Examine?... Although now it's 8 letters, so examined or examines.

My thinking being 'ex' as in ex-employee (ie, someone who's been fired). Maybe 'ami' being a Latiny term for friend (mom ami, amigo, etc) could be justification for 'teammate'. And of course, 'examine' is verb used in some adventures instead of 'look'.
