Topic: 'Fictional Spirituality'

This month's guidelines were set by Atavismus and Peder:

The game has to include elements of the spiritual journey of the main character.
The definition of spirituality can be very personal and large.
It can be considered as the link/relationship between us/our spirit and something higher (nature/universe/creator).
It's also a matter of interior life and the link between all of us.
The game can be serious, parodical, satyrical, etc., whatever.

Some keywords: initiation, rituals, meditation, priest, book, temple.

Ending 2nd March (an extra two days to compensate for the short month)

What is MAGS?

MAGS is a monthly competition for amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, or provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favorite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.

You may get help for the competition, although you must end up doing something yourself. You should however be warned that it proves difficult to organize a big team within thirty days. You are not allowed to use material already created before this competition. Your game must be completely new! Music and sound is an exception; you can use free material that is available to the public, if you wish. Modules and templates are also allowed.

Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualise your game following the month's criteria (see top). Second, create your game fueled only by coffee. Finally, post your game in this thread, including:

âÅ"“ A working download link
âÅ"“ The title of your game
âÅ"“ A suitable in-game screenshot

At the end of the month, voting will begin, usually lasting for fifteen days. The winner chooses the next month's theme, and their name and game is immortalised in the MAGS Archive. For more information, please visit the Official MAGS website.

TGames

I am interested in joining this mags, but I am kind of confused for the theme. Can someone provide a sample story.

Volcan

I almost wish to make a sequel of Rex and Sissi using february mags but the rules prevent me to use the same sprites.

TGames

ok i read the rules more and i have an idea for a game. i would like someone to help me with the character sprites though

Billbis

I'm in. I just hope I will have time to complete something. :)

Dmitry Stefantsov

Well, I'm signing up. Let's see how the experience from the past MAGS will help to make something for the February.

jannar85

Okay, I'm in. Hope I get the chance to finish this time.

Working title:
The Call

The game will be about not giving up.

I started on other ideas before I went with this story, so if anyone wants to continue them let me know. Just want to throw out a few suggestions to spark some ideas:

The Pleiades
Where we originally originated from, at least some say so.
There's a lot of material on the internet.

First encounter
Aliens show themselves for the first time

Abducted
An alien abduction.

Out of body experience
What happens if your soul leave the body?

The afterlife
Just died, but the dead was only the beginning.

Spirit walk
An egosentric person will go on a walk of change.

Also read the Alchemist for more ideas :) Or the celestine prophecy.
Veteran, writer... with loads of unreleased games. Work in progress.

HanaIndiana

Thanks for sharing the ideas jannar. I think I'm entering too, but I'm having trouble with this theme. It's easy to go too big.  Currently I'm thinking of doing a story about a character's relationship with 'something higher'.

SSBFreak

I really want to try entering one of these things someday, but I want to make sure I know how to properly code a game. Hopefully if I can get good enough at it that I can work fast enough, I might be able to enter one of these MAGS before the year's done.

Billbis

Ok, first week is already gone.

I have my main idea for the scenario. It will be serious, religious-related (but not proselyte), full of existential questions. The main difficulty will be not to be ridiculous, which will be hard to achieve. I hope the music will help keeping a heavy and concerned atmosphere.
I have drawn a first room, and (very poorly) done the main character walk-cycle. I am just starting the integration within AGS.
For the graphic style, I am going HiRes (800*600), Low Palette (seven colors, what a symbol! := ).

Here's a first screen:

I hope your projects are going well!

ArgyBoi

Somniatis (changed)

I have the main aspects of the plot ready, and drawn some sprites. Long way to finish it, though.

@Billbis: very nice! I like the clean style of your graphics.

HanaIndiana

I like your graphic styles a lot, very nice.

My idea is.. well, a little weird. Just hoping it will be more funny than lame. It touches on religion and belief, and taking a
journey with an all-powerful God.

I'm going with Lo-Res this time, which has been much easier for me.
Here's a screenshot of Wesley and Charlie, talking over coffee.

Dmitry Stefantsov

Wow! These are great looking games! Excellent work, indeed.

Me and my friends (see credits for my January MAGS entry) haven't decided on the game plot yet. We only have agreed on setting and some key features of the scenario. All I can say for now is that the plot evolves around psychic issues and moral choices.

As for resolution, I'm experimenting with widescreen 640x400.

Yeah, we're intrigued by the idea too :) The hardest part is to filter the ideas being generated right now to make a coherent story. We're definitely going to deliver some thrilling experience ;)

Indeed, there are many cool looking games already!

Some great looking entries again! I like this theme but I'm actually still only halfway through making my *December* MAGS game... so unless I have an amazing idea that can be done quickly I don't think I'll be in this one.

I am working on something for this.

If I complete a game, it'll be my first one ever. I just starting using ags about a week ago. But despite that, it's coming along and I just might have something.

It's not going to be "good" by most measurements but maybe good for a brand-spanking noob like myself working alone. Anyway here is the screenshot of the first room. I have two other rooms completed and am currently working on my forth one.

@Emont: Haha! I meant 'none available'. Some explode music would be a nice addition I think, if you are offering. I'll PM you the scenarios and you can let me know what music might be possible. :)

HanaIndiana

No worries! Glad you like it. I find pixelated low-res death scenes to be quite hilarious. Plus laughing at death keeps the reaper away. Hey, there's a possible Mags idea for this month. Come on people, still a whole week left!

Billbis

I'm still on, making some progress, but there still a long way to go.

Billbis and JuaniT both of your games look like they are going to be good. One of you is probably going to win this. I'm entering mainly to get myself accustomed to ags, I don't think I have much chance at winning though.

By the way, can the people who enter vote? I'm not necessarily going to vote for myself, just so you know. I'm going to vote for the one that I honestly believe is better.

Yep, of course - apart from being impossible to tell anyway, if people can vote for themselves in elections they can for MAGS (laugh) The only issue I can see is where an entry has multiple authors, so an advantage assuming everybody votes for themselves. But I think that's all theoretical!

Hey, thanks for your kind words, but IMHO the visuals are not the most important aspect of a game (specially if we are talking about Adventure Games :-D), so don't rush your desition before playing all the entries.
On voting yourself: I don't understand why somebody would vote himself in a competition such as MAGS, I think the main goal of MAGS is encouraging people to design and finish a complete game in a month (this is specially usefull for people who have the bad habit of abandoning projects easily, like me , because you have "a reason" to finish it, and sharing your progress with the others participants make you feel that you are not alone in your effort). So "winning" MAGS for me is making the deadline, I don't see the reason to "vote yourself".

HanaIndiana

^ I agree. Finishing something is the best part I think. And I like the motivation and inspiration I get watching everyones progress.
It would feel weird voting for myself. I suppose I might if I couldn't stand any other game. :) But the odds of that happening are slim.

Atavismus

Quote from: JuaniT on Sat 22/02/2014 17:24:25I made some progress, but I'm not sure if I'm gonna make the deadline.

You made the biggest part and your game looks great: you have to submit your entry!!! :)
There is always a way to shorten stuffs without changing the substance ;)

About voting for yourself:
In politic, you can vote for yourself, so why not here?
Of course, if you prefer another entry than yours, don't vote for yourself, but otherwise, imo, no shame, no false modesty.

Good luck you all!

Janos Biro

#39
QuoteBut I think that's all theoretical!

QuoteIn politic, you can vote for yourself, so why not here?

Well, I don't think this is theoretical at all! It is quite pragmatical: voting for yourself in "politics" is a symbolic act with no statistical relevance. Candidates vote for themselves just to assure the confidence in their campaigns. But in council decisions, voting for yourself is prohibited, for obvious reasons. In the case of this community, allowing the candidates to vote for themselves has a significant result: it gives some advantage to the proud ones, who always think they are best, and some disadvantage to the humble ones. I don't think voting for yourself should be encouraged in this case. Disallowing candidates to vote for themselves is a common measure to minimize this.

Another problem in this kind of competition is that people tend to vote because they like the author, not necessarily the work. Influential people, or people with more friends, will get better results.
I'm willing to translate from English to Brazilian Portuguese.

Atelier

I mean the scenario where an entry wins, because it has more authors which all vote for it, is probably just theoretical. I wouldn't encourage/discourage voting for yourself (there is no problem with the system as-is). It's up to the individual to decide whether they're "in it to win it", or (in most cases) whether their purpose is finishing a game, as Hana and JuaniT pointed out. This is apart from it being impossible to enforce any rule. Also, simply discouraging voting for yourself could mean less honest people have an advantage over more conscionable entrants, who would have voted for themselves otherwise; whereas if everybody has the discretion to vote for yourself, there is no problem.

Janos Biro

I'm willing to translate from English to Brazilian Portuguese.

Seven

Even though I pretty much finished my game, I decided I'm not going to enter it after all. It is not up to my standards and I feel like I would have to apologize for it if I were to enter it. I don't want to be thought of as someone who makes crappy games. I'm going to try for a better game next month, one that I will not feel so ashamed of entering. Hopefully everyone else finishes theirs. I look forward to playing the games and voting for a winner.

Billbis

#43
Hey, Seven, I respect your decision, but it makes me sad. :~(
I think most of us feel the same about what we are making: obviously what we make is far from what we have idealize. My last month was full of discouraging moments when I realized that my wonderful scenario was crap, that I won't have time to make any talking animations, that the animations I have made are poor 2 frame walk-cycles, that my game probably won't be proofreading (and god know that it needs some!), that the supposed-to-be-very-profound dialogs I wrote are ridiculous two sentences long, etc.
IMHO, it is not the creator that have to judge its games, but the public. And to that, we have to release our games! Furthermore, nobody will judge you because your first game isn't as good as expected, it is the contrary: people in these forums respect the ones that make game in just one month, no matter how crappy and buggy they are. So I think you should release your entry anyway.

"Please, Seven, release your game!"

Myinah

Seven, that's a real shame. You can always update it after MAGs. Consider it as an alpha release. It would be a shame to have worked hard to the point of completion and then not release it. No one releases a perfect MAGs game. People know that you have only had a month, and probably not had the ability to work on it full time so no one is expecting perfection.

I really hope you release it, because the spirit of MAGs is to have fun and release a game. Billbis is right in saying only the public can judge, and it's all one big learning curve. Worst case scenario, it is a bit rubbish. In reality, what does it matter? You had fun and learned something. But odds are people will really enjoy it and you are depriving us all of a trip to fun city! ;)

Seriously, if you finished it, release it. People's comments will encourage you to make a better game the next time ;)

jannar85

Well.. I can't join this month either.. sorry.
Looking forward to the other entries :)
Veteran, writer... with loads of unreleased games. Work in progress.

Seven

I appreciate the encouragement but it fails on too many levels, particularly the story since I did not even bother to write a script for the game. I wasn't sure how much I'd be able to do with ags and I didn't want to write a script that went way over my head. At least now I have a better idea and so next time I can prepare a script and have a story ready before I start making the game.

Another reason is because of the graphics. Not only were the backgrounds made in five minutes or less but the characters I used are not completely original as required by the rules, I borrowed some of the character graphics from another software but I did not realize this was against the rules until much later when I read through the rules again.

But even though I won't be entering this month, I still consider what I did a success and not a waste of time. I know how to use ags way better than I did at the beginning of the month and I think I'll be ready to make a much better game for next months competition.

Nice entry JuaniT! The music was simple but effective as was the character animations. I loved the painted backgrounds. The puzzles were easy but fun. And the story was very interesting. This is going to be a very hard entry to beat.

ArgyBoi

@Seven Thank you for your kind words :)

I received some feedback on the walking speed so I just updated the link with a new version to fix that.

Janos Biro

Just played Symbiosis. Here is what I think (spoil alert):

Spoiler
It has so much to do with the modern spirituality! I've meet some people who would identify with it so much. For example, I have met a group of vegans who "evolved" to fruitarianism, and their motto was "Man's function on earth (or the meaning of life) is to spread seeds". They would love the fire making puzzle and the mushroom theory. What you have here fits exactly in the competition theme. The only thing that could be better is the sprite walk cycle, I think.

Personally I was not bothered by nor did I notice problems with the walking speed. I thought the walking animation could have used a little more work but the speed of the character seemed fine to me.

Billbis, that was a really good game. I enjoyed the multiple paths but it didn't really seem to make a difference whether you decided to take the sword or not unless there is an actual way to avoid killing the roman?

Between the two games though I have to say I liked Symbiosis slightly better. It drew me in more with it's atmosphere and story, and its puzzles were better.

3 great games already! This is going to be hard to decide. Again!

Seven

HanaIndiana, that was hilarious and fun. The voice recording wasn't very clean since I could hear a lot of background noise and sometimes the mic moving but it was still good. It reminds me how much voice acting can really increase a game's enjoyment. The little death animations were cool too. Both you and Billbis's games focused mostly on telling a interactive story without providing any challenges or puzzles to get in the way of the narrative. This could be good or bad depending on who you ask. David Cage from Quantic Studios (creator of heavy rain and beyond two souls) would probably consider it a good thing but for somebody who likes more traditional adventures with puzzles that make you think and can get you stuck Symbiosis will hold favor.

I don't know who is going to win. These are really good games. It should be a close call.

UPDATE: I forgot to mention that the game is implemented in two languages, English and Russian. Through the development phase all the dialogs were written in Russian, for it was convenient in our group to share updates that way, and the English translation was added at the later stages. So, to play "Mobile Angel" in English you should change the settings. Anyway, thanks for reading this, and enjoy playing "Mobile Angent" :)

I especially liked Lema Sabachthani, and how the story flowed. And the backgrounds and music in Symbiosis, and its atmosphere.

I am totally ok to count Mobile Angel as a valid entry despite its very small delay. (nod)
I play all the entries, congratulation to all of you for releasing something ! I've also rate your games on the Database. It will be nice if we cross-rate our games so that they can reach the 5 rated threshold. :)
Thanks JuaniT, Seven and HanaIndiana for your kind words. :-*

@JuaniT: Very nice background and music. They help a lot to the immersion. The end was a bit to trippy to my tastes, but the three first rooms were fantastic to play.
@HanaIndiana: Nice Voice acting, and very nice pixel art! Very funny little story. As absurd as I like.
@DmitrryStefantsov et al.: The story was very inventive, and I like following it. The very first traveling also render very good. I am definitely a fan of your animation method (laugh). Of course the game is less polished than the other entries, but its a charming default IMHO. Keep going !

@Billbis: already told you, but again: nice clean and sharp visuals, the storyline develops quickly. Not so sure if there's an alternative ending, because some puzzles seem to be completely optional. Like...
Spoiler
... giving the coin to the beggar, taking the sword, killing the Roman with the sword or the stone.
[close]
@HanaIndiana: liked the pixel art visuals and the humor. The voice acting was good (despite the audio quality). Not much to do puzzle wise.

@DmitrryStefantsov: nice visuals and some interesting scripting ideas. Although, similar to your previous MAGS attempt, maybe it was too ambitious for a one-month game. Maybe if you try to do something smaller next time you can make a game that gives the sense of "completeness".

As for my entry, the character animations are too "raw"; I'm really bad at animating and the time limitation was a big impediment too.
Also it's shorter than I originally planned, so the story had to fit the four backgrounds, and because of that it ended being a bit wordy.

Billbis

Voted! That was an hard choice, because I like all the entries. (laugh)

Janos Biro

I don't mean to offend, but I think Symbiosis is the only entry that is actually about spirituality. All the others are about something else. Some are very marginally touching religion, but not exactly spirituality, at least not as I think of it. Doesn't mean they are not great games. Lema Sabachthani is very well done, and it's about an event described in the gospels, presenting a twist from the common interpretation, but I feel it's more about history than spirituality. The 4th Wall puts the player in the role of a unpredictable god, but I felt no connection to the theme besides that, as this god is nothing but human. Finally, mobile angel could be about any kind of powerful being, or even a hacker. Again, I think the games are good, but Symbiosis is the only one that made me think about spirituality.
I'm willing to translate from English to Brazilian Portuguese.

Seven

It was a difficult choice but I ended up voting for Symbiosis. I just felt like it was the most complete game with its story and puzzles.

IMO, all those games are different and all are related to spirituality.
Spirituality is large. God, Religion are a part of spirituality.
Maybe Symbiosis is near of your own definition of spirituality (I can understand coz I share myself a point (no spoiler) with Symbiosis), but it doesn't mean other games are not "spiritual".
I see a spiritual journey in each of the four games.

I hope to see more games like this in the future ;)
Congratz and thx again guyz!

HanaIndiana

Yeah I agree, I think they all fit the theme.
QuoteIt can be considered as the link/relationship between us/our spirit and something higher (nature/universe/creator).

Each one is about a relationship or a link between a character and something higher.

I agree, but just to be obnoxious, if you get hit by a train, this too can be described as "a relationship between you and something higher", but that's not spirituality at all. I think modern man has forgotten what "spirituality" really means, so he starts buying into this shitty pseudo-spirituality we see today. We are in the age of pseudo-spirituality, and that's the whole problem to me. (It's not simply my personal view, it is theological) <-- *That's ridiculous, ok, I'm just being ridiculous...*

Played and voted! Well done to everyone, that was a tough choice :)

In addition to the actual gameplay, I liked how each game had such a unique idea driving it.

CitizenParagon

Voted. A fun bunch of games, each had such a distinctive take and mood, from serious to silly.

HanaIndiana: I loved the art and lightheartedness.
Billbis: Very cool story. I was wondering where things were going and the reveal at the end was fantastic and really added a dimension to the Mags theme.
Symbiosis: Excellent creation of a moody world.
Dmitry Stefantsov: I had a little trouble following the concept in places but that may have been a translation thing. Would love to see what you'd do with more time to polish.

Nice work everyone!

Congratulations Hana! :)

I was really impressed by the quality of these games, especially as I'm still working on my unfinished December MAGS game 3 months later ;)
