material, or starting prematurely.
But it's up to Cat, of course.

Atelier

I think a theme would really help too. I have a couple of ideas but no real direction. The problem is, people may already have begun planning their games. If it was me, I'd be annoyed if I had to scrap what I already had.

What about a 'Fortnightly AGS'? :D

cat

Interesting idea, this would indeed reduce cheating.
