Description:
Even though I don't think it's much unknown, these days, where I come from (Naples, Italy) there is a custom: when you order an espresso, you can decide to pay for an additional one so to leave it paid in advance for someone who may not be able to afford it. It's called "caffè sospeso" (translated as "pending coffee") and it basically is an anonymous act of kindness.

For this month's MAGS I'd love to see entries including some little-known traditions or customs from your birthplace, culture, religion, folklore or whatever else you think would be nice to share.
Your entry doesn't have to be built around it, but you can do it if you so wish!

We AGSers come from all over the world, and I thought it could be a nice way to share and explain little - maybe otherwise inexplicable - bits of culture!

If you can, point out - either here in the thread or in the game, if you find a clever way to do so - which tradition\custom you have included!

What is MAGS?

Started in 2001, MAGS is a competition for amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favourite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.

Rules

Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualise your game following the month's criteria (see above). Second, create your game fuelled only by coffee. Finally, post your game in this thread, including:

* A working download link
* The title of your game
* A suitable in-game screenshot

At the end of the month, voting will begin, usually lasting for fourteen days and the winner chooses the next month's theme.

HandsFree

Nice theme.
It's been a while since I did scripting for an AGS game and I like to stay in practice a bit. :)
So if anyone likes to focus on other things, maybe we can join efforts?

Thanks

I'm having trouble thinking of any kind of traditions here. I'm sure there are some that I'm not aware of.
The closest I can think to anything is stuff during the time I lived in Oklahoma, maybe 3 hours or so from where I live. Here, the lottery is legal and there are even vending machines that sell lottery tickets, but no casinos. But Oklahoma has(or at least had) casinos and no lottery and you couldn't even legally get a tattoo. So I heard about people coming all the way here to get a tattoo. And also some people would come to Texas to buy alcohol because the alcohol content was higher.
And since moving back to Texas I've seen lots of commercials for the casino about 30 miles from where I lived in Oklahoma even though I don't remember seeing a single one before I moved there.
Maybe I can come up with something based on that stuff. Or maybe I can think of something that common here, but not in other places...

Oh, right. I forgot one truly unique thing here since it's mostly just a tourist thing. The 72 oz steak at The Big Texan. But I'm not sure if that counts as little known since it's been mentioned on multiple tv shows.

Actually this is interesting in the same way it was interesting to read Tom Waits say that St. Louis is the place where the most people wear red pants - although this one may be an entirely made up assumption.
It is nothing majestic, but it's indeed unknown and peculiar (if it were true) (laugh).

That said, though, the "tradition" or "custom" doesn't have to be "spectacular". Also, definitely can move away from your birthplace and be part of something you feel you belong to: a religion, a video game "club", an actual club, a workplace. I suppose the "mandatory" thing here is that it's something you think it's worth sharing :)

Another example comes to mind, although I can't guarantee it's "unique" at all.

Here in Italy, whether they are superstitious or not, it is customary to say "merda" (=shit) to live performers, instead of the more traditional and polite "good luck"\"break a leg" alternative.
Most theater companies I met\worked with (amateur ones at least), have this "ritual" where, right before going on stage, they all gather in a circle putting a hand on top of each other's, then shout "MERDA!" out loud (laugh)

This is because back in the day when people used horse-driven chariots, to see a lot of horse poop outside of a theater meant that a lot of people came to see the performance!

EDIT: Yet another example! This has been told me some time ago by a friend of mine, and may just be his own experience.

In a place in Sicily, Saponara, there is a religious procession - "Quadrittu" (="little painting", in Sicilian dialect) - where the devotees follow the image of the Virgin Mary carrying long, lit torches/candles held up against it.
The peculiar thing, according to what my friend told me, is that often the devotees wear no gloves or similar protection so, when the wax melts and drips all over their hands, alongside all the prayers apparently there are often people who engage in blasphemy by cursing (laugh).

Searching a bit, it seems that this procession comes from a time where charcoal burners were not able to take part to a specific religious event, because of their job being out of the city walls and their employers won't allow them to. Apparently one night, in the XVII century, these charcoal burners came down the mountains (carrying long torches), entered the church, and decided to take the image to celebrate their own way.

There could be some kind of tradition in my area, Texas in general, or even the general US south that might seem interesting to others, but is mundane to me. Or something that's part of different culture.
But I think the best I can come up with is the tradition of some tourists going to stuff like the Big Texan and the Cadillac Ranch.
So, wish me luck as I'm going to attempt to make a game using a scavenger hunt similar to one I did as a teenager, but with tourist attractions and such.

I have sth in mind, I hope I'll have enough time

This is done in Spain too! ("Mucha mierda")  ;-D

I can't make anything this month, but I really hope someone try their take on the Gävle goat!

For those unfamiliar with it, the Swedish town of Gävle has a decades-old tradition of building a giant hay goat to decorate the town square during Christmas.
Not officially part of the tradition is a random arsonist trying to burn the goat down every winter, with varying success...

That definitely sounds more fun than my ideas.
But I'd be afraid of making a game based on something I know absolutely nothing about.

Don't be, if thousands of game developers manage to make great games about elves, aliens, zombies or tons of other things that literally doesn't exist,
I'm sure you can make an awesome MAGS entry of a well-documented tradition (plus I linked to a full Wikipedia article on it in my previous comment!)!  ;)

Well, this certainly is another awesome theme :)

I feel like it should be possible to make a game about cheese rolling...

Ha! That's great :D I think it may also be because Naples had a Spanish domination in 16th-17th century (also a reason why the dialect contains also Spanish words)!

I agree with what Blondbraid said :) (Thanks for sharing Blondbraid!)

Also, one of the "hidden" purposes of this MAGS is to learn more about the world and the people who live in it so, even if you ended up using something that doesn't actually belong to you or your culture, you still would have learned something (and the same goes for us, when playing).

If it is cheese that needs to roll, then so be it! (laugh)

Back in the 90s when i was stationed in OKC, I remember being less than thrilled with Okie beer. Only slightly more alcohol content than tap water as I recall.

I do miss Braum's though. Damn, that was the best ice cream!

Also, really interesting theme this month. I'd say I'm trying to make a game, but that always seems to jinx things for me.

But that's easier. Those things don't have any set rules, just guidelines at best.
But I'll look further into it. I did find a few Youtube videos.
It would certainly be easier than my idea since it would only need 1-4 backgrounds.

Can't say I've ever found Braum's ice cream any better than Blue Bunny or other brands available around here, but I guess it could also depend on the flavor. Their soft serve frozen yogurt on the other hand is definitely the best I've had.

I suppose that's why there are people who make their game in secret, not to be mentioned until it's complete.

The first time I heard about it, I thought it was a joke.

There are suspended fries near my place. I only discovered it recently.

Another one : the Ma'nene ritual of cleaning corpses in Indonesia.

Now I'm kind of interested in what was said...

Hopefully someone is making the Cheese Rolling game.

I am going forward with the Gävle goat game, though the programming is probably going to end up more complex than my original game. I almost have the sprite style figured out and I started a character creation GUI a couple of days ago. And I have a crude version of the goat itself. I'm not sure what genre the game will fall into. Probably some kind of hybrid.

And we're halfway through the month!
Coincidentally it's also a "Screenshot Saturday", one of those online weekly events that all the cool kids participate in!

If any of you has something to show, this is a perfect time! Boost our morale! Help us fight the H E A T!
