AGS Euro 2016 Prediction League
« on: 06 May 2016, 11:42 »

Football fever is nearly upon us and suddenly we're all armchair experts again.
After a successful World Cup Prediction League in 2014, the world's attentions turn to France on June 10th for
UEFA Euro 2016.

Here's how the prediction league works: Predict the scores, earn points, the person with the most points at the end of the tournament wins the League.

There are some rules, however.  Please read them carefully:
(in spoiler tags to save space)
Spoiler: ShowHide
Rules

(1) I will start taking predictions for the 36 group stage games from the moment I post the thread in AGS and will continue to accept predictions for group stage games until after all teams have played one game (namely, June 14th is your last chance to submit predictions for group stage games).

(2) The League will be closed to new participants on June 14. This is to allow for late comers, though obviously you may not submit predictions for games that have already been played. It is still worth joining even if you join late, because points in later rounds are worth more.

(3a) Scoring will work like this for each game:

If you predict the correct RESULT you score ONE point (RESULT here means correctly predicting the winning team or correctly predicting a tie/draw).
If you predict the correct SCORE you score THREE points (SCORE here means correctly predicting the actual scoreline).
If you FAIL to make a correct prediction you score NIL points
If you FAIL to submit a prediction for a game before the game's kick-off time, you will LOSE one point***

***You will not be penalised for the games you missed if you joined late, but once you join you will be expected to submit a prediction for all future games, and will be deducted one point for each game you fail to make a prediction for.

(3b) During the knockout stages all points are DOUBLED (so TWO points for correct RESULT or SIX points for correct SCORE). For the FINAL all points will be TRIPLED (THREE for RESULT or NINE for SCORE).  I hope this will add some excitement.

(3c) WILDCARD. Every player will have a WILDCARD to be used for any game during the group stages. This will TRIPLE your score for that game, so use it wisely. To play your WILDCARD, clearly state your intention along with your prediction for the game in question.

(4a) How you submit your predictions is up to you, you can do all 36 group stage games now, before the tournament starts, or you can do them in drips and drabs.  Though, the more you do in one batch the easier the data will be for me to manage. Ideally, you'll submit a nice full list of 36 predictions before the tournament even starts, though this is not a rule.

(4b) Please bear in mind that each prediction must be submitted before the relevant game kicks off, so it is probably wise to get them done early.

(5) The latter knockout stages are, for obvious reasons, closed to predictions during the majority of the group stage.  However, you may start submitting predictions for the outcomes of knockout stage games from the moment the fixture is decided up until the game's kick-off time. I will prompt for relevant predictions when the time comes.

(6) A submission is considered 'submitted' if it has been posted in the AGS thread OR PM'ed to me.  The former will be better if you want to share your predictions with other people, although they will all be visible on the Spreadsheet for anyone to see.  To reiterate, The AGS thread and AGS Private Message are the only two ways to submit predictions.  Predictions received by any other means will not count.

(7) Once you have submitted a prediction for a game, it cannot be changed (unless you can convince me there is an extremely good reason for doing so).

(8a) When submitting predctions please use the following format:

Date     k/oTime   TeamA - v - TeamB

swapping the dashes (*) for the number of goals you think each team will score. For example:

Jun-10   20:00   France   -   vs   -   Romania
Jun-11   14:00   Albania   -   vs   -   Switzerland

(8b) Please use the template provided in Spoiler Tags below. It will help you make your predictions more easily and help me to see them and manage them appropriately.  Preferably, make them bold to make them stand out and easier to manage

(9) Only results after normal time count (90 mins + time added on).  Goals scored during extra time or penalties will not be included. So, if you predicted a 1-1 draw and the game goes on to extra tme and finishes 2-1, you will still win the points provided the score at the regular full-time whistle was 1-1.

(10) Tie-break situations. In the event of a tie-break situation where two teams have the same number of POINTS, the player with the highest number of correct SCORES will win. If they are still level, it will go to the player with the highest number of correct RESULTS. If it is STILL level, the person with the fewest deductions will win. And if it is still level after all that, there will be a fight to the death.

The full list of 36 group stage games are in the spoiler tags below.
Please copy and paste these swapping the dashes for your predicted scores.

I will be maintaining THIS SPREADSHEET and league table on a publicly viewable document. I will also keep the league table in this first post as updated as possible, though I won't always be able to update things straight away. But rest assured, if you submitted a valid prediction before the deadline, it will count, even if you can't see it reflected in the spreadsheet straight away. It just means I'm probably asleep or at work.  I'm in the Japanese time-zone through this, so please bear with me.

I think that's all for now. Let me know if you have any Queries.

Good Luck and Happy Predicting!

I've made it all the way to England vs Wales now (a match I remember watching with my granddad about 3 decades ago, back when Ian Rush was my favourite player).  I just can't call it atm... will have another look at the remaining fixtures later and come up with some scorelines.  Not feeling particularly confident about any of them - not enough to use my Wild Card anyway!

The most fascinating thing is that both Germany and Spain seem to have gone off the boil... will they bring back their A game in time for the tournament?

Well, Germany is usually at least decent when they play in tournaments, no matter how good or bad they played beforehand...

True, very true.  More interesting to see whether Spain can bounce back really.  Or could Portugal finally turn up properly at a big tournament?

I actually think England might do pretty well this time and get into the semis perhaps.  Pretty tidy if somewhat unimaginative squad, but if Vardy and Kane are really firing, there's every chance of getting some impressive results.  Nice to see Wales back in the big time, when was the last time they qualified for a tournament?

I would agree re: England - in Harry Kane they finally have a proper front man again. What I would worry about is the central spine behind him, although I think Chris Smalling is looking good at the moment... especially when compared with calamity Cahill. Still, expect them to crash out at the group stage while Wales qualify - Wales to do a Leicester.

Germany will probably win it though... although the hosts could be a contender.

England's midfield is a worry, you do wonder where the defence-splitting passes are going to come from.  I think they have a lot of players that on their day can be very, very good though, and the much maligned Milner is an assist machine.

In all honesty I would love Wales to do well, but if Bale (or, to a lesser extent, Allen) gets injured, I wonder if they've got enough about them to bother any of the better sides.  Bale provides the moments of genius and Allen keeps them ticking over in midfield.

Would like to see someone new win it, would be boring if Germany won again! :-D  It would be absolutely hilarious if Northern Ireland or Albania won it.

As much as it hates me to say it, Milner under Klopp looks like a new player (much like most of Liverpool's squad) and might actually have some value. To be honest, if England are going to stand a chance, G-unit Neville needs to get his boots dusted down - he's the difference maker ;)

Chris Coleman as we speak is busy packaging Bale up in bubble wrap, foam and horse placenta.

In terms of the big teams, I wouldn't mind seeing France or Portugal win it - looking forward to seeing more of Renato Sanches after all the hype.

It would be phenomenal if another Greece/Leicester style story happened.

As a Liverpool fan I've been very happy to see Lovren and Milner in particularly look like new men under the Klopp regime! ;-D But worried we'll keep Henderson... I know he's had injury troubles but honestly he's been awful in every match I've seen this season (admittedly not all that many).  Looking forward to Wednesday!!!

Anyone else going to join in this league btw?

Anyone else in?

There may well be some prizes, but no details yet.

To register your interest for now you can just predict a ha few games and worry about the rest nearer the time.

Let's make this a proper league :-D

That's going be one to watch. Especially if I'm right in saying it's the first time they've played each other for almost ten years (and the first "competitive" game for almost 30).

Less than ONE day away from the opening game.

A few more players would be really nice. Remember, anyone can join up until the 14th to allow for latecomers. So if you're busy today, don't worry.

Don't forget you all have one wildcard which you can play with any game in the first round. This will triple your points for that match.

As I mentioned, there will be a little prize or two for the winners (most likely in the form of game keys) :-)

Oh, and the League Table is ready to go.

I ought to take this moment to thank Khris again, as most of the formulas in the spreadsheet came from his brain for the World Cup and I've just recycled them for Euro 2016. Thanks Khris :-)

Aaa and we're off. Well done to France for kicking us off.
And well done to Sinitrena for correctly guessing the 2-1 score line. 3 points for you.

I won't fill this thread up with tables after every game but I will keep a (reasonably)?up to date table in the first post. So check there often, or just look in the spreadsheet :-)

Even so I scored with my prediction for the England game, I felt a bit sorry for them. It was such a quick and interesting game, they'd have deserved a win.

Sorry, yeah, my use of the phrase 'first round' means the whole of the group stages. You can use your wildcard in any group stage game :)

@CaptainD Superbly placed wildcard there, my friend. That puts you in first place, with a nice 7-point cushion already. But it's still early days, so don't get comfortable :)

Yesterday was good to me, too. 2/3 correct scores. Horray.

Last call for new entrants. Anyone who's been wondering whether or not to join in, you have until the Russia-Slovakia game kicks off on the 15th. The league is well underway, but it's not too late and anything can happen.

Cassie and Tzachs (and me), don't forget to add a few more predictions soon or you might risk some deductions :-)

And reminder to those who still haven't used their wildcard, don't forget. CaptainD is living proof that it pays to use it :-)

Rats, why do they never ever listen to me?? 8-0
I keep telling them "shooting almost in is NOT a score! It's the ball INSIDE the goal that counts!" damn them for not listening! (roll)

And I missed both goals!!! Because the commentator was just randomly commenting and not engaged at all! So I was at the computer expecting to hear a "GOAL"... but it was more like a "goal" I'm guessing, cause I never heard them. :~(
To make matters worse, I had set the tTV on a timer and it turned it self on when the game started... great, but I failed to realized it would shut it self off again... right in the last few seconds of the game, when Ronaldo was about to shot the very last shot (yes, after the hand)... and bum! Black screen... and I was WTF!? (wtf) I hurry to turned it on again, but by the time it did, it was over, the game score was no longer on, Ronaldo was walking with his stupid grin and the Icelanders were celebrating like they just had won the game... and me was "WTF happen? Did it end 1-1 or did he score? Or did THEY score?" (roll)

Group stage only, this time. The knockout stages are already doubled and the final is tripled. Last year we did try wildcards in the knockout stages instead but it didn't really end up adding anything, so I thought this time they could be used to spice up the group stages a bit.

I should point out (and I will update this in the rules) that in the event of a tie-break situation where two teams have the same number of POINTS, the player with the highest number of correct SCORES will win. If they are still level, it will go to the player with the highest number of correct RESULTS. If it is STILL level, the person with the fewest deductions will win. And if it is still level after all that, there will be a fight to the death.

I'm having trouble getting the table to automatically display the above-mentioned rule (strangely. I'm sure it was easy last time). For example, Sinitrena and Sinsin should actually be swapped because Sinsin has guessed more correct scores, but it's not really worth the hassle unless it becomes an issue at the top of the table near the end of the tournament.

Tzachs is unfortunately being stretchered off with a broken metatarsal and we're down to 10 men (and women).

Would anybody (Creamy, I'm looking at you) like to come off the bench in his place? You'll be at the bottom of the table, but it's a game of two halves and there's still all to play for. Everything can (and will) change. If you do fancy the challenge and want to come on as a sub but don't see this message before today's games, I'll let you off the deduction points for today.

Here's a statistic. Creamy has scored 13 points in the 11 games since he came off the bench for Tzachs. That would have put him in 2nd place after the first 11 games of this tournament. Nice stuff.

Yep. And in the knockout stages all points are doubled, so anything can happen :-)

If anyone is interested in seeing their progress (or lack thereof) I have compiled all the table updates into an album and will keep updating it.

Also, don't forget, fixtures for the Last 16 are being decided now. We already have two fixtures in place (Swiss v Poland and Italy v Spain) so feel free to get those predictions in as early as you like.

(7) Once you have submitted a prediction for a game, it cannot be changed (unless you can convince me there is an extremely good reason for doing so).

Jun-21   20:00   Croatia   0   vs   -2   Spain

@Baron. Are Spain really going to score -2 goals against Croatia? (laugh)

I understand that Spain has a very talented side: if anyone can do it, they can! :=

Er.... Since there was a rule against changing predictions, I assumed my Croatia over Spain prediction stood.... :=  Also, judging by the above correspondence, I assumed you were cool with that.  Can I get a definitive ruling?

I thought that it was a typo, but if you were in fact predicting that Spain would score less than Croatia, then You can have the point (not sure where I got the 1 for Croatia from though).

Well, I'm not going to lie to you, it was a type-o.  But I thought I couldn't change it once submitted, so in my mind I was now backing Croatia. (roll)

A typo is a good enough reason to change, and it turns out the spreadsheet formula doesn't recognise minus points anyway. You won't get a point for that but the good news is I forgot to give you your two extra wildcard points, so that is now up to date ;-)

The group stages are over. After 36 games Cassie is leading the table by a tasty margin. Kumpel is in second and (despite what the table says) Baron is in third as he has correctly guessed more results than CaptainD.

From now on, all points are worth double. Here is a full list of fixtures for the Last 16 matches (please correct me if I made any mistakes, I'm still half asleep.

Jun-25   14:00   Switzerland   -   vs   -   Poland
Jun-25   17:00   Wales   -   vs   -   N Ireland
Jun-25   20:00   Croatia   -   vs   -   Portugal
Jun-26   14:00   France   -   vs   -   Rep Ireland
Jun-26   17:00   Germany   -   vs   -   Slovakia
Jun-26   20:00   Hungary   -   vs   -   Belgium
Jun-27   17:00   Italy   -   vs   -   Spain
Jun-27   20:00   England   -   vs   -   Iceland

So the prediction of a draw now is equal to penalty? Or do we have to predict the penalty score? (wtf)

Jun-25   14:00   Switzerland   0   vs   2   Poland    Have a feeling Poland will be too strong for the Swiss
Jun-25   17:00   Wales   1   vs   0   N Ireland       Two incredibly gutsy sides, but I think Bale will make the difference between them
Jun-25   20:00   Croatia   3   vs   2   Portugal      I can see this being a bit like the Hungary vs Portugal game, but thing Croatia will edge it
Jun-26   14:00   France   2   vs   1   Rep Ireland    France should edge this, even though they've not been at their best - yet
Jun-26   17:00   Germany   2   vs   0   Slovakia      Can't see past a Germany win here
Jun-26   20:00   Hungary   1   vs   2   Belgium       This one's fascinating.  Belgium should win though.
Jun-27   17:00   Italy   1   vs   0   Spain           Intriguing tie.  Think Italy will just nick it.
Jun-27   20:00   England   1   vs   1   Iceland       Could well end in a tie.  England will dominate possession but have been a bit toothless up front and susceptible to the counter-attack.

What did everyone think of the first day of knockouts?

I've made a slight balls-up in the spreadsheet where the table doesn't include the R and S points for knockout games. I'll deal with that today. It doesn't affect the Pts column in any way though, and that's what counts :-)

Didn't saw any as I was out most of the day and driving home when Portugal was playing (and no, no radio was commenting the game (roll) ).
But I just saw that despite my negativism over this team, that they managed to score and continue to the next stage, so I managed to predict the final result for Portugal at last! :-D (only a shame that it was after the normal 90 minutes (roll)). Wondering now if we'll meet Hungary again in the 1/2... (laugh)(roll) But let's see what happens in the 1/4.

It was a perfect EURO disaster for me ^^ almost completely 3 x 90 minutes  pure boringness (+another unappealing hour aet... (roll) ). Score-wise I got a t least two right results... I tried to hate Shaquiri for scoring against poland in the last 10 minutes and destroying my prediction, but his goal was just too incredible 8-) Too bad the swiss team is K.O. ...

Now I am excited about my home team and confident Jogi's eleven will hit the sloavakian where it hurts (gameplay-wise!).

Jun-30   20:00   Poland   1   vs   0   Portugal    Not really sure about this one but would like to see Poland win (sorry Sandra!) - more to the point, I would like to see Ronaldo lose 8-0 (roll)
Jul-1   20:00   Wales   1   vs   3  Belgium        Belgium starting to show why they're so highly ranked.  I think they'll go through.
Jul-2   20:00   Germany   0   vs   1   Italy       This will be a cagey affair, I've been really impressed with Italy so I'm backing them to go through.
Jul-3   20:00   France   2   vs   1   Iceland      I fancy France to come through here.  Though they've been a bit dodgy so who knows?  I think home support will carry them over the line.

By this time I have literally no idea, how these matches could end... ??? ???
They all deserve to be in this stage of the tournament. I am only sure, the final scores will be very close runs and everyone is going to be a thriller match.

Jun-30   20:00   Poland   1   vs   2   Portugal (I would love to see Portugal fail, but still they are to strong for an underdog like Poland.)
Jul-1   20:00   Wales   1   vs   1   Belgium (I guess the Welsh get through in the aet or will be victorious in the penalties)
Jul-2   20:00   Germany   1   vs   0   Italy (It's a horror match for every german fan since that terrible half final match in 2006 :( We must beat them this time!)
Jul-3   20:00   France   1   vs   2   Iceland  (OH YES, THESE AWESOME ICELANDERSSONS HAVE TO TRIUMPH ONCE AGAIN! :D)

The problem for Poland is that they basically had one type of attack - try to race to the byline and then do a cute cutback for Lewandowski.  Worked great the first time but after that... not so much.

Jul-6   20:00   Portugal   1   vs   1   Wales (I'll give a tie a go, but have a feeling we will lose, while my heart says win win win!)
Jul-7   20:00   Germany   1   vs   2   France (Sorry Germany, but I think France will win, based on the little I have seen.)

Here is the penultimate table going into the finale. It's still nice and close, which is great :-D

Bear in mind that Cassie technically is in the #1 spot as it stands due to having more scores than CaptainD. And also, Baron is above Haggis for being equal on scores but having more correct results.

I will take an extra moment to adjust the table properly after the final in the case of any tie-break situations :-)

Well done Cassiebsg. You are the Winner!!! ;-D :-D ;-D

I've made you a little trophy.

You can use or not. Sorry my pixel art is not as good as your prediction skills. Haha.

As the winner, Cassie gets first choice of the following Telltale Steam keys:
  • Sam and Max: Devil's Playhouse
  • Back to the Future

As runner-up, Baron will get sloppy seconds.
(If either of you have both of those, I shold be able to sort something else out :-) )

Good game everyone. That was a lot of fun. See you in two years for the World Cup :-)

Well done Cassie!  (Also well done Portugal and even Ronaldo, I don't particularly like the guy but as a footballer you can't say he doesn't deserve it, an amazing talent coupled with incredible work ethic.)

Thanks Stupot+ for hosting this, it was great fun! ;-D

Congrats Cassie - what a tournament it has been for you!

I have no idea how I ended up in 4th!? I was second bottom for most of it!

Agree with D, don't like Ronaldo myself but he certainly wanted it and trains hard. Congrats to Portugal - proving you don't need a golden generation to win things. England need to employ their coach! He's a Euros maverick!

Also thanks Stupot for hosting!

See you all in two years... hopefully Scotland will be BACK for that one! For now I will enjoy the success of Andy Murray's resilient brilliance... at least until August when fantasy NFL starts! Wooo!

We can make this happen! New AGS Awards category - greatest unintentional tennis reference? If only Cassie had called her recent MAGs title, Out of Agassi.

Thanks guys :D

I pass my prize to the next in line though, I don't have a steam account and I have little time to play games anyway. (roll)

I'm just happy we won, and I'm as amazed that they actually won as that I won. 8-0
And the golden generation never won anything due to the fact that we were missing these amazing guys in the defence! And that is what made all the difference as far as I'm concerned! (nod)
