ANOTHER WORLD

Inspiration from the namesake game

Make a background set in another world. It could be a world with strange lifeforms, a scenery of alien structures, anything goes as long it gives a vibe of belonging to a different world.
I posted a few screen from Another World because that game is a reminder that even with few colors and details it's possible to convey a great atmosphere, but there are no constraints for the challenge.

Deadline: 24th of November 2019

Voting:

Concept: your background should tell us something about the place you have depicted.
Playability: does it have clearly defined walkable areas, things to interact with, etc?
Artistic Execution: does the image convey the wanted atmosphere? What's the feeling of the place?

Have fun!

Kastchey

Awesome! I'm a sucker for otherworldly sceneries.
I don't know if I'll have the time to make an entry but I will definitely try.

VampireWombat

Hmm. I'll see what I can do. I might even try something with my "new" laptop.

lorenzo

I love both the game (Another World) and the theme! Hopefully, I'll be able to make an entry.

Here's a quick entry:

(Using the spoiler thing to prevent it from lagging others' connections.)

Spoiler

A weird sky in some strange barren land--the ground probably illuminated by a light close to the foreground.  And maybe random items or NPCs would appear at rightly-timed moments in the game.  Like first time around, you meet with someone who gives you information, and later when you return here, there's a discarded item needed to solve a puzzle.  And maybe sometimes you'll see a funny Easter egg on the top of one of the distant mountains.  Oh, the possibilities!

Reiter

Here is mine. A tricky matter, certainly, but not a subject that I could abandon.

It became a rather peculiar worldlet, but I would like a brief visit. I think that I shall draw the rest of the barge some day, too.

Okay, I just stop with the touchups now.
This turned out weirder than intended, but here we go: 16 colors, all taken from the C64 palette.

Definately lots to explore here ;)

--edit:
In the meantime I converted the image so that real C64 could display it too  8-)

How's it going, does anyone need more time to finish their pieces?

lorenzo

I'm working on my entry right now! I started a bit late, unfortunately, but I hope I can finish it today.

My entry:

Jack

The whole competition I had in mind to do a Dyson sphere, but it makes everything a lot harder and creates boring shadows, so I made this instead:

Thanks for all the entries guys, I'll close the challenge tomorrow morning (approx. 12 hours from now), unless anyone asks for an extension.

- Alan

Kastchey

I would appreciate an extension if you are so kind to offer. I didn't get a chance to work on anything yet, but the theme is amazing so I'd love to get at least a quick entry in.

Ok, then. I'm adding three more days.

Neil Dnuma

This was harder than I remembered!

Awesome, thanks!

Lovely entries everyone. And a couple really stunning ones - more detailed comments incoming!

Edit:
Here's mine. Not quite what I had pictured in my mind but anyway, here goes:

Concept: Jack (The story here is obvious... Some humans are exploring a distant planet(oid))
Playability: Abstruder (I can tell immediately where my character can go. Also kickass graphics for c64)
Artistic Execution: Lorenzo (Beautifully composed. Belongs in a museum! (or art gallery))
