10 YEARS OF AGS

Where to begin really, who to mention, who to remember?

I started out this very day (well, about this day), 10 years ago, being 18 with the hopes of making videogames. And AGS has been an integral part to that, even if, I've decided to shy away from it, but the community, more or less, has stood by me. Not as mass always, sure, that's too much to ask of people anyway - but as individuals, they sure have. I've met some of you in real life, some I haven't, some I hope to do so, one day. To some I've been unjust, and childish, it would be a shitty thing not to admit that, and I've surely let my ego get the hold of me on countless occasions, but never have I ever not unpinned or unbookmarked AGS from my browser. It would be like tearing a big part of me apart. I've met wonderful people around these parts, and m0ds. Damn, m0ds is horrible. I've had the luxury of working with talented people, and italians, italians are the worst. It has been a sweet ride, and I wouldn't change it for anything, so for once, perhaps truly, I'll humble myself, and say

Thank you.
Worked on Strangeland, Primordia, Hob's Barrow, The Cat Lady, Mage's Initiation, Until I Have You, Downfall, Hunie Pop, and every game in the Wadjet Eye Games catalogue (porting)

Thank you for sticking around. I don't think this community would be the same without you. <3

Thank you.
You're welcome. (laugh)

But on a more serious note, it's great having you around. qptain Nemo said it best:

Although I also think that goes for just about everyone on this forum. :)

Fitz

Yes, and also thank you for that one game that had me rage-quit way more than either of the Hotline Miamis (laugh) And for that outro song that made all of that pain and anger just wash away (nod)

Radiant

Ten years and you haven't even worked on any games yet! :P

Chicky

Word up, Jim.

You're a good dude. I second Fitz, although I've yet to reach the outro >:(

NickyNyce

I just realized that I went over the 5 year hump back in March. Wow, time does fly.

It's been a lot of fun. This is the one and only website I go to and post. AGS has become a part of my daily grind actually. I always seem to stop in at least once a day.

Congrats on 10 years dualnames.

Stupot

Happy 10th AGS birthday Dualsy.
Mine is coming up next month. I wish I could say I've acheived the same amount of awesomeness in that time.

ThreeOhFour

That's a cool milestone, nice one! :cheesy:

Joking aside, it's pretty fascinating how time flies. Can't believe 2006 was ten years ago.

It's funny that the community seemed much more active back then, but we have so many more quality games now, with commercial titles released on a regular basis.

tzachs

Happy birthday!
So what would you consider your personal best AGS accomplishment? Hitchhiker? Primordia? The awards?

selmiak

Dualnames

Single biggest accomplishment, would be passing through the test when I signed up. :DDD

Joking aside, in terms of technical and emotional effort (not result) it would have to be Until I Have You. In terms of significance, it would have to be Primordia.

Scary too, and it seems to get worse the older you get. Casting my mind back, 1995-2005 seemed so much longer then 2005-2015!

Where are you heading to? Now with the adventure renaissance may coming to an end, I wonder which path you go as an Indie developer. Not wanting to be left behind here.

I think the best idea is to ignore what is currently popular in the game market and just make whatever concept you yourself would be interested in playing.

If you try to follow trends you will always be a slave to them, and nothing you make will have any real heart or passion in it.

Dualnames

Moving away from AGS as an engine, doesn't mean i am abandoning anything. The reasons are practical, not emotional.

10 years? No you haven't.... Oh you have indeed!
Which means apparently I've been on this forum for 9 years this month. What happened? I had so many goals and dreams... and all I made was Road Racer. lol

Are you working with Unity now?

Dualnames

Yep, well I have done a silly project with it before, and by silly i mean a bicycle VR thingie, but that never came out to be. So I'm slowly working on a project, nothing to show yet, except I think a gif I posted.

Congrats on your 10 yrs AGS achievement Jim!

Here's to 10 more! With Unity.

:P

Thanks for the things you helped me with over the years, like the black bars module... actually do you still have a copy of that? (laugh)

Dualnames

I don't think I do, but i could rewrite it if you want me to.

Since a story for my team Adventure is about to be written, such a module would be certainly useful â€" if it's that what I believe it is.

Ponch

How did I miss this thread for so long??

Congrats on 10 years, Duals!

Gord10

AGS has an important part in my teenagehood, too.
Games are art!
My horror game, Self

Tabata

Whoaa! 10 years is a loooong time! Congrats!

If anything, I think the AGS community is to be commended for its resilience. In an era where entire social networks collapse and everybody on them moves to the next great thing, this place continues to be the oasis that it always was.
The fediverse needs great indie game developers! Find me there!

Stupot

Today is my 10th AGS Anniversary :-)
I can't claim to have acheived much greatness in terms of game-making, but I'm proud to be part of this wonderful group of friends.
If you'll have me, I'd love to stick around for another 10.

Happy tenth anniversary, I hope you stick around for those next 10 years. :-D
And the ten after that, if this forum is still here by that time.

Cassiebsg

Yeah! (nod)
Congrats! I wish I had found AGS much earlier than I did, you guys are very lucky. ;)
I probably looked for it a year or 2 before it come to exist... and by then I had "moved on". :~(
There are those who believe that life here began out there...

After a decade of apprenticeship in adventure-making, you rank now as a master of this craft, Stupot-sensei :) Have you got yourself a befitting blue cup already?

Phemar

31st of December was my 13th anniversary. It's amazing how time flies and how little I've actually completed in AGS.

A couple of crappy games when I was a kid, and a thousand half done games and script modules. Oh well, maybe one day I'll release something awesome.

I'm glad I'm not the only. (laugh)

m0ds

Congrats stu! Now that multiple members are reaching 10 years, I presume it's only natural that in the next few years we'll all start dying off ;)

Ponch

Congrats, Stupot÷ :cheesy:

Chicky

Yay stu! Congrats on hitting the big one zero :-*

This thread really is a testament to how great the AGS forums are. I'm sure I don't just speak for myself when I say how much it means to me that there are still friendly faces about, those same faces that put up with my pre pubescent txt sp34k and nonsensical rants many moons ago, 14 years? Blimey.

I've spent most of my time here redesigning Guard Duty and making false promises about it's release date, so nothing particularly notable...yet.

Retro Wolf

I love this community, even when I've moved to different engines I've always checked in. I remember a couple of years ago there was a lull in forum posts. I tried looking for other communities like this one but failed. Other forums are either dead, far too busy (your posts would be knocked off the first page within a day), or just toxic. Congratulations on reaching 10 years! I'll be there in a couple years myself!

Tabata

Hey - we got such a lot of fresh (g)oldies?

I love you!
You make me feel so young

cat

So, today it's up to me to write in this thread:

10 years of AGS here as well ;-D

I can't believe it's been 10 years already. I had an amazing time here at the forums, playing games, making games, talking to wonderful people and even meeting quite a bunch of them in real life.

Bring on the next 10 years!

Danvzare

Wow, congratulations Cat. :-D

Stupot

Congrats Cat! For some reason I thought You'd been around longer than me.
Here's to another 10 years (nod)

When I met up with you, Raeff and Stupot that was the first time I had ever met friends I had only known online in real life, and it was a wonderful time, and Stu's sunburn was one of the funniest things ever (when will Brit's learn about sunscreen?!)! I have met up with Stupot once since then but hope to do so again and again now that he is married and locked into life here in Japan (we gotta finally urban explore that abandoned Love Hotel, take the photos for backgrounds, and tell its story this coming summer!)...

I guess I wanted to say that meeting you guys was a great first experience for me and here's to the next ten years as well! I plan on being here for them!

cat

Thanks guys!

@Mandle: We also enjoyed that meeting a lot! Looking forward to your game :)

Andail

Fun fact: When I met up with Chrille in Göteborg, 2001, that was the second ever IRL meeting between AGSers, the first being Layabout visiting DGMachphee at his work somewhere in Australia.
