First of all, thank you to everyone who took part in this prediction league. It was great fun to host.
Thanks also to Khris, whose contribution to the spreadsheet four years ago still forms the bones of the spreadsheet used this time.
I hope you all enjoyed it, even though Haggis dominated from quite early on, I hope that you enjoyed some of the tussles going on further down the table.
Shortly I will upload the final adjusted table.

Now to the result. Of course.
Well done to HAGGIS. You are the winner of the tournament.
There is a little prize. I hereby present you with the AGS Prediction League World Cup courtesy of your closest rival, ManicMatt. Thanks Matt.

The beautiful game!
No, I don't mean Phantasmagoria.
I mean Soccer.

Football fever is nearly upon us and suddenly we're all armchair experts again.
That can only mean 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia is nearly upon us.

Predict the scores, win points, become a champion.

Make Your Predictions Here!

This year, we have a special predictions website. You only need to enter your forum name and predictions. That's also where you'll find all the rules and updates (via a twitter timeline).

I will be maintaining THIS SPREADSHEET and league table on a publicly viewable document. I won't always be able to update things straight away. But rest assured, if you submitted a valid prediction before the deadline, it will count, even if you can't see it reflected in the spreadsheets and updates straight away. It just means I'm probably asleep or at work.  I'm in the Japanese time-zone through this, so please bear with me.

I think that's all for now. Let me know if you have any Queries.

Good Luck and Happy Predicting!

Rules
Spoiler

Rules

(1a) Offiicially, predictions for the first round of 48 group stages games will be accepted right up until the first game (Russia vs. Saudi Arabia) kicks off at 16:00BST on June 14th.
(1b) To allow for late comers, the League will remain open to new participants until all teams have played one game (namely 18:00BST on June 19th). Of course, you may not submit a score for any games that have already been played.

(2a) Scoring will work like this for each game:
If you predict the correct RESULT you score ONE point (RESULT here means correctly predicting the winning team or correctly predicting a tie/draw).
If you predict the correct SCORE you score THREE points (SCORE here means correctly predicting the actual scoreline).
If you FAIL to make a correct prediction you score NIL points
NOTE: This year, unlike previous years, there are no point deductions for failing to submit a prediction. You simply won't be able to score.

(3a) During the knockout stages all points are DOUBLED (so TWO points for correct RESULT or SIX points for correct SCORE).
(3b) For the FINAL, all points will be TRIPLED (THREE for RESULT or NINE for SCORE). I hope this will add some excitement.
NOTE: This year there are no wildcards predictions.

(4a) Please submit your predictions using the online form provided (ags-prediction-league.000webhostapp.com) and provide your Forum Name. Your predictions will be emailed to a special email address.
(4b) Please submit all the predictions in one go for each stage of the competition. This will mean making all 48 group stage predictions in one sitting. But it will get dramitically easier in the knockout stages.
NOTE: Do not type any personal or private information into the text fields. Your AGS forum name and your predictions are the only things you will need to post. You will never be asked for any other information.

(5a) You may submit predictions for knockout stage games from the moment that all the games of the previous stage are completed (e.g. Once all the group stage games have been played you may submit predictions for the Last 16 round).
(5b) I will prompt for relevant predictions when the time comes.

(6) Once you have submitted a prediction for a game, it cannot be changed (unless you can convince me there is an extremely good reason for doing so).

(7) Only results after normal time count (90 mins + time added on). Goals scored during extra time or penalties will not be included. So, if you predicted a 1-1 draw and the game goes on to extra tme and finishes 2-1, you will still win the points provided the score at the regular full-time whistle was 1-1.

(8) I will be maintaining the spreadsheet and league table on a publicly viewable document. I will also keep the league table in this first post as updated as possible, though I won't always be able to update things straight away. But rest assured, if you submitted a valid prediction before the deadline, it will count, even if you can't see it reflected in the spreadsheet yet. It just means I'm probably asleep or at work. I'm in the Japanese time-zone through this, so please bear with me.

Thanks for the shows of hands so far. I've been slowly setting things up behind the scenes. I've made a php form that people can use to submit their guesses and sends me an email with all the predictions. Look at me, coding master.

Is that sentence different according to my system clock? If not, you might wanna add the timezone.

Thanks for checking it out. It does say at the top of that box ‘All times are in BST'. But I might add it again to that sentence just to make it clearer.

No no, it's not immediately obvious. My web design skills are about as basic as all my other skills, so any suggestions or feedback is welcome.

CaptainD

Stu do we have to submit all our predictions for each stage (currently the group stage) in one go, or can you do some now, and return later to do the others?

(I'm guessing from the design it's all in one go but thought it was worth checking.)

Stupot

All in one go would be preferable. It used to be that you could do them in drips and drabs but most people did them in one block anyway. It's easier for me because I have to transfer them manually to the spreadsheet in my free time.

It'll be a mission but it's just 5-10 minutes and you've got 4 weeks to think about it and make notes before submitting. After the group stage it will be dramatically easier.

CaptainD

Thanks for the clarification.

It is of course obligatory to read all your predictions out loud in the manner of an BBC sports reporter.

Hehe. I noticed that and it made me laugh. I thought maybe you were planning to submit the rest later (not in the rules but I wouldn't have minded) but I just took the ones you put in hide tags in your post above and entered them into the spreadsheet. :-)

We now have 10 players already (including me).

11 people in Eruo ‘16 (well 12 because Creamy came on as a sub for Tzachs who came off injured at half time) and 14 in World Cup ‘14. But 20 would be great.

That's odd. It's been pretty reliable from where I'm sitting (apart from on the set times where it's reliably unreliable). If you still can't get it to work after a couple more tries, it's okay to just copy and edit the numbers from someone's post above. You can put them here or pm them to me.

The whole php form thing is just my silly little project anyway. It doesn't really make things much quicker as I still have to manually input them into the spreadsheet. I've just started a new teacher training course. My AGS-related activities always go up when there is something else I should be concentrating on. Read an linguistics book or tweak some CSS? No brainer.

Yeah, it's pretty weird, it works neither on my phone nor my PC. I'll post my guesses here. However, I also don't have access to the rules, would be great if you could post them here (or PM me).

If you still can't get it to work after a couple more tries, it's okay to just copy and edit the numbers from someone's post above. You can put them here or pm them to me.
Yeah, it's pretty weird, it works neither on my phone nor my PC. I'll post my guesses here. However, I also don't have access to the rules, would be great if you could post them here (or PM me).
I've updated the first post to contain the rules in spoiler tags :-D

Cassiebsg

Wait! What? There are rules!!!!! 8-0
I thought we just randomly shot the ball around the teams and where ever the ball landed then we cast a prediction... damn! Need to revise my tactics... (laugh)

Stupot

Did anybody try submitting predictions a few hours ago?

I received 2 emails: one was full of 0-0 draws and the name given was “echo ‘WTF'” so I think they were maybe testing to see if they could insert php into the email or something, the second one was literally just the team names. They would have had to have done something in order to erase all the 0s that are in the boxes by default.

I think someone was having a little play around.

cat

Weirdly, it did work now :)

If Salah is indeed out for the next few weeks, I don't fancy Egypt's chances much.

Creamy

They still think he can recover.

I haven't followed soccer much lately. A great unknown is Iceland.

EDIT: I didn't know Guerrero's ban had been extended. Let's hope Peru can manage without him.

Stupot

Two weeks to go!

Also, I have a favour to ask. Would somebody be kind enough to volunteer to make a special signature trophy for the winner?

Last time I put out a similar request but had no takers, so I made one myself and it was rubbish.

Reply here or PM me if you're interested. Cheers.

Stupot

One week to go. Five more players would make it a nice round 20. If everyone who took part in the "show of hands" at the start of this thread signed up, we would have our 20.

Also , thanks to ManicMatt, we have a nice pixel-trophy for the winner.

CaptainD

Thanks ManicMatt for the trophy!
Thanks Stupot for hosting!

15 isn't a bad number but would be nice if we could get 5 more...

I'm not understanding the spreadsheet.  While I agree with CaptainD's scores, the points on the spreadsheet don't make any sense.  For Morocco vs. Iran Cassiebsg, cat, xBranex, and I all predicted 0-0.  Cassiebsg and cat got 0 right and 0 score, while xBranex got 1 right and 1 score, and I got 1 right but no score.  Er... what? :undecided:

Stupot

The 1 in the ‘score' and ‘result' column are just Boolean yes/no scores to tell it whether or not you got the correct result. A 1 in the R column is worth 2 points, which added to the 1 point from the S column gives you a total of 3 points for getting the correct result.

[edit] @Baron. Reading your post back again I realise that you must have started looking at the 2nd row when you came to Brane and yourself. Morocco v Iran is the 3rd row.

Baron

Stupot

Ahh. I get it.

You were misinterpreting the admittedly misleading layout . It goes NAME R S not R S NAME. I've drawn borders to separate the information properly.

Mines went bad too.

Great game from Spain and Portugal.

EDIT : Bravo Cat. I never thought I'd see Germany lose to Mexico.

Andail

I'm predictably bad at this. In my defense, several of the matches so far have had rather unexpected results. Ah well, we've just started.

Stupot

Day 4 goes to Cat, who was the only one to predict a Germany loss to Mexico. Well done 👍

@Andail Yeah, it's pretty much just luck at the moment. On one hand it makes things more exciting but on the other hand it takes something away from actually trying to think about each result.

Andail

Finally a full pot for me.

And my apologies for a boring second half by Sweden against South Korea.

CaptainD

Well done Cat!

Aw man I really need Belgium and England to win today just to keep me off the bottom of the table... (though thankfully Player 18, Player 19 and Player 20 seem unlikely to pick up any points :-D)

Stupot

Well done England! Well done ‘Arry Kane, my son (it's okay to call footballers your son, apparently).

hmm yeah. Damn. It seems you are. And so are a few other people. I'll need to wait until I can get on my laptop to work out where I've cocked up and make the changes without destroying the rest of the table.

Cheers for the heads up and apologies for the temporary glitch.

[update]I've worked out where the cock-up happened. Bad copypasting job. It's a bit fiddly to mend it on my phone but I'll sort it out tonight.

These are the standings at the halfway point of the tournament:

32/64 games played.

Haggis still dominating. But that could change easily. Remember that points are doubled in the knockout stages and tripled for the final.

This would be a good time to address:

What if the league finishes with a tie at the top?

There is a protocol which the table itself isn't set up to calculate automatically, so if the league does end up with two players on the same points, we may have to follow these steps.

If they have the same points, who has the most correct results
If they have the same number of correct results, who has the most correct scores (these could be different because of the double/triple points in later stages)
If the have the same number of correct scores, then the winner is the player who got s correct result FIRST. If that still happens to be equal then it's the first person to send a SWAT team to the other person's house.

CaptainD

I have to thank Bicilotti for manfully keeping me off the bottom of the table :-D

I just remembered that I adopted an approach of one team will always fail to score, so almost all my predictions are 1-0, 2-0, 3-0 etc (no draws). Japan Colombia was one of the exceptions... no idea why... but as lucky as Kane's third vs Panama.

@Creamy - Are you gonna be gone for the rest of the tournament or just this coming round? If you PM me for the fixtures we already know I'll put them in for you :-)

Cassiebsg

Creamy, you can always bet on the 1st - 2nd... kind of blind betting... (laugh)

Speaking of that, when can we start betting on the next round?
Maybe you could open voting for the certain ones, and open voting at the "end of the day" when we have the next 2 teams that'll play against each other?
There are those who believe that life here began out there...

Stupot

Theoretically the window for the next round is open when the previous round is concluded and we know all the fixtures.

In reality the might be some waiting time while I sort out the website and open up the link to the new prediction page.

Today that wait will be like 10 minutes because I'm up until 5am, watching the football. For other rounds, it might take a few hours. But there's always a day or two break between rounds, so you have plenty of time. Just keep checking the link.

Cassiebsg

Okay, just post when it's open. I have no idea when the rounds end... I just know Portugal will play the 30th next and that's not many days left... (roll)

And congrats to Selmiak for being the high scorer for the round of 16.

11 points separates 1st and 2nd place. Interestingly, 11 points also covers the bottom 13 places.

See you in the quarters.

Baron

Well, the tie strategy worked pretty well for me last round, so I'm keeping it up:

Uruguay 2 - 2 France
Brazil 2 - 2 Belgium
Sweden 1 - 1 England
Russia 2 - 2 Croatia

Originally I had all 2-2 ties, but Sweden is just so defensive I couldn't bring myself to do it.

CaptainD

Hmm.... tricky.

Uruguay 1 - 1 France    Really tough to predict, France have got goals in them but their defence can clearly be got at, Uruguay rock solid defence with Suarez and Cavani up front... can see this being edgy though.
Brazil 2 - 0 Belgium    Great fight back by Belgium the other day but think Brazil will just have too much for them.
Sweden 1 - 2 England    Bit if a blind guess really.  Know nothing about Sweden other than that they don't have Ibrahimavic any longer.  England actually look a decent team atm.  Think Harry Kane will score all three (or at least claim them all).
Russia 1 - 0 Croatia    Although Croatia are the team I hope win it, I can see home advantage just about pushing this in Russia's favour.

Stupot

Someone has sent me some predictions but didn't fill in the ‘name' field.

Technically, due to the reasons mentioned in an earlier post, you are technically third and Matt is 2nd. That's because in the event of a tie the number of correct scores determines the position. I couldn't get the table to work this out automatically, though.

Well well well. It ain't over yet, folks.

Sinsin, xBRANEx and ManicMatt all got 14/24 points in the quarter-finals.

This puts Matt but one mere point behind our perennial leader, Haggis. Could there be an upset yet?

Also, the semi final prediction window is now open. Don't miss out. And don't forget to include your name.

Yes but the site says TBC vs TBC, let me know when that's known!

give me time. I'm in a different time zone and work on Sunday's.

Also, there seems to be a problem with the PHP script for that page. I'm gonna didabkevthe link until I can sort it out when I get home.

Stupot

Okay. The site is working again now. If you have already tried to enter your semi-final predictions you will need to try again because I won't have got the emails. Either that or just post them here.

Cassiebsg

again, didn't vote for those I think might win, but those I wish would win... meaning it'll probably be the exact opposite of my "prediction". (roll)

I really don't have a clue, this World Cup has been absolutely crazy.  I'm going for a draw in normal time in both games.

Mbappé - what an a**hole.

Good match nonetheless and lucky victory for France with a little help from the referee.

Stupot

Sinitrena wins the semi-finals with 8 points. Well done to you.

The prediction windows for the 3rd place play off and for the final game are now open.

Remember points for the World Cup Final are tripled so there are still 15 points total to play for.
It's up to you if you want to share your guesses here, but I will be leaving the spreadsheet blank until all predictions are in.

Cassiebsg

Oh, any reason why they're not on one page? Uhm... hope I remembered to add my nick second time around... :-[

I've backed Croatia as dark horses since the tournament began so would like to think they can seal the deal.
I think Belgium have far too much individual skill for England, although as always, it depends which version of both sides shows up.  The 3rd place match always feels rather pointless to most viewers, I wonder if the players feel the same?

My (almost definitely wrong) predictions:

Belgium 2 - 0 England
France 1 - 2 Croatia

Stupot

@Cassie. They're on seperate pages because the deadlines are different. So some people might still want to submit their final prediction after I've disabled the link to the 3rd place page.

Not everyone has put in their guesses for the final. If you have already, thanks for that. Otherwise, you have until 4pm UK time... but remember the site is closed 2-3 pm.

Remember there are 9 points to be had, so while the tournament may be pretty much over, you still have a chance to gain a few positions against your closest rivals.

Good luck tonight everyone. And thanks for being part of this game.

Stupot

ManicMatt

Congratulations Haggis! I won't be offended if you don't put the cup in your sig, heh. But thinking about it, I'm glad I didn't win, to be giving my own cup to myself!

The fact I got to second place shows how unpredictable the football was, I think?

Stupot

Here's the final table adjusted to account for criteria I couldn't implement automatically.

CaptainD

Belgium's 2-0 win over England pushed me up to 7th - not too unhappy with that considering I spent most of the group stages in 16th place!

Thanks Stu for hosting this ;-D

Baron

Woot!  4th place! ;-D  My most inspiring moves were blindly carpet-bombing the prediction forms with statistically probable scores and actually showing up to make predictions before deadlines. ;)  Congratulations to Haggis and thanks to Stupot and all the participants for a fun activity.

Cassiebsg

Thanks Stupot for hosting this wreck! (laugh)
Was fun while it lasted. :-D

Haggis

Wow! If only some of my luck could have rubbed off on England in that semi final... ah well, back to being Scottish again.
Thanks Stupot for hosting, great fun as always, looking forward to 2020 already! Congrats to all who took part, you're all fair play winners.
And YES I'll be using this trophy in my sig! Cest Mbappeifique!

cat

Wow, I'm really terrible at that. I'm glad I didn't bet for money :P
