Inventory items

I woke up this morning and had a sudden realization: I need to go on an adventure! I need to drop everything at once and simply go. I know what you may be thinking, but no. You can't talk me out of it and you can't stop me, I've made up my mind. I'm leaving and I'm going to have a grand adventure filled with spetacular sights and unforgettable experiences.

However, there is something you all can do for me. I've still got a little bit of space left in my backpack and I would gladly hand over some pixelated coins to fill it up:

1st:

2nd:
[imgzoom]http://i.imgur.com/Mpk92hS.png[/imgzoom]
3rd:
[imgzoom]http://i.imgur.com/nZxiZ6Q.png[/imgzoom]

Rules:
- Draw a sprite of an inventory item
- No size or color limits
- Add a short sales pitch (optional)

And please try to be reasonable, I'd rather not lug around huge buildings, funky spaceships or a herd of cows.
You have until January 29th.

This hand-held computer can be used to hack terminals, you never know when you might need to hack a terminal!!

DBoyWheeler

I'm in.  For this, I decided to keep it simple.

A Crystal Ball item.  Maybe a sorceress dropped it, and she needs you to retrieve it--similar to Matoya's Crystal in the original Final Fantasy, only in this case, it's an AGS game.  Or maybe it could be used to solve other puzzles.  You can interpret this how you like. :P

My inventory item is:

[imgzoom]http://i.imgur.com/IcCQBTc.png[/imgzoom]

Lower Manhattan!

With a population of just over 1.6 million, Manhattan is the most densely populated borough of New York City. Popular attractions include Central Park and the Empire State Building.

Spoiler

Just kidding. It's really a Manhattan keyring:

[imgzoom]http://i.imgur.com/yj8NlqW.png[/imgzoom]

That's something you CAN carry around in your pocket. And you never know when a keyring might be useful!

Mandle

Hahaha...Gurok, that was awesome!

But now I really am itching to play a game where you have to carry around Lower Manhattan in your inventory...

Cassiebsg

Yeah, sounds kind of cool!
"Honey, I shrunk Lower Manhattan!" (laugh) (I know, band pun and bad movie, but... (roll) )

Here's my entry: [imgzoom]http://orig02.deviantart.net/1850/f/2017/012/c/3/cassette_by_danvzare-dav4rer.png[/imgzoom]
A cassette tape. Now I know what you're thinking, what do I need an outdated thing like a cassette tape for. Well I'll have you know it's in the top fifty most common items in adventure games.
And you can use it for all sorts of things. Maybe it has something interesting on it, or maybe you need it to record something which you could playback later, or maybe you need the tape inside it to tie something together.

Whatever you use it for, you'll probably need a handheld tape recorder (sold separately). [imgzoom]http://orig00.deviantart.net/2380/f/2017/012/a/a/recorder_by_danvzare-dav4ru9.png[/imgzoom]
(Warning: cassette may not fit inside recorder.)

I love making inventory items. :-D

I'm just gonna spam this post so I get the darker background for my transparent background sprite...

Pulley With A Rubber Chicken In The Middle

Ha ha!  Spoofing the classic Monkey Island item.  Well played.

Danvzare

Mandle, that has got to the greatest inventory item I have ever seen!
I think we're done, we already have our winner.

Twirlly

Danvzare, looking at your entry I feel like you had a preview to my hopeful MAGS entry this month. I could use the graphic help.

Mandle, yeah we see what you did there. I guess reversed words confuse lawyers lol
Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!

Hey if you want some help with graphics for a MAGS entry, I'd be glad to pitch in (especially if it's about inventory icons). Just send me a PM. :-D

Ponch

I'll see Danvzare's outdated cassette tape and raise him one 5 1/4" floppy disk!

I'd post the even larger 8" floppy, but that would be too much old school to handle.  :=

I hope Hobo comes across some outdated computers on his adventure, because this disk contains a whopping 360 kilobytes of freeware Oceanspirit Dennis assets!

Gurok

Thanks Mandle and Cassie for the comments.

I would love it if we could get the other stuff mentioned in the initial post (a funky spaceship and a herd of cows) as semi-useful items.

I dare you to make that 8" floppy, Ponch.

Blondbraid

I thought it would be fun to add a MacGuffin into the mix, so here I present the book of Thoth,
said to contain powerful spells written by the Egyptian god himself.

I chose to draw the book of Thoth because I really, really like the story behind it, it's a timeless tale with all the ingredients for a great adventure and I'd love to one day see someone try to make a game adaptation.
Here is a link for those who want to read it!

Gurok, for some reason, I am unable to view the image you uploaded. I tried visiting the direct link with another browser, and even tried a proxy (thinking that the host might have been blocked by my ISP for some god knows what reason---Pastebin is banned here, for instance) but to no avail.

Can you please your image to a better host? kthxbye.

@Blondbraid Nice story, thanks for sharing. And beautiful inventory item!

Are you crazy? At this scale, that would make that 40x40 sprite something close to 43x43! That's too much to ask of anybody!

kconan

That 5.25" floppy needs an Electronics Boutique brand disk notcher!

Ponch

A disk notcher?!? But that would make my factory-spec'd single-sided disk into some sort of pirate hacker double-sided disk!! What kind of leet warez madness is this? Have you been reading those antisocial postings on the BBSs again? Probably one of those forchans I've heard about on the news!

Okay, I've fixed it. For some reason, the image links broke.

Accepted! :-D

Actually a drone with stealth and camera for your everyday use. Now, if I could just find that remote! I know I put it somewhere... (laugh)

Spoiler

A bigger size of the item, not useful as inventory item sprite though. ;)

I had fun doing this one... I guess it's obvious inspired on... (laugh)(roll)

Damn you people and your crazy shenanigans :-D

Loving all the great stuff I see here. That crystal ball would sure be useful if I ever needed hints to solve puzzles. And look at all this hi-tech stuff: hacking computer, floppy disks, cassette tapes and recorders, disk notcher, stealth drone. Mix all that with powerful Egyptian spells and it looks like I'm preparing for some crazy magical retrofuture adventure. Hmm... I wonder if that keyring can open beer bottles or is it just another pretty face? That pulley with a rubber chicken seems kind of a game breaker though - is there a problem that I couldn't solve with it?

Hobo

Thanks everyone for these great item suggestions! Sadly, I only have enough room for 3 of them and I'd like to rely on your expertise to find out which ones are the most useful, relevant and reliable.

Here's the selection:

Voting is open to everyone and lasts until February 2nd (most likely around 22.00 forum time)

Voting system:
1st place = 3 points
2nd place = 2 points
3rd place = 1 point

Let's get voting!

DBoyWheeler

My votes:
1st: Blondbraid (because I can so see the Book of Thoth be the central plot, or at least a very important item, in a game)
2nd: Ponch (very good job depicting a floppy disk in modern style--plus I can see a game taking place in the mid 1980's that would make use of this)
3rd: Mandle (at the very least, I see this as an Easter egg item that can be traded for a more important item)

Danvzare

1st: Mandle (Because that is the greatest invention I have ever seen!)
2nd: Gurok (You never know when you might need a perfect 1/1000th scale replica of Manhattan.)
3rd: Ponch (The perfect accompaniment for my cassette tape and recorder.)

kconan

Riaise

Misj'

Ponch

1) Mandle (there's no puzzle it can't solve)
2) Blondbraid (for dealing out magical justice)
3) Kconan (with this widget, you can double the usefulness of the first two items. You'll be unstoppable!)

Gurok

1. Blondbraid (lovely colours)
2. Cassiebsg (very clean rendering)
3. Mandle (best concept!)
[img]http://7d4iqnx.gif;rWRLUuw.gi

Adeel

1. Gurok (he bribed me to do so)
2. Ponch (my first computer game came on it, although it surely wasn't OSD)
3. Oldschool_Wolf

Twirlly

1. Danvzare: All the information you could save and use to extort people. Also could hold music for adventuring
2. Gurok: It can house an ant that can be trained to do um... stuff for little insects that can carry 5000 x their weight
3. Mandle: Well it worked once... if it ain't broke, don't fix it (laugh)
Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!

It's always brains over beauty for me, so I counted the useful votes. Mmm... brains...

It took lots of fiddling and sorting out, but I somehow managed to squeeze four items in my already filled-to-the-brim backpack. I feel like nothing can stop me now!

Come grab your hard-earned bags of pixelated coins!

Good show, Mandle, Ponch, and Gurok.

And congratulations Blondbraid--it seems Thoth hath smiled upon thee!
:=

Danvzare

Congratulations you all.
It was fun seeing all the different types of inventory items everyone made. :-D

Mandle

I'm just grabbing my swag of pieces-of-8-bitcoins and making a dashing pirate exit via the nearest swingable chandelier on my stupid chicken pulley!!!

See all ya suckers in the next round!!!!

Fun round and congrats to the winners!

You know if I notched the other side of that disk Ponch, you could store OSD Vol II on it as well.  Just say the word.

Ponch

Don't wisecrack with me, Kconan, or else I'll whomp you with my giant bag of pennies! :=

kconan

Easy, that notcher can do cow earmarks as well!

Blondbraid

Thank you everyone!  ;-D
I mostly made the sprite because I wanted to share a link to a story Iove, but I'm happy that you liked it! I'll try to come up with something as soon as I'm able.
