Hello everyone, I recently started composing music intended to be used in video games, and I'm just curious to see what you guys think of these tracks and what you think could be done better, or how they could be better suited to an AGS style game.

Hey, well done!! Your compositional skills are in a good way. I would have added a more clear bass line, but you counter melody is there to create parallel emotions. I will wait in the future to hear more pieces.
I should have listened to my mother---I should have practised.

How recently...?
They are all awesome!

All great!

The first has a nice repetiitive quality so quite good for unobtrusive BGM for something like a fantasy forest setting as the title suggests.

The second sounds to me like music for an epic battle scene.

The third, I can imagine an army of orcs marching towards a their next conquest: The heavy drum beats would be awe-inspiring matched with an animation of a rank of ogres in the ranks smashing hammers down on giant war drums they are carrying.

I'm not a specialist but here are some thoughts :

Forgotten Forest is my favourite. It's good at creating an eerie, laid-back atmosphere.
I don't know what you want to use it for specifically but I would suggest that you extend it if it's meant to be played repeatedly.
One way to prevent the waltz beat from becoming tedious could be to stop the pizzicato and let the strings take over for a while.

As stated by Jojo, you could use long bass notes in the two other songs to give them more weight and unite their different sections.

Keep up the good work :)

As some of the gents above said, your counterpoint is pretty impressive, but it would be nice to see some more of your bass skills. Also, on the third track the drums sound more like simple setpieces; they are way to subdued, they shouldn't carry the rhythm, they should all-out explode at one point.

I don't know if you've played Camp1, but that one makes use of those nice avantgarde Erik Satie pieces to create a quite unusual atmosphere, which brings to mind the desolation of Stalker or some other Tarkovsky flick. Maybe you can try implementing some unusual chords or some more exotic instruments: a sitar, a hurdy-gurdy, a hang instead of drums. That would create a unique sound, rather than simply making it sound like standard-fantasy-battle-stock-music-no-5. I would be really curious to hear the first song with something like a harpsichord and oriental instrument instead of the current arrangement (which I imagine should be easy to do in your music making software), or with some weird chords thrown into the mix. It would really make it memorable.

In any case, keep up the good work.

Thanks for the kind words guys! I believe I started kind of trying to figure out orchestral music toward the end of November or beginning of December, so yeah, pretty recently; but I've been playing guitar and bass in punk rock bands (which is so, so different) for years. I definitely agree that I need more percussion/drums and bass in these tracks, but I'm just so lost on percussion lol, it's definitely the hardest part for me. Will definitely have to check out Camp1!

Just wondering what program you used to create these.

AegisNinja

Actually used Reason as the DAW, and then a combination of the stuff that came with Reason and Spitfire Albion.

scottythedawg

you did a great job. Im so cheap I nearly swallowed my tongue when i saw the price of spitfire albion.

AegisNinja

Lol, I snagged both Albion and Reason on black friday, or I certainly wouldn't have been able to afford them. Both of them are worth the price in my opinion, but it's still a big investment even on sale.

It's been a while since I have had time to make music that wasn't for one of my bands, but this got done today.
