After a false start, voting is OVER.  Thanks to all the entrants for a great first time as host. All the games were enjoyable. My personal vote went to Song Animals. What a gorgeous piece indeed.

The votes have been counted and the results are THUS:

The Man That Only I Can See by Chicky - 1 vote
Monster Wants In by Mandle - 1 votes
OCEANSPIRIT DENNIS: The Terror of the Ice Princess by MiteWiseAcreLives - 3 votes
Song Animals by Emont - 4 votes
Scylla And Charybdis: A Grecian Ship From Olympus U by Eggie - 4 votes
Freak Chic by Atavismus et. al. - 12*

Well done to the the Frenchies :-)
You'll be contacted soon about choosing a topic for January.

(*Freak Chic still had a bunch of votes, but enough of them (5) were from non-French IP addresses to conclude that it likely would still have won.)

After a month off, MAGS is back. Let's make it a good one.

Topic: There be Monsters!
This month's guidelines were set by Grok

On a Dark and Dreary Night
Monsters gives a Dreadful Fright
to achieve MAGS' Fame
make of that a Game
and include Lines that Rhyme
that's the Special Rule this Time

The game should be about monsters. You pick the monsters. You could go for horror or comedy or what ever else you might like. But the game must contain rhyming as a part with some sort of significance for the game.

Ending: November 30th

What is MAGS?

Started in 2001, MAGS is a competition for amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favorite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.

Rules

• You may work in a team to produce an entry.
• You are not allowed to use any material created before the competition. Your game must be completely new! An exception is music and sound; you can use any audio that is freely available to the public.
• Any modules and templates featured in this board are also allowed.

Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualise your game following the month's criteria (see top). Second, create your game fueled only by coffee. Finally, post your game in this thread, including:

âÅ"“ A working download link
âÅ"“ The title of your game
âÅ"“ A suitable in-game screenshot

At the end of the month, voting will begin, usually lasting for fifteen days. The winner chooses the next month's theme, and their name and game is immortalised in the MAGS Archive. For more information, please visit the Official MAGS website.

This theme sits really well with me,
I note the rules and smile with glee.
A game? A game? Of monsters and rhyme?
I'll provide just that, hope I make it in time!

cat

A battle of creating a game
To win AGS glory and fame?
A game with a ghost
I'd like to do most
So please write down my name!

WHAM

Oh me and oh my
I gues I'll just try
To make a game in four weeks
About monsters and freaks

There should also be a king,
Now ain't that the thing,
Riding across the land,
With a golden sword in hand,

I already ran out of rhyme,
Potatoes and thyme.

Chicky

If I say yes, will my ambitions regress?
If I turn blind eyes, will another arise?
I find myself suffocating in thought,
a little distraught,
so far from the goal I have often sought.
A monster you say?
I've one inside.
Still beating and still alive.
Still waiting for her moment to rise.

My vice is your anchor.
Just be sure to thank her.

Designing one's monster,
Can be quite a chore,
But I hope what I come up with,
Has not been seen before...

WHAM

In the days of old,
Banners fluttering bold,
Mankind stood tall,
Ruling over it all,
The trees and the land,
The seas and the sand,
‘Till one day they came,
Their hunger insane...

Une petite dizaine, ou une grosse poignée,
D'AGSiens parlant le français,
Montent tous ensemble un petit projet.
Mais vont ils donc arriver
A tenir les délais serrés ?
But of course, messieurs les Anglais !

Some of us speak English,
For the others, this tongue is rubbish.
They stay hidden in the French forum,
But this month, here they will come!

Creamy

Working on this collective project has been cool so far :)
QuoteSome of us speak English,
For the others, this tongue is rubbish.
I'd rather say :
"Some of us like English very much,
the others think it's double Dutch"

Stupot

English, French, or Navajo,
If you make a game, we'll give it a go.
There seems to be interest in this months theme,
Can't wait to see pictures of shots from your screen.

Myshkin

Wow it's been a while, but I'm going to go ahead and declare my attempt to get something done for this month. Oh and also I can't think of any rhymes for my post. Ah, I've failed already! (laugh)

JudasFm

Will you write a vampire rhyme?
Or speak to us of gooey slime?

I will not write a vampire rhyme
I know not how, I have not time
And be it greener than a lime
I will not speak of gooey slime

Then shall you tell another tale?
Of wolves that howl and ghosts that wail?

Nor will I tell a wolfy tale
Or spin a yarn of ghosts that wail

Perhaps a brand new monster, then?
To scare even the boldest men!

I tell you once and once again
I will not scare the boldest men
Nor will I tell a wolfy tale
Or spin a yarn of ghosts that wail
I will not write a vampire rhyme
I know not how, I have not time
And be it greener than a lime
I will not speak of gooey slime

A yeti's story will you try?
And don't forget a custard pie

I did a yeti once espy
And by its furry hand did die
As to why, I'll tell you why
I'd eaten up my custard pie

Then just what monster shall it be?
Inside the game, what will we see?
And will it give us all a fright?
With claws that scratch and jaws that bite?

I will not write of snapping jaws
I can not draw the scratching claws
I did a yeti once espy
And by its furry hand did die
As to why, I'll tell you why
I'd eaten up my custard pie
I tell you once and once again
I will not scare the boldest men
Nor will I tell a wolfy tale
Or spin a yarn of ghosts that wail
I will not write a vampire rhyme
I know not how, I have not time
And be it greener than a lime
I will not speak of gooey slime

(The bare bones of this poem lodged in my mind and wouldn't get out, so I had to write and post it :D I really want to enter this month but I have exams just around the corner, so can't guarantee anything :()

Sadly, this challenge I will not undertake
I already have one project to make
But I bring some creepy tunes
To listen to in the dark of new moon
May they bring shivers and mey they inspire
Creativity -- or dark desires!

Stupot

Oh, Grok. Oh, damn. Just look what you've done.
A poetry buffet, this thread has become.
Chicky, your drawings are strange and unique.
Thank you so much for giving us a peek.
And Mandle I'm glad you have started to draw.

WHAM's retro RPG,
Makes me want to bend a knee,
To bow before the sovereign's throne,
And partake whatever quest they wish,
Many-sided dice may be thrown...
Or perhaps his name is Lord British?

That looks pretty dreamy,
this lady's quite nice!
my dearest Creamy,
don't put that MAGS on ice!

Tonight some work was done,
Intrinsic to make the game,
Technical details I could not shun,
Yet my last screenshot remains the same.

Behind the scenes however,
Some puppetry I may now endeavor...

A cat, as you know, is a resourceful beast.
And ghosts are just odd, to say the least.
Together at work, forces firmly combined,
their game shall be fun, and subtly refined.

(Also it stars a cat-ghost)

Dualnames

omg i love ur avatar signature, like i can't find a way to tell you that, but i love that it references the runaways song and it gets stuck in my head each time i run into your posts, Ghost. And it's wonderful. And so is that cat.

Aww...a ghost kitty!
That's the cruelest thing.
Try to pet his belly

While for a horror game they're quite generic,
I wrangled in some atmospherics...
A thunderstorm to get the blood pumping,
While waiting for the monster to come thumping.

But do you have a raven? Feather jets black and ruffled?
Quothing 'Nevarmoar nev4rmoaaaars', leaving us profoundly baffled?

(Jambic broken? Do not fear. I am teh goast. I drink a beer.)

Mandle

Alas, I cannot yet crow,
About having a raven.
But you may find me ravin',
About having a crow.

Myshkin

Trying to draw just gives me a blister, so for this one I've enlisted the help of my sister...

Mandle

Last night stayed up to some ungodly hour,
(Now I've barely time to take a shower),
Working on the nitty-gritty,
And have advanced so itsy-bitsy...

Arrr! What that on the horizon be?!
Dares I say t'is the capital D!
What monsters on this adventure come?

Just got going... I just hope I can bring teh epikness in time.

Eggie

Don't fully know where this is going
Hopefully it keeps on growing
Much time from my day it robs
(Although it beats applying for jobs)

Ghost

Eggi, are those pug-boobs? That's genius!

The amazing talent in this here thread
once more confirms what's often been said:
Take a limit, and some rules, and enforce them by... force...
and you see what game makers are made of in their very centre of being with defines what they do when they are making games*

As for ourselves, I gotta say,
working with cat's great, so a big hooray!
I hope we can offer, tonight or the next,
a shot of a screen, or two? Imma bit perplexed...

Tonight I'm animating something that I hope,
Will make those who play gulp,
And hopefully exclaim:
"Thank God this is just a game!"

Mandle

Today some things went well but some went just alright,
The problems are fixable, but for now I'm calling it a night...

cat

A fierce brutal monster grabbed my partner in crime,
so can we still make it and finish in time?

But no need to worry, if the deadline is due,
we'll be still working hard to make it come true.

This game full of rhymes will for sure not annoy,
it instead will be something Dr. Seuss would enjoy.

Chicky, that looks so great!
But I'm worried about the little girl's fate...
I need to play!
RIGHT AWAY!
But I guess that must wait til another day... :~(

Stupot

I'm liking what I'm seeing, guys.
Can't wait to play these stories.
These screens and vids are a treat for the eyes.
And thankfully not too gory.

Ten days, or thereabouts, are left
to finish off your title.
The thirty-first, so near, so far,
So finishing soon is vital!

Somewhere in my code my judgement has lapsed,

I thought the exact same thing!
Much mood does the wobble bring!

Chicky

Thanks guys, what a pleasant surprise!

See my last MAGS entry 'Bitstream' if you want pseudo CRT gliches, bit crushing and screendoor effects ;)

Tonight both myself and my monster made a breakthrough:

I have a playable game but still not worth a walkthrough...

Looks fab Mandle, I especially like the handle!

I've been meaning to say...

I live near a lot of Military bases, they're certainly quite peculiar places.
Some of them have the strangest of sounds, one's that can be heard from miles around.
So the other day I recorded their siren, to muffle the sound where the monsters are hiding.

Mandle

My title page is almost a Picasso,
But much time was lost thus picking my ass, so...

I must pull from my asshole my digital member,
Or I will not make the deadline at the end of November...

MiteWiseacreLives!

My oh my the last ten days have been insane!
Why did I start so late?
Is something wrong with my brain?
Oh well, it's off to play testing now,
Looking for advice from a barbarian,
And a cow.

Mandle

I sorted the issues with my code,
It took 3 tries but OH MY GOD!
The game now works,
Just needs some polish and perks.

Tomorrow I have the time,
But perhaps not the skill.
But just to stop needing to rhyme,
Release it I will!!!

Chicky

Working away from home, 13 hours a day, never alone. No time to work on my game, such a pain, mega lame. But I'll be home tonight and to my delight, I have tomorrow booked off.

Is it bad that I'm getting sick of writing in rhymes? Good luck for these precious last days all :)

Eggie

"Six days left?!" I wail and sob
"But this week's when I start my job
I doubt I'll have the weekend free
Oh low am I oh woe is me!"
Just one puzzle's implemented
My code's a mess and quite demented
The anim. work is far behind
And hell, the thing's just half-designed
But what really gets to me
With time such a commodity
Is while I could be drawing sprites
I'm on here writing this old shite D:

EDIT:
Titlescreen by Eliot
I sure like it hella lots!

Chicky

That title screen is amazing Eggie, reminds me of Hylics but with a hydro Sarlacc pit. The screenshot you shared looked equally as awesome.

I'm back home now, final to-do list is finished and it's loooooooong. I've definitely made the game too long.

Also I genuinely scared myself at the weekend, mistyped a room number somewhere and ended up walking earlier areas but with a creepy overlay and eerie music from later in the game, totally caught me off guard.

Mandle

The basic gameplay has been spammed out for testing,
For the next few hours I shall be resting...

WHAM

Yeah, I'm officially out of the race. Stuff came up. Sorry. :(

Chicky

No more WHAM, damn...

How is everyone else doing? My entry is still far from public viewing.

Atavismus

Darn, no WHAM :(

Our game should be ready for the deadline.
Still some stuffs to fix.
But the big part is the english translation.
Also, we'll need beta testing.

What about others?

Chicky, your work is killer! ;)

Myshkin

I'm... nearly there. A long list of things to fix/add. What do we have now, about 48 hours? The play length of my game is shorter than I was expecting based on the amount of work! But it starts, and (almost) ends, with stuff in the middle. I think I can finish it in the next 2 days and honestly call it a "game"

p.s. awesome title screen Eggie!

MiteWiseacreLives!

Don't we have three days (+6hrs in this time zone)?

Ponch

Damn it. Just a few days left and my game isn't quite at the halfway point. I guess I'm out. Glad I never formally announced I was in. :sad:

Myshkin

Ah yeah - I guess today is the third last day. But as I'm back to work on Monday the 30th, I'm not really including that one as I know I'll barely have time to do anything except upload the files (hopefully)

Stupot

Regarding the deadline. Basically I will start the voting and open the next month's contest at some point before I go to work in the 1st of the month (if I have work that day, which this month I do). Being in a Japan it actually would work out a few hours either side of midnight for the majority of Europeans and Americans. But I won't be very strict if someone submits something a few hours later. I do want to avoid having extensions for now because I want each mags to run neatly month to month (at least for the first couple ;-) ) but we'll see how it goes.

Mandle

My game is almost ready to put out,
I even managed to rhyme the word "redoubt",
On the morrow I will iron out the final bump,
I'll release the game then,
Or may my surname be "Trump"...

Mandle

Well, then "Trump" may I be,
Hmmm...I think it suits me,

But I have a release candidate,
No bugs so far...And a date:
November 30,
DAMN! But my monster's so thirsty...

It's been a long row to hoe,
See you all tomorrow...

Chicky

I'll be truly amazed if I finish in time,
these last few days and this game of mine.

Eggie

My brain is a puddle on the floor
My game has a tonne to be done and then more
Worried competitors need not stress
My entry will be a goldang mess

Myshkin

MiteWiseacreLives!

I think all these late nights have made me sick,
Just one more evening might do the trick.
If I could find the drive, down to business get,
I'd jump out of bed and off the toilet!

Eggie

And lo on day 30
Did I finally add some rhymes
It should have been done weeks ago
But I'm pretty bad with time

Stupot

Haha, nice one Eggman. I cracked up at the first verse.

So, 24 hours (or thereabout),
To finish your games and get them out.
So squash them bugs and find your hosts,
And upload your wonderful monsters and ghosts.
Don't worry if they be a little unpolished,
As long as they're fun you won't be admonished.
Still more to do? Time to beg, steal and borrow,
'Cause (not to labour the point) the deadline..
...is...
...tomorrow

Chicky

I'm with MiteWiseacreLives on feeling sick,
finishing this game has been quite the trick.
Only 13 hours left and and much to implement, I'll be leaving work early with a fierce intent.

Myshkin

Hey I'm first to finish?!
I put it down to being in Australia where it is now nearly midnight...

So anyway here we go, presenting:

QuoteSong Animals is a short adventure puzzle game, featuring a variety of strange and fantastic creatures on a quest to free their friends. Explore surreal watercolour worlds and use the power of music to rescue your animal friends.

I feel like I stretched the theme here somewhat, having made a game that doesn't actually have any words in it. But it is still a game about monsters "rhyming" in a way. All the art in this one was done by my sister.
Good luck to the others in your last few hours - looking forward to playing what you've come up with!

And now I'm going to bed.

~~MONSTER WANTS IN (MAGS VERSION)~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is the version of the game I created for the November,2015 MAGS contest.
I plan to expand the gameplay of this game, polish it further, and eventually release a complete version.
This version represents only the bare-bones gameplay which is basically just "Whack-A-Mole" at the moment.
A monster is breaking through the door from the other side. The idea is to hold the door by bracing the sections it is attacking.
Just click on the dark spots that appear on the door as fast as you can. There is no way to survive the encounter with the monster. Your goal is to outlast its onslaught for as long as possible. Your final score is how long you survived plus how many times you blocked the monster.
In the full release all this will change: You will be able to fight back against the monster and possibly even win, or maybe just outlast it until dawn when it will slink away back into the crawlspaces.
Anyways...Good luck and...
Don't lose face!
Headphones Disclaimer:
Spoiler
A lot of games that suggest headphones do so because there is some ridiculously loud jumpscare sound effect (mostly that same one). Not so in my game: I just found that some of the sounds were quite subtle and, to my ears at least, were much easier heard with headphones. There are a few loud noises but I avoided the usual "blow-the-player's-eardrums-out" variety.
I'm happy to play by dem rules, although I have to go to sleep now so i'll have to live with my bugs for the time being :P
I think the restore game gui is broken in the version above, also spotted a few annoying visual glitches. Are we allowed to fix those sort of things after submitting? Maybe, maybe not? :-D
Eggie
I won't have time to play your game until I'm finished and I deserve the best damn it, Chicky.
You're free to fix and tweak and change and
polish if it's dirty,
As long as somewhere in the world
It's still November thirty.
Nice one Chicky. Do you have a screenshot you want to use?
Lots of entries so far and more to come. What a juicy month this is turning out to be :-)
Awesome game by the way Emont. Calming graphics and music, and challenging puzzles.
some indication that you are on a clickable hotspot would be cool, like a different colored mousecursor or a text label or so. Well, a textlabel wouldn't quite so fit to the game, so maybe a sound... something!
HanaIndiana
Myshkin
Good points Selmiak and Mandle. As those puzzles only require clicking on something they seem really obvious to me, but for someone who's never played it before it's probably not clear what can even be clicked on. And I didn't consider a save feature necessary as the game is so short - but again, it's short for me because I made it!
So I'll probably add:
- save option
- cursor change on clickable objects
However I guess to be fair these should only be added after voting is over? Not sure of the rules on stuff like this.
Still early here, Eggie! Two hours to go in my time zone  ;) your fine.
Just finished The Man Only I Can See, not sure if high-res hand drawn art and parallax scrolling have any place in MAGS (I think it unfair to the unartistic...).
I have concluded that your a creepy dude Chicky  (laugh). Fairly disturbing little game...
Mandle, your game was alot of fun! Got 115pts.. will have to have a rematch :) Really good job with the sounds and art.
I think I beat Song Animals, but it crashed during the end sequence.. so sad.. I was really proud of myself for making it there! I found out that I'm nearly tone-deaf, but not entirely :)
Mandle
YAAAAAAAAYYY!!! SOOOOO many entries...and....AND....
It feels so weird but...I don't have to come home from work tonight and work on my game...
I CAN ACTUALLY PLAY YOUSE GUYS'S GAMES!!!
I'm SO excited...I'm even procrastinating and heading to work at the last moment so it feels like I'm working for less time and it will feel like I get home and can start on the games faster!!! (Hey, if it works in my mind then it works... (laugh) )
Stupot
There's still a few hours left. Who else is still in?
Ghost and Cat? You guys have been quiet :-P
Personally I think with the amount of work it takes to make an entry in one month, a few minor usability tweaks after the game has already been submitted would be fine. But that's just my opinion, rules are rules :p
Besides, it sounds like everyone's games are a bit buggy :D
I'm so psyched to finally have free time again. I'll do a GiP thread and proper announcement after work tonight. Well done everyone :)
cat
I almost don't dare to say it out loud,
but for this competition we sadly are out :(
Myshkin
Mandle - good fun, thought the audio particularly did a really good job of upping the intensity. Nice ending :-D
Eggie - not sure how far I got but it seems pretty epic for MAGS! Really nice animation, especially the different facial expressions for the speech. I was enjoying it up until I got this crash:
With Billbis and Atavismus
I have worked on the "Freak Chic" game
It was very important for us
Because it's our first common game !
A big part of the french community forum
Worked on this MAGS monster event
Day after day, it took form
And now it is ready to be sent !
Our hero, Victor, is a difformed servant.
To please Cybele the priestess,
He accepts to go on a quest :
To make a potion, find the ingredients !
Around the country he must go
And win against monsters he should
Will he make the priestess proud ?
Will he make the love grow ?
Eggie
MARION!! I didn't now you were still around. Great now I gotta play all these entries AND the games you've done in the past couple of years that I didn't know about.
Emont: Urrrrrgh, those crashes have been the bane of my existence all month. Next time I'm writing my own replacement Animate() command that can accommodate my horrible organisation skills. The game's also SUPPOSED to autosave in every room but I have to confess I never actually tested that :X
Both issues should be fixed in a bit
@Chicky. I don't really have anything against a few fixes here and there, especially to fix crashes or other game-breaking issues (at least in the first 24 hours or so after submission). I'd prefer that if it avoids the need for extensions.
What are everyone's thoughts on this?
@Cat. That's a shame. Will we be seeing the Ghost/cat project any time in the near future?
Chicky
Good to hear Stu, last night was crazy stressful and I ended up going to work with only 4 hours sleep.(two less than my regular 6 this past month!)
Thanks for this comment mate...It really made my day as my main goal with the game was to deliver as intense an experience as I could. Of course, the game only looks and acts like the image I had in my head to an extent...
The two tentacles that break through the bottom left sections of the door, for example, are part of an extra gameplay feature that had to be left out, but I left them in because I figured that any game with two tentacles can't be all bad, right?
Now, back to the rest of the MAGS game (I just finished yours and commented in the release thread) for my orgy of game playing fun serious critique of the MAGS entries for voting purposes...
Mandle
I'm currently playing Freak Chic and having a great time with it...
I might have some game-breaking bugs though:
SPOILERS ALERT!!!
Spoiler
I have activated the panel puzzle in the werewolf's cave and managed to light up all the buttons...But nothing happens...
Also I filled the flask with swamp water and this prevented me from getting the bile from the chamber pot. I couldn't find any way to empty out the flask so I had to restart from an earlier save point.
Please excuse these comments if they are not actual bugs and there are ways around them built into the game already.
During the end sequence, one of the characters was lagging behind the group.. then the script called for that character to do something and it was not in the current room. (sorry I didn't get to copy the actual error code).
Maybe run a check to see if all characters are in the room before the command, otherwise
Code: ags
character[x].changeroom(player.room, 600, 400); // or whatever...
Very neat game though, I'll have to try again to try and get to see the ending.
Hmmmm...I thought I had tried that...I'll give it another go...
Concerning the headphones: Yeah, a lot of games that suggest headphones do so because there is some ridiculously loud jumpscare sound effect (mostly that same one). Not so in my game: I just found that some of the sounds were quite subtle and, to my ears at least, were much easier heard with headphones. There are a few loud noises but I avoided the usual "blow-the-player's-eardrums-out" variety.
Wow...that's a lot of votes already...
Or maybe not...
I mean...There are 7 billion or so people on the planet, so the fact that 8 people out of 7 billion have already managed to play every single entry and vote on their favorite within 3 days is not entirely inconceivable...
Personally, I've only played 3 so far, and only 2 to completion...
But I'm probably just a slow-poke...
Billbis
Maybe this very inappropriate tweet can explain strange pattern in the voting...
Chicky
Mandle: It looks like Stu posted that just under 24 hours after voting was opened, 8 votes is quite a few in that case!
I was under the impression that voting was generally kept within the forum, after the last MAGS I had lots of friends wanting to vote but I told them it was more of a community competition and that it would be unfair if they voted (despite having played all the entries).
Maybe voting should be tied to an AGS forum login? Or is it already? Either way, I don't speak French but the translation of that tweet seems to read something like 'Vote for France, vote for Chic!' :p
I guess they forgot to add the 'y' ;)
How does everyone else feel about this Hopefully this is just a misunderstanding :)
That would explain something.
I don't wish to suggest any foul play. There's nothing that says you can't invite people from outside the main forum to play your game but if you are going to ask people to vote it would be more sporting to invite them to try all the games and vote for their favourite as opposed to saying 'vote for ours'. It's a small community contest that sometimes struggles to get 8 votes in a whole month, let alone the first 12 hours (a number which has since doubled)
That said, I'm excited by the buzz this MAGS has going on and six games is insane to me (and it could easily have been 9 or 10). I got the "bumper" edition I'd hoped for in my first full month as host and I don't want to let this voting thing become a scandal.
Feel free to PM me if you have any concerns or suggestions, not just about voting but any aspect of the competition. I'm open to tweaking things going forward. My main concern in getting enough people to take part. :-*:-*
Thank you Billbis for tweeting under that and explaining that voters should have played all the games first and then vote for their favorite.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I doubt 24 hours is long enough for that many people to have played all 6 games.
Stu has also mentioned that the votes have since doubled and I'm also going to assume that they are mostly for one game.
I think we need a restart on the voting at a seperate IP to the current one, and this time no kneejerk "Vote for our game" advertising campaigns.
I'm not saying this because I think my game has a chance of winning in a fair race (because I don't)...I'm saying this because I feel sorry for the people who are going to have their win tarnished for them (when they would quite probably have won normally), and for the other entrants who put a hell of a lot of work into their creations.
As things stand the voting is already pretty much a foregone conclusion when in reality none of those voters have played all the entries, and everyone in the contest (winners and non-winners) are going to end up dissatisfied with the outcome, and left wondering what could have been...
MAGS is not all about the winning. It's supposed to be a kick in the butt to get us making and releasing games for our own satisfaction and for the fun of the community...BUT the voting is an important part as well as it is supposed to provide some feedback and entertainment for the participants after the long, hard struggle to release their game.
The current voting, to put it bluntly, is people voting who have not played all the games, and quite probably have not even played the one they voted for. Thus it is meaningless.
I personally think a restart is needed. Just my two cents of course. I'm not going to complain or be offended or ragequit or anything if we just continue on... :)
Pro: bigger team to make game
Con: more of your votes going elsewhere
Although I think everyone gets that.. I'm trying to ignore all this because I really like Chic, silliness.
Btw: to get things going in OSD you have to try and fight the pirates like the unicorn says (in a roundabout rhyming way ;) )
edit: I just read the actual tweet, my french is not the best, but
Quote'Vote for France, vote for Chic!' :p
is a pretty loose translation :) It gave me a much different impression than 'Vote for the French AGS forum's game entry for MAGS Nov 2015, Freak Chic!' .. not very thoughtful but not nearly as questionable.
Billbis
#137
For what I now understand, this tweet only had little effect, as the French AGS twitter account is not that popular and the link was for the game page, not the MAGS voting page.
It seems that one of our team member, who was unaware of the ethics of this competition, went a little over-enthusiast and publish advertisement in 40 (forty!) different forums...
It would have been only me, I would have said to simply disqualify us for this voting, as I totally don't care about who is wining, I do MAGS for making (and finishing) games, not to win the competition. But because other members are involved, I suggest the following:
1) do reset the vote before it is to late.
2) change the url for the vote.
3) do a 2-steps vote: 1st question should be: "have you play through all the 6 games", and 2nd question should appears only if yes was answered to the first one.
If French ass-holes continue to bias the voting process, we can't really make anything more but restrict voting for the AGS forum members...
Sorry for the mess, they was no ill intentions from our part but only a few over-enthusiasts Frenchmen...
For myself, I won't be able to play those promising MAGS game before this week-end, but congratulation for all the 5 other entries!
Mandle
It's understandable that someone who is not aware that the contest's voting has certain requirements got excited and thought they were supporting their team by advertising around. I honestly believe that no ill-intentions were in play. It's more of an honest misunderstanding.
I know I do not harbour any bad feelings whatsoever towards anyone, and I doubt that anyone else does either.
I think as well that the best course is a restart of the vote, and the two-part voting system idea is brilliant, if it is possible to set up (I have no idea)...
Atavismus
Yeah, maybe better reset votes.
Still, I guess open the MAGS to the world is a good thing both for AGS and for our games (but ppl must be aware of the rules).
Games are made to be played and we could bring new people to AGS.
As in real life, a community can't be closed to others imo.
I plan to tweet the link to this tread + a screenshot of the table with all the games.
Is it ok?
Of course, it has always been mandatory to me to play all games before vote.
The Billbis' idea is very interesting, let's see what Stupot think about it.
Also, about team vote I guess it's not a real problem (or it's the same problem that we can't avoid: "vote for friends").
I mean, I'll play all the games (or won't vote).
If I prefer another game than our, I'll vote for this one, it's as simple.
People here are not childish I guess. :)
For sure, as in all games, I don't want to win with cheat.
But maybe we need more rules, even if I'm not on that side.
MAGS is sweat and fun, it's a jam, it's a party, don't let a small tweet ruins it. :)
Congratz all btw ;)
I'm eager to play!
People keep mentioning the weekend, has the voting deadline been announced?
I'm a little stuck on two of the games, I'd better start asking for help 8-0
Edit: December 15 ! That's tonnes of time :)
Mandle
Yeah...It does look like some thought the voting deadline was this weekend...
It's not!
We have until December 15th to play all the games and vote.
I've got two left to go, and the three I have already played:
Freak Chic
Song Animals
The Man That Only I Can See
Have all been incredible!
The quality level is amazingly high this month...DAY-UM!!!
Cassiebsg
Outch, haven't even starter... only played one so far. (laugh)
Well, there's a very big difference about advertising your game/MAGS so others outside the community can play the game(s) (nod) , but it's an entirely other thing to say "go here and vote for game X!" (wrong)
So, yes, do reset the voting... if anything else fails, there's always the choice to revert to PM voting, like Atelier did. ;) (but lets reserve that for "last resort" type of solution.)
There are those who believe that life here began out there...
Okay folks. It seems nobody minds and it's the right thing to do, so:
THE VOTING HAS BEEN RESET!
If you've already voted, please vote again.
The deadline for votes hasn't changed: December 15th
Remember to:
Try all the games
Vote only once
Vote for your favourite
Ponch
But I wasn't able to vote before the reset! My vote wasn't thrown away! If this keeps up I might have to start believing in democracy again. (wrong) ;)
Mandle
YAY Stupot! You made the right choice, oh brave leader...Now everyone, including the team in question, can experience an honest feeling of satisfaction with the results, win or not (but especially in the case of a win)...
Cheers!
Stupot
Just glad we can start talking about the games again (nod)
So far I've played three and I'm stuck on one. So much great stuff though. You guys are awesome.
Mandle
With so many awesome entries it was getting harder and harder to figure out which game to vote for:
At first I thought I would go for Freak Chic because of the sheer tons of work done by the team to make such an ambitious game in such a short time...AND it was great fun!!!
Then I considered the amazing feelings that Song Animals gave me...Such a beautiful game and probably the true timeless classic from the bunch...I feel this game could have a place in the AGS hall of fame for most pleasant gaming experiences ever...
The other entries also entranced me...Well...OSD mostly annoyed and confused me (but I think that was also mostly the point so: job well done!)
But...at the end of the day we are instructed to choose the game that we had the most fun playing and for me that was definately:
Scylla and Charybdis: A Grecian Ship From Olympus U
I must now go and play the original game as I never got around to it at the time of its release, but this Alex dude has mad skillz for making fun games in my book...
Eggie
Thanks man...dle. I'm glad you had a positive experience despite the myriad issues.
So far my vote's swinging to Song Animals but I still have to finish Freak and Dennis.
Cassiebsg
Of all the batch, I've only finished one so far (guess which (laugh)) and have yet to even start on one.
Hope I can do it before the voting deadline.
I did also want it to be fun... but you know time constraints  :P
What caused most confusion, the convoluted Denis-sp33k combined with rhyming or obscure goals/puzzles? (As you guessed I did want it to be highly bizarre as it is an OSD game)
I do want to learn and progress with my game-making 8-)
As for picking a winner, I need to do a little more deliberation...
cat
I think what was most confusing/annoying was the often happening blocking stuff. You are supposed to do something with the coconuts and chest but then those blocking animations and dialogs stop you from doing this.
The text and rhyming were fun!
Oh, don't get me wrong: It was a lot of fun! But yeah: The Denis-sp33k often made it hard for me to understand what the goal was, especially with the cannon...And the blocking animations Cat already mentioned made me want to leave those screens as fast as possible instead of taking time to enjoy the deeper graphical details ;)
But at the end of the day: FUN was had!!!!11!!one!11!
MiteWiseacreLives!
Plan on doing a quick re&re on the game once the competition closes. I'll definitely rebuild those scenes to be non-blocking!  Because it's a lot more complex to have stuff like that running in the background, more bug prone, I chose to block the gameplay just to cut down on dev time. Find it in your heart to forgive me Cat  ;) I know Mandle has :)
Mandle
MiteWiseacreLives!
So I've made my pick finally and as was pointed out earlier a gentleman shouldn't choose his own game... Even though OSD was the bestest!   ( (roll) I was pulverized by the competition in reality.)
   Song Animals by Emont : A lovely game, I liked the musical take on/ abuse of the rhyming theme. Pretty proud of the fact I actually completed it!
   Monster Wants In by Mandle : Great artwork, sound design and a lot of fun to play.
   The Man That Only I Can See by Chicky : Creepy and terrific art, loved the parallax scrolling. More of an interactive fiction than anything, but held my attention to the end.
   Freak Chic by Atavismus, Marion, Bilibis et. al. : Solid overall game, lots of puzzles and things to do! Would like more responses for attempting to use items though and I was surprised how many times I totally overlooked small clickable details (that's on me I suppose).. I felt a little lost quiet often, but this one I think had the most content.
   Scylla And Charybdis: A Grecian Ship From Olympus U by Eggie : Wow, the sheer amount and quality of animations in this one is mind blowing!  8-0 Too bad you didn't have just a little more time, Eggie, to get the transitions working right (the way she turns the wrong way before walking everytime isn't on purpose is it?) and kill a few more bugs.. Funny how This game and Freak Chic both lost me a little due to language barriers  (laugh)
In the end I did choose Freak Chic. Its traditional gameplay and puzzles gave me the most enjoyable experience, although had a super hard time deciding which I enjoyed the most  ;-D Great showing by all!
Finally I finished all games. Each of them had there good and not so good sides and it was a very hard decision. In the end I went with OSD because it was best regarding rhymes, which was the topic of the month.
Voted! :cheesy:
This was a fine batch of MAGS games, bugs and all. :smiley: Congrats to everyone who managed to get their game out before the deadline crushed their hopes and dreams once more... like it always does... sniffle. :cry:
Chicky
I was under the impression everyone else was rushing their entry too, but it seems like you guys nailed it! Ace games this month, I particularly liked Eggie and Mandle's entries, haven't had a chance to get stuck into Freak Chic yet.
I'm a bit gutted that my entry turned out to be such a bore, but you live and learn :)
Billbis
Song Animals by Emont: Great entry! Very nice interpretation of the theme, and neat production. Well done!
Monster Wants In by Mandle Fantastic audio ambiance, and well execution. Not my kind of game, though.
OCEANSPIRIT DENNIS: The Terror of the Ice Princess by MiteWiseacreLives! My very first OSD game, it was great fun, and... some great frustration to, but I guess that's part of the experience. :-D Don't fix it!
The Man That Only I Can See by Chicky For some reason, it is too slow to be playable on my old netbook, will test it Saturday on my desktop!
Freak Chic by Atavismus, Marion, Yo riso et. al. (I didn't play it before, only help making backgrounds). That was great fun to! I played it in French. But that damn STONE PUZZLE!!! We should polish the game and it will be a neat little one.
Scylla And Charybdis: A Grecian Ship From Olympus U by Eggie Superbe animations and nice character design. I certainly didn't get two thirds of the references, but overall I enjoy the experience.
Well done everybody! I'll vote after playing the promising entry by Chicky.
Chicky
Billbis, thanks for giving it a try. If you set the sprite cache in WinSetup to 100mb it runs a lot smoother.
Billbis
It runs fine one my desktop. :)
Fantastic work, reminds me of Limbo and Betrayer. The girl is irritably slow, though.
Well, no I did complete all entry and voted, congrats again everybody for putting together all those nice entries!
Cassiebsg
Oh dear... I've only finished half of them, have tried all though.
Got my favorite, but would really like to finish all before committing and voting. But maybe I won't be able to. :-\
Myshkin
Finally got around to playing them all, and voted. A great lot this time! I'm always amazed at what people can pull off in less than a month. And after personally not making anything for a year or so, I appreciate the pressure/motivation from MAGS to actually complete something (nod)
Cassiebsg
Well, I've made my mind on who to vote for, since in the end it's about the game one enjoyed the most.
I've also ranked them, and I'll give a bit of feedback about each game at the same time.
6. Place: OCEANSPIRIT DENNIS: The Terror of the Ice Princess
Spoiler
Sorry about getting last place! :( But someone had to get it. :P
Unfortunately I did not got to see all the great work TeamPartyWagon put into this game, and I do realize it's a parody, still... I just couldn't get into it! Gave up after 10-15 minutes of being constantly shot from the pirate ship. not being able to do anything, and after I used the sword on the pirates, they just said something unreadable, and continued shotting me.
I admit it! I suck at this game, not particularly found of RPGs and those blocking animations where driving me nuts! I shut down the game never to give it another chance.
5. The Man That Only I Can See
Spoiler
It really pains me to rank this game so low... I had really great expectations about this one. The graphics are stunning, the atmosphere is awesome, and I really honestly wanted this to be top 1! However, it turned out not to have any game play content. It's more like a video that you need to keep a key pressed for it to play. It's a nice story, but that just isn't enough for me.
Now, go work on that character speed and add game play. Then you'll have a gem right there. (nod)
4. Monster Wants In
Spoiler
Nice little "wack-a-mole" game you have here. I suck at it, but at least it was fun to play. (nod)
One would only hope there was a bit more, like actually survive and some puzzles to solve while stopping the Monster from coming in.
3. Freak Chic
Spoiler
Nice game, like the art. A good variety of puzzles too.
For some odd reason I couldn't get into it though. And some of the "puzzles" I could have lived without (Ogre fight, unlocking the necklage). The music puzzle, unless I missed something, is for me very annoying. The tune is just too long for me to remember and play it; there are no visual cues what so ever; not any visible or invisible way of turning the BG music off, so that I can concentrate just on the tune. Also wondering how a deaf (or music "inept") person can solve this puzzle? :-\ )
Have not yet finished the game
2. Song Animals
Spoiler
Really nice atmosphere, great surrealistic, the BG music here doesn't annoy me when trying to solve the music puzzles. This is definitely the most soothing and relaxing game I've ever played!
To add to it, it's great for kids. (nod) Good job!
I have yet not finished this one either as I can't seem to figure out the sequence for the blue mushroom.
1. Scylla And Charybdis: A Grecian Ship From Olympus U
Spoiler
I liked the title screen, but didn't had any expectations about this game, however I just loved it! Despite the bugs, and even needed to restart due to it, it's still the one game that delivered the kind of puzzles I enjoy, superb art and animations, nice story and dialogs, weird characters. And the 70's music, spot on! Though at occasions it was a bit too much.
Hope to see the bug free and improved version of this one! (nod)
Sorry you didn't get to enjoy my game, Cassiebsg... You probably wouldn't have made it much further anyway, because the answer to the puzzle that stumped you was:
SWIM TO THE FLIPPING *RIGHT* JUST LIKE THE NARRATOR SAID TO!!!!!1!!!1!1111!!!11! IT'S SO FRIGGIN' EASY!!1! ITS NOT EVEN RPG!
Spoiler
Sorry, just frustrating when you can't seem to get a message through to the player  :-[ your not the only one who didn't like the blocking animations.. they're gone in the version I'll release in a couple days...
After a false start, voting is OVER.  Thanks to all the entrants for a great first time as host. All the games were enjoyable. My personal vote went to Song Animals. What a gorgeous piece indeed.
The votes have been counted and the results are THUS:
The Man That Only I Can See by Chicky - 1 vote
Monster Wants In by Mandle - 1 votes
OCEANSPIRIT DENNIS: The Terror of the Ice Princess by MiteWiseAcreLives - 3 votes
Song Animals by Emont - 4 votes
Scylla And Charybdis: A Grecian Ship From Olympus U by Eggie - 4 votes
Freak Chic by Atavismus et. al. - 12*
Well done to the the Frenchies :-)
You'll be contacted soon about choosing a topic for January.
(*Freak Chic still had a bunch of votes, but enough of them (5) were from non-French IP addresses to conclude that it likely would still have won.)
Oh cool!!!
Thank you gamers!!!
(and thx for the precision about votes Stupot ;))
French forum is celebrating it's 10 years, it's a great gift for us!
Making that game altogether was a great adventure!
Congratz to all other games!
Those strong and diversified entries made that MAGS a real success, the first for Stupot and not the last for sure. ;)
Thx again!
Eggie
Great job guys! You guys did a real impressive thing!
Good job, everyone. This might be the strongest group of MAGS entries I've ever seen. I was torn between Song Animals and Scylla And Charybdis as my favourite, so to see them tied for second place is… not as cool as first place, but still neat!
I look forward to the numerous promised updated versions!
Mandle
I beg to differ...
My final score was actually:
I got super-pumped to try for a personal high-score in my own game just to make this joke and got it somehow on the first try...
Congratz to all for an amazing round of MAGS!!!
MiteWiseacreLives!
Great job everyone! Congratulations to the French Forum, teaming up to commemorate your 10th was an awesome idea! Look foreword to playing the post-MAGS versions of all these games, mine's almost ready ;)
Chicky
Well done guys :) What a result, all the entries were great and it was super fun taking part.
Myshkin
Congratulations Freak Chic!
I enjoyed all the games this month and it was fun to be part of it. :)
Chicky - I thought the atmosphere and art was brilliant in yours and I think it could be better with either shorter length or more interactivity.
Eggie - Would be great to see your short games (and future chapters?) polished and combined into a full length game some day...
This was a great November, one of the best monthly community activities I have encountered. Thanks to all participants, I hope I can write a review on upcoming AGSArchives.com pretty soon.
