Note on Mac client:
Because the Mac build was made without an Apple developer license, you may get a security alert when you try to run it, and it may refuse to run. In order to get around this, instead of double-clicking the file, right-click (Ctrl-click) and choose "Open" from the menu.

Note on Linux client:
The client is built with AGS 3.4.3, which has a dependency on libpng12.so.0. See the GitHub issue tracker for fix. (Edit: The download has now been repackaged with the library included.)

How do the AGS Awards work?
(This is information mostly for new members, same procedure as every year)

Spoiler
Every year, the AGS community embarks on a quest to find the best games made in the last year. All games are eligible, that were added to the AGS Database in the year 2019. There is a For Your Consideration thread where authors can promote their games and players get a good overview what might be worth playing.

The awards are a two-step process: First there is a nomination phase where all community members can nominate the eligible games in several categories (it will be the same categories as last year). The top five games of each category make it to the voting (as long as they've received at least five nominations). Again, all members of the community can vote on their favourite games.
The final result is then announced in a live ceremony that can be joined either with a special client or any regular irc client.

Party like it's 1990 in this thread!

cat

Reminder:

Have you already played the games made last year? You can start playing them right away, no need to wait for nominations to start!

Don't forget to add your games to the For your Consideration thread! Do it better now before nominations start!

Everyone is welcome to participate in the Awards!

And if you have any questions: this here is the place to ask  :)

Kastchey

Something to keep in mind for when the nomination phase opens: there is no requirement to have played all games in order to nominate. Sure it would be great if you gave all or most of them a go, but if you only have time to play a few and, say, are really impressed with the music in one of them or the writing in another, it's fine to nominate them in their respective categories! So do not get discouraged if you only have so much time to play, because every single vote counts.

cat

Kastchey is right: You don't have to play all games to nominate. Every vote counts, so start playing!

Nominations will start next week. Developers, don't forget to add your games to the "For your consideration" tread!

As you will have probably noticed from the big red banner on top of the page

Nominations have started!

Use the link in the the forum banner to select the games you deem worthy in each category.

Please let us know if you encounter any problems with the nomination page.

Nominations will close at 23:59 GMT on Thursday 20 February 2020.

Remember, you don't have to play all games to nominate. If you have played a game and liked the puzzles, nominate it! Just make sure that you nominate the games you have played in the appropriate categories and not go fanboy all over for a single game.
If you are not sure which games to play and what categories to nominate, check out the For Your Consideration thread.

lorenzo

In the nomination page the category "Best Puzzles" is listed two times.

Oops - thanks for pointing that out!

Edit: Should be fixed now, thanks AGA!

Stupot

In the red banner there's a slight syntax error.

“ please take the time to nomination”

KyriakosCH

So, any estimate on when the voting will begin? (and for how long it will last) I have to travel between two cities for periods of time so it would be good to know.

Though now there is a massive font announcement about nomination lasting a month??? That may be a bit overkill  ;)
This is the Way - A dark allegory. My Twitter!  My Youtube!

Cassiebsg

It's not overkill, it's meant to give you time to play some games and refresh your memory about games you might have played during the year.
And nominating is a huge task, just looking at that huge endless page with lists of games you have barely heard of or remember can be scary. It does make me feel like I want to give up even before I started.  :-\ So being able to go thru the list at your own pace and being able to change your mind later on, makes the task seem more doable.
There are those who believe that life here began out there...

Stupot

I imagine the voting will begin almost as soon as the nomination phase ends on Feb 20.

Overkill? Considering that last year we had to extend nomination period because people needed more time, I don't think it's overkill. You also haven't nominated yet, but I hope you will find some time to do so within this long timespan.

There's so many options, I feel completely overwhelmed.

And you're dead right in this, too:

This year, we have a whooping 78 games to evaluate. If we try to play all of them and only use one hour on average for each and can dedicate on average four hours to the task each day in the evenings after work, then this will take around 20 evenings. And then we'll have to make up our minds about what to nominate in 15 categories. If there are only some games among them where the puzzles are any good, then “twenty evenings plus” will be a very conservative estimate.

Let's face it: This really is objectively overwhelming. We've bitten off much more than we can realistically chew. The more so if we want to do this conscientiously.

Perhaps we've staved off to much work to the end of the year? Perhaps we can learn something from the crowd over at the Maggies awards: They only need to make up their minds aboud 12 adventures. And the reason is that only the monthly winners are in the race.

So for the AGS Awards of next year, I'd like to suggest  something similar as the Maggies crowd does:

Let's do Quarterly Nominations in April, July, October, and January about the games of the preceding quarter. For each category, anybody can nominate any game(s) that has been entered in the Games database in that quarter. Everyone gets one ballot, and on that ballot, they may nominate as many games as they like per category. The nomination votes are counted, and the games with the highest three votes are nominated for the AGS Award of the respective category of the whole year.

So when February rolls around, the nominations are in and the field has been narrowed to just twelve games in each category.  Additionally there's bound to be some overlap, some games are bound to be nominated for several categories -- so in effect, the overall number of the games that we need to vote on will become manageable. We will then do our usual procedures, starting with the phase after the nomination phase and ending with the grand award ceremony.

  • Advantage: The "mountain of work" at the end of the year is decimated.
  • Disadvantage: If at least _four_ hot contenders for some category are released in the same quarter, then some of them will drop through the cracks.
  • Disadvantage: More work throughout the years, might feel like “eternal nomination time“.

What do you think?

Cassiebsg

Or we can just play them as they are released, and take notes for nominations in a text file.   (laugh)
There are those who believe that life here began out there...

Kastchey

You really don't have to play them all to nominate, and you don't have to wait until you have played all you can to start nominating. The way I do it is I start off nominating the games I have played throughout the year in whatever category I think they excel. Then I start going through the remaining titles and edit my nominee list if I play something I feel is worth nominating. I review my nominee list if I run out of space (I don't think that has ever happened) or if I'm done playing everything. You can treat your nominee list as a WiP and edit as many times as you want. I know it's still not ideal, but easier if done piece by piece.

In case it helps someone, here is a sheet with all the titles from this year and their links to the DB. I was also marking non-adventures, demos and commercial games as I was going through the list (might not be 100% accurate). I have my own non-public copy where I mark what I have already played.

@fernewelten: I think ideas how to increase participation and making nomination easier are more than welcome. I'm happy to discuss organisation of future awards in a separate thread, to keep things organised. Feel free to create such a thread (or maybe there is already a similar old one with other ideas that you can dig up).

For now, we have the awards as they are. But how to tackle the large amount of games?

Here are a few options:

  • Play the games as soon as they come out and takes notes, as Cassiebsg suggested. This is IMHO the best option.
  • Play the games promoted in the For your consideration thread. Here the games are nicely presented and you can easily choose the ones that appeal to you.
  • Watch let's plays of the games on Youtube. This is also a valid option if you can't or don't want to buy a commercial game.
  • Play only a part of some games. You can probably judge the quality of sprites and background as well as voice acting within the first 10 minutes of playing.
  • Only play games you are interested in. No interest in demos or non-adventure games? Don't play them and focus on other things.
  • Absolutely no time to play games? Just think about the games you have played during last year and only nominate them in appropriate categories.

Remember, nominating does not mean that you have to play all games. Nominating a game for a certain category does not mean you think it is superior to all other games, it just means that the game is very good at a certain aspect.

Cassiebsg

I got inspired by Kastchey's list, and made my own... and learned in the process how to steal import images from the internet to Excel.  :-D
I like visual aids when I'm trying to remember "what was that game again?" while nominating. So hope this list can help somehow. Like Kastchey's list it doesn't include all info, but I tried to get all commercial, demos and non-adventure, MAGS and voice (that I knew off). Was going to add short but only some very few have been marked as short.

If your game is in here and you wish me to add some relevant info to the tables, just say so (please PM) and I'll add it.

Kastchey and Cassiebsg: thanks for the spreadsheets! They're really useful.

Cassiebsg

Np
I just did a few changes to it right now: Added link to the game's page; sorted the categories out so it's easier to see and sort and added extra columns with all the awards categories. Feel free to use these as you see fit. I'm thinking about using it to rank the game in the different categories... like 1 to 5 where 5 is best. But use whatever feels right for you.
Download it and make it your own. You only need the first sheet, the others I used to gather the info.

Think I'll start one for this years's games, so I can take notes already and have half the work done next year.  (nod)
There are those who believe that life here began out there...

Kastchey

Nice updates Cassie. Colour coding with more categories is a nice idea. I think I will stick to my lightweight version but yours certainly has a lot of appeal, especially to someone who hasn't started playing yet and wants an overview of the entire year's base with screenshots.

Maybe you could also add a link to 'For your consideration' thread for whichever game is advertised there?

lorenzo, glad to hear the spreadsheets are useful. Whatever works right?

Cassiebsg

QuoteMaybe you could also add a link to 'For your consideration' thread for whichever game is advertised there?

Done. Though this is a copy/paste manual work, so in a way I'm happy that the thread isn't that big.  (roll)

I've also noticed that the links to the game page where messed up, so I've fixed them.

cat

It's February already - how are you getting along with nominating?

Kastchey

I'm through most of the free games, I now only need to see how many of the commercial ones I'll be able to buy (there's quite a number of them this year!).

Cassiebsg

Remember you can always watch some YT let's play of the commercial ones, if you can't afford to buy.

cat

Thanks for the kind offer, ManicMatt!

Just a reminder how nominations work:

For each category, the 5 games which have most votes, will be nominated. However, each game has to have at least 5 votes, otherwise it will not count as valid nominee.
So far, we have only two categories where we have at least 5 games with sufficient votes. In some categories it's only one or two or even none at all.

Remember: You can nominate up to 10 games in each category!
If we do not manage to get enough nominees in most of the categories this year, I will probably not run the awards next year.

Privateer Puddin'

Started to update my nominations (so it's not just for my games  :=, but still got lots to do! Weekend up of playing AGS games me thinks.

Also, tweeted about it: https://twitter.com/tomakasatnav/status/1225730414817361920

Cassiebsg

Remember that there are let's play videos for most (if not all) commercial games and some of the free ones on YT. Even if all you find is a trailer or you only watch a couple minutes of each video, it might help when having to decide if a game is worth nominating in that category or comparing it with another one.

I spendt 2 hours on it yesterday and only updated some of the categories.
And then I realized I overlooked a great game, and have to decide now who to bump out of some categories.  :-[

Not too bad, but the more nominations the better the result represents the community.
We could certainly need a few more votes for best character. If you don't remember the exact name, don't worry. AGA takes care of that so "Guybrush", "Threepwood" and "Guybrush Threepwood" all count for the same character  ;)

Btw, please remember not to fan-vote in all categories for each game. Think about each game's individual merits.

Congratulations to all nominees!

Thanks to everyone who took the time to play the games and nominate!

Sadly, I have to say that we had some attempts of cheating during nomination phase. There were people nominating only one single game in all categories. There were also some accounts created just for voting and nominating only one game (or giving alibi votes in categories that didn't apply for that game). I know who you are and I want to point out that this is a behaviour that is not appreciated.

I hope that during voting there will not be such problems.

Thanyx

Hi Cat!

Thanks for the update. I confess that I voted for only one game, simply because, unfortunately, I wasn't able to play any AGS game last year due to my time schedule. Had no idea it was considered cheating.

If so, then please delete my vote, because I definitely don't want to be a cheater. Thank you.

Maybe my wording was unclear. I consider cheating if you create just an account to vote for one single game or if you encourage other people to do so. That's why we have removed those votes.
There was no rule against voting for your game or voting for only one game, so those votes stay as they are. Next year, we might be more clear about this or define additional rules.

Besides that, I'd rather stop talking about this subject for now and focus on the nominees. Voting will start in the next few days, but you can start playing the nominated games right away, if you haven't done so.

I knew I wouldn't get nominated for anything, and not because my game might be inferior, but because it's not been played by that many people! Although in many of those categories like background art I would be surprised if I beat any of those! My music however is pretty damn good, but again how many of you heard it..

Hopefully Boiled-Hard might fare better next year?

Yeah, that's always going to be a problem, but there are things you can do about it. For example, if the FYC entry for the game had emphasized the music as a strong point (not just listed it as one of a dizen suggested categories) and included an embedded YouTube video from or a Soundcloud link to the soundtrack, I might very well have given it a listen and maybe nominated it.

Yeah, that's always going to be a problem

Let's try and come up with ideas to make the nomination process itself less onerous for the participants.

  • Good games getting “buried” under a glut and not being played,
  • games getting a head start purely by chance just because they happen to have been put into the limelight when others might equally well have been, or just because they happen to have been published near the end of the year
  • an overflowing FYC thread that is in itself a big burden to work through,
  • well-meaning and committed regulars striking sail and not nominating at all,
  • lots of voters for just one game each
these are all symptoms of the fact that by now, more AGS games are produced within a year than can be reasonably evaluated within a month or so.

@cat has kindly put my own idea for that its own thread (see preceding link). I don't want to claim that this is the best possible way to go: It was meant as a basis for discussion in order to come up with better ideas.

But we really ought to do something about this. It is bound to become worse year by year. What is barely tenable now will become quite untenable very shortly.

(I suggest discussing this there (see preceding link) rather than here to keep this thread tidy.)

cat

Not being nominated does not mean your game was bad, just that people think others were better, at least in certain aspects.

While I am very happy that Mr Bear was nominated as Best Non-Adventure Game (admittedly a category where not that many games are eligible), another game I worked on was not nominated at all. While I think that the game is quite good, I fully understand that the other games were better and deserve being nominated.

BarbWire

Congrats to all nominees. I was thrilled to see that Tales of Jayvin appeared in several categories.
Well done Vincent for being rewarded for your excellent programming skills. I was, however, disappointed
that Retrojay got no mention for his artistic talent. The unbelievable amount of fantastic drawings he
produced for the game should have received some recognition. There is so much to the game that I doubt
most people got to see half of what it contains.

Jojo_the_monkey

Congratulations to all the nominees!! I was lucky enough to test some of the great adventures on the list. Many adventures was also on my radar to play, before the nomination. Congratulations to their teams and their hard work.
Good luck!!
I should have listened to my mother---I should have practised.

Congrats to all nominees, it's such a pleasure to see that both of the games which I have worked on have been nominated in several categories, thank you all very much. On the other side, I do agree with BarbWire, even though all of this is still rewarding. I'd like to special thanks all the people which I have worked with over the years because you are truly wonderful people, thanks for giving me the chance to work with you.

Danvzare

I'm surprised someone here made dummy accounts to cheat the votes.
I had no idea we had a big enough community for someone to even consider that.
It's almost flattering.  :-D

But I digress. Congrats to the nominees.
Also, how did AGS Awards Ceremony 2018 get nominated?  ???
Either I've misinterpreted what that is, or we've just been trolled.

The 2018 Awards Ceremony is the ceremony for games released in 2018, i.e. last year's ceremony (held in March 2019, IIRC). Thanks for the nominations, BTW!  ;-D

Cassiebsg

Well, it's been added to the DB in 2019 and it's a non-adventure "game"... So it fit in the nominations. Glad I wasn't the only one that thought it was worth nominating.  (laugh)

Stupot

Last year’s ceremony was a fantastic show. For many reasons :-D

cat

I agree. The show act done by Kastchey and LostTrainDude was quite impressive, to name only one highlight.

cat

How is everyone getting along with voting?

Cassiebsg

Haven't started, but there's still 12 days to go, so I should be able to meet the deadline.  (laugh)

Someone told me you met more difficult deadlines before  :-D

One week to go! Have you played all the games already?

While we could still need a few votes for the awards, there is also a Doodle poll now for the date and time of the awards ceremony.

Please let us know if and when you can attend. This also helps me to find possible presenters for the awards.

Voted! Definitely an excellent year for the AGS engine and community. Had lots of fun playing all these lovely games!

LimpingFish

I've played a shockingly low number of AGS games this year (especially freeware titles), but I voted in the categories that happened to have a few titles I had played. I'll try to play some more of the noms before the deadline and update my votes.

Either way, good luck to all the nominees!

Are the AGS Awards being cancelled due to the coronavirus?

cat

Hi folks!

Voting is over. Thanks to everyone who played the games and voted!

The ceremony will be held on 4.4.2020 at 18:00 forum time

Snarky and Kastchey are already preparing the awards client with new resources and disinfecting every single piece to make it 100% Corona free.
We hope to also provide a Linux and Mac build, but worse case you can also join via any IRC client (though missing out on great graphics).

In the meantime, if you get bored in your quarantine, you can already start playing the games that were released this year, to be prepared for next year's nominations  ;)

On the contrary, we're working with the WHO to turn the awards client into the sole official way to host all public gatherings, including concerts and music festivals, birthday parties, May parades, election primaries and caucuses, club nights, airport queues and mass protests. This is our time!

Edit: Oops, didn't mean to push the thread onto a new page with this silliness. Important stuff from cat:

I hope so. In any case, the ceremony will happen 17:00 UTC (unless I mixed this up completely now, time zones are confusing)

Laura Hunt

A newbie question: how does attending the ceremony work? Do we have to supply an avatar ahead of time, or upload it to the client when it goes live? I have no idea how this goes so if there are instructions anywhere, I would love to check them out :)

cat

There are plenty of avatars available in the client where you can choose from on login. I don't know if submissions are still accepted.

Snarky

Good question!  ;-D

The client comes with a whole bunch of avatars (game characters) provided to choose from â€" we just passed 160. Most of them are available for anybody to use, but it's also possible to have them password-protected so that only certain people get to use them. (Though I try to discourage this for all except the nomineesâ€"it's a lot of work just to give one participant a special costume.)

If you want a particular character added, you would have to submit it ahead of time, and also fill in a form that specifies how you want it used and the copyright that should apply. However, this year I'm not accepting avatar submissions except from the games that are nominated, simply because I don't have a lot of spare time to work on the client and there's a lot of other stuff that needs to be done. Hopefully next year!

To check it out ahead of time, you can download last year's client and test: you should be able to get into the audience hall and walk around (probably on stage, as the first person to log on automatically becomes a presenter), though there'll be nothing happening. But you can familiarize yourself with the UI, how you change avatars, etc.

Snarky

I should specify that in order to join the actual ceremony you will need this year's client (which is still under development)â€"the one from last year won't work.

You can now download the client for the AGS Awards ceremony:

v5.0.40

Windows (.zip) â€" 253 MB [mirror]
MacOS (.zip) â€" 261 MB [mirror]
Linux (.tar.gz) â€" 261 MB [mirror]

Note on Mac client:
Because the Mac build was made without an Apple developer license, you may get a security alert when you try to run it, and it may refuse to run. In order to get around this, instead of double-clicking the file, right-click (Ctrl-click) and choose "Open" from the menu.

Note on Linux client:
The client is built with AGS 3.4.3, which has a dependency on libpng12.so.0. See the GitHub issue tracker for fix. (Edit: The download has now been repackaged with the library included.)

As before, the Mac and Linux versions do not have clipboard support (copy-paste from outside the app).

Cassiebsg

Thank you! :D

Downloading and will test it right away. Will have a test run this year? Or we just hope all works fine?  ;)

Awesome, please do that. Thank you so much!

Once again, a guide to using the awards client:

Basic Use
You chat by typing and walk around by left-clicking. However, because the IRC channel we use to communicate these actions has limited bandwidth, walking is throttled â€" after you click to walk, it is disabled for a short periodâ€"notice that the cursor is grayed out. Just wait a second and you'll be able to click again.

You can also turn to face different directions by right-clicking:

[imgzoom]https://i.imgur.com/EB85WUX.gif[/imgzoom]
If your avatar supports it, you can perform an avatar-specific "special action" by pressing the "Special Action" button:

[imgzoom]https://i.imgur.com/DNUU1xG.gif[/imgzoom]
To see whether the avatar supports animated speech or a special action, look at the little letters to their bottom right on the avatar selection screen:

"T" means the avatar has an animated speech view, "X" that it supports a special action. Also note that the special action can vary depending on which direction the character is facing, and in some cases it might not play at all unless you're facing a particular way. You'll have to experiment.

Chat, Menus and Buttons
It should all be pretty self-explanatory. Some buttons are grayed out because the feature is planned but not yet implemented. Note the button in the bottom right which shows/hides the chat log.

Note that if you select someone in the participant list on the left, the little floating "halo" or dot that usually follows you will be placed above their head instead. This can be a handy way to find someone in the crowd.

Also note that you can use the mouse scrollwheel (or equivalent touchpad gesture) to scroll up and down in the chat log. You can use Ctrl-Z/Y to undo/redo text entry, and on Windows you can use Ctrl-X, Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V to cut, copy and paste from the system clipboard.

Selecting Avatars
In the avatar selection screen (when you create your profile or click on the "Select avatar" button in the top menu), you can click the buttons along the top to see avatars from AGS games, LucasArts games, other games, or "Special…" (password-protected) avatars.

[imgzoom]https://i.imgur.com/ZhhLVDf.png[/imgzoom]

Click the arrows on the left and right to see even more avatars.

Special Commands
You can access some additional features by typing commands that start with slash (some of these are standard IRC commands, others client-specific):

/me <action>
Show the text as an action. /me wipes a tear from his eye will be displayed as: "*Snarky wipes a tear from his eye"

/nick <nickname>
Change your nickname to that name (if permitted)

/claptoggle
Toggle the sound of applause on/off (if you turn it off, any current applause will still finish playing, though)

/find <participant nick>
Place the character "halo" above the participant you choose (same as clicking them in the participant list).

/stop
Remove the character "halo" (from yourself or anybody). Click in the participant list or use /find to get it back.

/avatars
Access the avatar selection screen. (Same as clicking the "Set Avatar" button.)

/colors
Access the text color selection screen. (Same as clicking the "Set Speech Color" button.)

/quit
Instantly quit without any confirmation! (Same as clicking the "Quit" button.)

How do I Get on Stage, up onto the Balcony, or elsewhere?
The hosts control who gets to be on stage, as hosts, presenters, or winners accepting awards. There are also some "NPC" characters that appear on stage or elsewhere.

The balcony is for people who connect through IRC text chat. They appear as "holograms": they can speak, but not move on their own. If they get called on to present or accept an award, they'll automatically walk up to the lectern.

Using a Registered Nickname
When you first create your profile and get to picking your nickname, there's a "NickServ Password" field. This is for IRC users who already have a registered nick/password. If you don't have a password set up, leave this field blank.

If you fail to connect, you pretty much have to quit out of the program, fix whatever the problem is, and try again. If you set the wrong NickServ password, for example, you'll have to create a new profile when you restart, not use the existing one (which will then be overwritten).

The client is slow!
Yes, AGS was never meant for something like this, and there's a lot going on in the client. It's pretty resource intensive! One thing that slows it down a lot is the semi-transparent menus, so if it's running slow, try turning off all menus, including the chat log. (If you do want to see the chat log, you can exploit a bug: turn off the chat log, then open one of the menu screens (set avatar or speech color) and return. The text will now appear, but without the background.)

You can also try changing some of the settings in winsetup.exe: make sure you're running in Direct3D or OpenGL if possible, and the sprite cache size is set to max. The client often runs better in a window than in fullscreen. Other than that, just make sure your computer isn't running other apps that use a low of CPU.

You may also notice people teleporting or "warping" around. This can either be because there's too much IRC traffic (with lots of people walking around at the same time), or often because your framerate is too low for the game to keep up. We're really pushing the limits here!

It crashed!
I really hope this won't happen, but there's always a chance of a crash. At least on Mac (not sure about Linux), the application will just quit without any error message or warning.

If you do get a crash message, please copy it down (text or screenshot) and report it so it can be fixed in the future. The same goes for any other glitches or bugs you might experience: the hosts will be quite busy during the show, so if you just mention it in the chat there's a high risk we'll miss it or forget about it.

Stupot

Have fun everyone. And good luck to the nominees. Sorry I can’t join in tonight.

For everyone confused with time zones:

The ceremony will start in one hour. Download the client and get ready!

A few infos for this evening:

You have three options for joining the ceremony (more info in the first post)

  • via special awards client (best option)
  • via irc client
  • by watch the live stream
During the ceremony, the channel is moderated and will be muted from time to time. You can still talk and this will be shown in the client above the character, but it will not show up in the chat log.
You can join #ags on the same server for chit-chatting during the whole ceremony.

Thanks for last night everybody! I hope you had a good time, whether you joined through the client, IRC, or watched a stream.

Congratulations to all the nominees and winners. A remarkable showing by Whispers of a Machine; JSH, Andail and the others must be very pleased, and rightly so. Another AGS game that ranks with the best in the genre.

That near-sweep necessarily means that other very strong games didn't win in categories where they really would have deserved an award. Particularly tough on Guard Duty being locked out. But a nomination (not to say a whole slew of nominations) is recognition in itself, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who will want to check out this and a number of other titles I had missed or not found time to play.

Meanwhile, I'm trying to work out the cause (or causes) of the technical difficulties we experienced. First, did anyone get any crashes that had a different error message than this?

I'm particularly interested in what error messages people got when things crashed in the middle of things, not as they were logging on.

As for this error, it's clear enough what's happening, it's just not entirely clear why it happens.

Technical details:

Spoiler
It occurs when you first log onto the #awards channel and request the list of people on the channel. IRC responds with a list of names. We have to add each of these as a remote participant (called "NPC" in the code). However, in the list of names, the first character in each name can be a prefix that indicates special status on the channel: % for admins, @ for operators, + for those with voice, etc. So we need to strip that from the name. That's what StringFunc.asc line 152 does, in this function:

Code: ags
// Extracts the nickname from an IRCFrom string (to strip away prefix modifier characters like ~, @, +, etc.)
String GetNickPart(this String*)
{
  if ((this.Chars[0] < '0') || (this.Chars[0] > '}') || ((this.Chars[0] > '9') && (this.Chars[0] < 'A')))
    return (this.Substring(1, this.Length - 1));
  else
    return (this.Copy());
}

(This function, by the way, is completely unchanged â€" apart from renaming, formatting and the comment â€" since the very first version of the AGS Awards client written by Dualnames back in 2010. Not to cast blame or anything…  :-D)

Given that the call to String.Substring() crashes, this indicates that somewhere in the participant list, there's a user name consisting of only one character, which is not alphanumeric (more or less: the condition includes some other characters as well, for some reason). As long as that participant is in the #awards channel, no one will be able to log on with the AGS client without crashing. There are safety checks built into the AGS client to disallow such names, so it would have to be someone who joined via IRC. Does anybody have the ability to check if that's the case?
[close]
I have not found any reason why there would be a problem with more than 45 participants (or any other number less than the set limit of 90). Though IRC has a limit of 512 bytes per message, which means that things like the participant list will have to be split up into multiple messages when it goes above that length (which might happen at around that number of participants, depending on the length of people's nicks). Looking at the IRC-parsing code by Wyz, it seems like it should handle all of that, however.

Hear, hear! Simply getting nominated means that your game stood out among a slew of competitors and that it felt interesting enough to a lot of people that they went and played it, which is already a huge achievement in itself. So congratulations again to all the nominees, whether winners or not, and a huge thank you to the organizers. This was a fantastic way to spend an evening :)

Thanks again for all the trophies, and well done Cat and Snarky and everybody involved in making this happening. It's really a wonderful tradition, and a testament to our great community spirit.

I haven't been very active for quite some time, but I'll try to be around more now.

The new project by Faravid Interactive won't be made in AGS, nor will it be a P&C adventure, but more of an action RPG. I will keep you updated in gen-gen when I have more to show :)

For those who missed it or who want to watch it again with some random commentary from the Discord chat crew, here's the vid: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/583216791

And big thanks to the organizers and big congrats to all the nominees and winners!

I've uploaded the stream recording to Youtube as well https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJHKBibt4nM

Thank you! I've linked it in the first post.

@Snarky: I think the two big crashes might have been related to dismissing people quickly from stage. It happened exactly in this case twice. Afterwards I waited until a person has left and there were no more crashes.

Hi, All.
Unfortunately I couldn't be at the awards ceremony, last night. :(
I just watched the video of the proceedings and saw Vincent step onto the stage to accept the award, on behalf of our team, for "Tales of Jayvin".
Thank you to everyone who voted for our game and congratulations to all the others who took part and received an award.

Yours.
Jay.

dactylopus

Congratulations to all winners (and nominees).

Great work, everyone!

Sinitrena

Congratulations to all winners and nominees.

Wish I could have been there this year, but I'll be sure to watch the video later.

Monsieur OUXX

May I suggest that you put the recorded video in the very first post?

I was able to watch the ceremony on video - thanks for the upload!
Congratulation to all the nominated and awarded game developer!
Creating and  hosting this whole ceremony was a wonderful job done  by a lot of members. Group hug to all of you!
Especially that heartwarming commemoration for Ghost with all those little sweet ram ghosts, lots of images and the speech from bicci moved me to tears.
Can't thank you all enough for that really touching part of the ceremony.
Take care, folks!

Wow!  I had no idea I was honored with this award!  Thank you to everyone who has enjoyed the videos over the years.  Back in 2009 2008 when I started making them, I thought it would be a fun thing to do, mainly to help myself learn AGS a little more. I never imagined that so many people would watch the videos and learn about creating adventure games with AGS.  Although I haven't been creating videos in quite and while, and not active on the AGS forums, I still pop in every so often and see what has changed and how the AGS community is getting on.  It's wonderful to me that AGS is still very much alive and thriving! Keep making adventure games!!

Thank you so much for the award.  It really does mean a lot to me.

-densming

Edit: I had to go back and look - it was actually 2008 when I uploaded the first tutorial video!

Just thought I'd let you know that after testing with many participants in the same chat channel, I have been able to confirm that this is in fact the problem, and the cause of most (if not all) of the crashes we experienced during the ceremony. When the participant list grows long, it's split across multiple messages. The IRC module stitches the messages together, but in such a way that last name in the first message and first name in the second are separated by two spaces instead of one. When this list is then in turn parsed into an array, we end up with an entry that is an empty string, and trying to process this blank username causes the client to crash.

All the code involved in the bug has been unchanged since 2010, but the reason why we had never caught it is that I never found a way to live-test the client with 40+ participants. By taking a different approach this should now be possible, so hopefully it's the last time we hit this limit.

Kastchey

Wow. GJ pinning this one down, Snarky! Otherwise I'd probably lose some sleep over this in 2021 before the ceremony ;)
