Spoiler
Case #10
In the middle of the night, a mother sneaks into the bedroom where her son is sleeping and kills him.

(Explain the reasons and circumstances for what happened.)

Yes
Was her son a child? (younger than, say, 13 years old)
Is the killing intentional? [But...]
Did the son look somehow like the man she intended to kill? ["Somehow" â€" see next question]
Was her son completely under the blanket when she killed him? [Sure, that works]
Did she already intend to kill a person before she entered the room?
Was the mother in her right mind when she did it?
Did she kill him with a knife?
Is the bedroom in the house they live in?
Would it have ended differently in bright daylight? [I don't think it could have happened in broad daylight]
Did she want to kill a human?
Did she hope to accomplish something else than getting rid of the person with the murder (e.g. inheritance, to make an event happen...)?
Had she planned a "home invasion gone wrong"? [Something like that]
Was the person she tried to kill related to her husband?
Did she intend to kill her stepchild?
So that her son would be the only heir of her husband?

No
Did she turn herself in? [Doesn't really matter, but let's say no]
Does the son have an incurable disease?  (Is this a case of euthanasia?)
Does the mother realise that she's killed her son? [Not right away]
Did she know she would kill her son before she did it?
Did she think it was her husband?
Is the murder weapon relevant to this case? [Not particularly]
Had the mother taken any drugs? [Not to the point where it's relevant to the case]
Had the mother had any alcohol? [Ditto]
Had the mother inhaled any chemicals? [Ditto]
Does the mother have any mental illness? [Open to interpretation, but it was not an act of pure insanity]
Did she shoot him?
Did she suffocate him? [No, let's go with the knife]
Did she think it was an intruder / burglar?
Was it the son's bedroom she sneaked into?
Was it the parents' bedroom she sneaked into?
Did she want to kill her husband?
Is the killing an act of mercy, saving the victim from a much worse fate? (for instance certain starvation or a nuclear apocalypse)
Was the mother sleep-walking?
Were they the only people in the house at the time?
Was the mother blind?
Were her own parents in the home?
Were her husband's parents in the home?
Was she trying to kill her father/mother in law to inherit something?
Was the person she tried to kill her sibling?
Was the person she tried to kill her husband's sibling?
Was it the bedroom of the nanny?
Did she think she was killing the babysitter?

Irrelevant
Were they religious?
Did they have a pet?
Did she intend to get away with the murder without being caught by the police?
Did she intend to get away with the murder by winning the trial in court?
Did she intend to get away with the murder by framing somebody else? [Yes, but this isn't really relevant]

Ambiguous
Did she plan the murder for a longer time? [Yes and â€" at least in my mind â€" no, depending on exactly what you mean]
Was the person she wanted to kill a relative? [Depends on how you define a relative]
Was the person she tried to kill related to her/family? [See above]
[close]

Yes
Did it say in the will that the inheritance would go to "my eldest son"? [Not the will, more like the law... or we could say the inheritance is something that can't be divided]

No
Did the stepchild know about her plan and make the son to sleep in his bed because of that?
Was the "inheritance" something that could save the life of only one of the two sons (like a heart transplant)?"

Was the inheritance a property?
Was the inheritance a title?
Was the inheritance the throne?

Ah, I suspect you have hit upon the truth about the inheritance!

Yes indeed!

Case #10
In the middle of the night, a mother sneaks into the bedroom where her son is sleeping and kills him.

Solution
There was a king who had two sons. The old queen had died given birth to the older one, and the king had married again, so the two princes were half-brothers. They were the best of friends. But the new queen was jealous of the crown prince, wanting her own son to be the heir. So one night she sneaked into the older prince's bedroom to stab him to death, thinking to blame an assassin. However, the younger prince had gotten scared in the night and (since he was a bit afraid of his mother) gone to sleep in his big brother's bed for comfort, so the queen murdered her own son by mistake.

(Initially I was thinking of a whole thing where they change bedrooms, giving the queen her chance, but then the younger kid gets scared and creeps back to his own familiar room, but I figured it would make the riddle too complicated to solve.)

So I declare CaptainD and Sinitrena (building on the work of many others) to have solved the case. Congratulations! ;-D

CaptainD

Good one Snarky.

I'll try to think of a new one or Sinitena is welcome to post one first.

Kumpel

Fantastic case! And the process of solving it was really entertaining. That's why I love the game's concept :D
Thanks to you guys for making this thread great fun :)

I am looking forward to the next mysterious incident!

Mandle

Snarky, that was a really fun round, and also an excellent example of how to build a really strong mystery that is both fun and complex to solve...

I have been taking notes!

Sinitrena

Good round, Snarky. Let's see how this one goes:

Case #11

They saved him, then she died. What happened?

CaptainD

"They saved him, then she died." - are we talking about 2 different people here?  (Otherwise I'm thinking sex-swap operation!)
or...

Was "she" his mother?  Did she die giving birth?

Mandle

Yeah, sex-change operation gone wrong?

The man went flatline during the operation but they brought him back to life, but after they had completed the sex-change she flatlined again and died?

Sinitrena

Case #11
They saved him, then she died. What happened?

Yes
Are we talking about 2 different people here?
Was "she" his mother?
Did she die giving birth? [Close, but not quite there yet.]

No
Yeah, sex-change operation gone wrong?
The man went flatline during the operation but they brought him back to life, but after they had completed the sex-change she flatlined again and died?

That'll be a fast case.

Tabata

Did she give him her heart literally?

Mandle

Were the "he" and "she" both humans?

Sinitrena

Kumpel

Is "he" her son?
Did she die because he was saved or isn't there any causality and this was fate/coincidence?

dayowlron

Did they do a cesarean section then she died because the incision got infected?
Pro is the opposite of Con                       Kids of today are so much different
This fact can clearly be seen,                  Don't you know?
If progress means to move forward         Just ask them where they are from
Then what does congress mean?             And they tell you where you can go.  --Nipsey Russell

Tabata

Did they have an accident?
Is the son a new born?
Was he born ill?

CaptainD

Sinitrena

You got it!

Did she die because he was saved? [There is no real way to say if she had lived (and her son died) if they hadn't done a cesarean, so it's fate and causality both to some degree.]

dayowlron, your turn.

CaptainD

Since I also got (with the help of yourself and others) Snarky's one, I'm putting one up.  Hope this one is okay...

Many people see Colin stabbing Brian to death.  Brian's body is recovered nearby one week later, evidently having been stabbed to death, but Colin is not even considered a suspect.  Why?
