The end result looks great - but am I right in thinking it's just a matter of using nodes to shrink and then scale back up without smoothing?

Almost. Seems to also be a good idea to reduce  the number of colors, plus a pixelate node in the middle of the scaling.
There are those who believe that life here began out there...

I *think* that the pixelate node just prevents the subsequent scaling node from using smooth scaling.
