Topic: Misunderstood Motives
This month's guidelines were set by Crimson Wizard

Misunderstood Motives

People may misinterpret others' actions. Think of a kind-hearted altruist, who was blamed to be sycophant. Think of a villain, whose cunning strategy made him/her look like a people's hero. Or maybe it was not strategy, but a sequence of (un)lucky curcumstances?
Or, perhaps, this may be a story of mutual misunderstanding, where two people hate each other for something that neither had intended to do.

Rules:
In your game there should be someone or something whose motives are largely misinterpreted by other characters, or even the player.
The true motives must be made known to the player at some point (it does not matter when exactly, you may reveal them right in the beginning).
It is not required for the true motives to be revealed to other characters.

Ending: January 31st

What is MAGS?

Started in 2001, MAGS is a competition for amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favorite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.

Rules

• You may work in a team to produce an entry.
• You are not allowed to use any material created before the competition. Your game must be completely new! An exception is music and sound; you can use any audio that is freely available to the public.
• Any modules and templates featured in this board are also allowed.

Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualise your game following the month's criteria (see top). Second, create your game fueled only by coffee. Finally, post your game in this thread, including:

âÅ"“ A working download link
âÅ"“ The title of your game
âÅ"“ A suitable in-game screenshot

At the end of the month, voting will begin, usually lasting for fifteen days. The winner chooses the next month's theme, and their name and game is immortalised in the MAGS Archive. For more information, please visit the Official MAGS website.

I am working on an action game. Not sure how I'm going to work the theme into that.

Slasher

Why shouldn't an action game fit into the theme? I can think of a few...

I was thinking of Mario when I posted but then thought of Dragon's Lair and how unsexy the ending could have been if this were true.

I think that Braid already did that plot twist with the eloped princess.

Anyway, another typical twist you can use is when the villain is captured/defeated by the hero, but then just cackles "It was my plan all along!", there's a cliche ripe for parody!

It's the AI. They just won't become self-aware. They're have access to over 200,000 words, but all they use is "EXTERMINATE!". Also, they're terrible on rough terrain.

Well... I did a bit of coding tonight that sets up a lot of the gameplay so I may be able to get the game done in time...

We shall see...

(Also: you play the bartender in the game so you get other people drunk, not yourself... ALthough that actually gives me an idea that could be fun if time allows...)

Jack

Wow, a release already. That's one for sure, then.

I got over the AI hump. I got the algorithm I spent all the time on to work, and then I just went with a super simplistic solution that works much better.

The game is technically playable now, it's just a matter of how much stuff I have planned that I can put in it.

Congrats on finishing your game already, Slasher.
I don't know if I'll manage to finish mine on time.
Here's one of the backgrounds I drew for my game:

Right now I'm in the process of drawing sprites & adding animations to my game

EDIT: Sorry Slasher (and others), I can't finish the game on time. It was my own mistake to choose to do this during an exam period. It's exhausting to do the exams & MAGS at the same time.

Slasher

Yes, that is a shame Ibispi..

Oh, well. Still three of us may make it, hopefully...

Riaise

I'm dedicating tomorrow night and Wednesday to completing my game but will still have to see how it goes.

I've already cut the concept down from the original idea and it may need further cutting to get done on time. But that's the way it goes, eh?

Jack

Yes, I've stopped adding features and started adding necessities. Hopefully I will have some time after to add the best feature of all.

I'm going to have to back out of this MAGS because I cut back the concept of my game to the point where I felt it was not interesting enough to release in that form.

My initial vision was a bar that customers came in and out of and the bartender gained an insight into their lives via that interaction...

But that didn't happen.

What I could have released was much less than that and was starting to fall into just a Diner-Dash kind of gameplay of serving drinks before the customers run out of patience...

I did want that to be a part of the gameplay but not the everything and didn't want to code a bunch of boiler-plate over the game in a rush and then have to go back in and strip it back out...

Summary: I got lazy...:(

Slasher

Wise words, Mandle... If it don't feel right...

Sorry to hear though (nod)

A horses falls at the fence not far from the winning post (laugh)

Jack

Admit it, Mandle. Those cut up faces were haunting your dreams and you had to stop before they cross into this realm or pull you into theirs.

As for me, I can get it releasable and it might make sense, but there will be no awesome extras.

CONTROLS: Up, Down, Left, Right

EPILOGUE: I ended up having to leave out a lot of cool features, which includes simple combat. (The ships and checkpoint poles are placeholder art, for frigsakes). Your ship is a hair faster than Chad's, so once you figure out overtaking it should be (too) easy to get 1st place. Mess up and you will have a challenge on your hands.

Thanks for the entries guys. Real life has come up so I'm a bit busy.
Who fancies an extension until Sunday Night (GMT)?

Also the new Feb MAGS thread will be a teeny bit late but it will be up later today.

YAY can't wait to play the Jan entries! The two so far look very intriguing. I'm also curious (and maybe a little afraid) of what theme Slasher came up with for Feb. (laugh)
I'm entering no matter the theme, so I can practice my pixel "art".

I played Fallen Hero last night and I really enjoyed it. I really like the teaming-up of Slasher and Cassiebg.

Well done.

I had it mostly working but then I messed around with the code and everything went to hell fast...

Out of time and patience so best of luck to all who survived this MAGS!

So far my project hasn't exploded, 1 day left though. It's heating up. 8-0

Mandle

I have to go out to lunch today with a friend but after that I will probably have another look at my code. Usually after I step away for a while the problem sticks out like a sore thumb and I can't believe I couldn't see it before.

Hopefully I can pull it together because it could be quite a fun, if simple, game.

Jack

I got a little ahead of schedule, but then spent hours today getting an intercept equation to work. I think I have it now.

If nothing comes up tomorrow, I should be able to finish it.

This download link or
this alternate download link if the first one doesn't work for you.

Sadly, I didn't manage to complete my game on time, the scope was too big. However, I thought to upload something for MAGS as a form of respect towards the competition. :=
(Even though it's a demo, it should still count as an entry, right?)

This is just the first dialogue part of the game that introduces the case (it's a detective game). I will finish the whole game later, either during this month or the next month.

Actually, having missed the deadline was probably a blessing in disguise for me this time around:

I realized today that I had wanted to expand the rather simple puzzle-based game that I didn't get working into something with a bit more meat on the bone.

And then I realized that I actually started work on the game last Saturday, which was February 3rd.

So then I realized that I can legally enter it in THIS month's MAGS.

And THEN a whole storyline and game that I can use the puzzle mechanic in came crashing into my head out of nowhere on my bicycle ride home from work (which is where I come up with most ideas)...

Long story short: I'm in for next month's MAGS!

DBoyWheeler

For some weird reason, the black creature in Gwen Darkly reminds me of the Mother/Queen Ing from Metroid Prime 2: Echoes.

Anyway, good luck with all the entrants.
