I believe Stupot's got it this time, but in case he's wrong:

Did the journal mention something in the back yard or garden?
Did Gwen ask her uncle about something outside (like a favourite spot when they were kids, or where they buried a time capsule or similar)?
Did Gwen use the back door?
Did Gwen go out to fly the flag at half-mast, leaving the door unlocked for when she was going to take it down again?

Case #67

Gwen was cleaning her father's house after he had passed away. She found his old journal from back before he was even married and started reading it. Did her uncle do something to inform about the death in the family to the public? (ad, flag at half-mast, mourning bands, Facebook entry or similar)
Did Gwen forget to lock the door because she was distracted by something specific (i.e. something she had read in the journal, or something her uncle had said as opposed to just generally being distracted by her father's death and having to clear the house)?

Had he ever killed anybody before in his life?

Sorry  for the lag there in replying. I have been a bit out of it from the sheer heat here of having to go to work now and then.

My God, Mandle, how shall we ever solve this?
Maybe a tiny nudge would help :-)

It's pretty much solved. Just needs a "Solution" post to complete it.

EDIT: Maybe another question or two about the journal and phone call could help, but if the solution is close enough I will grant closure.

Did Gwen ask her uncle's permission to read the rest of the journal?

If so, then the solution is this: Gwen went to clean her father's house after he passed away. She found his old journal and began to read it. She found out something shocking - about her uncle? - and phoned him. He confirmed that what she had read was true, and gave her permission to read the rest of the journal. Gwen was so eager to finish learning the story of the father and uncle that she forgot to lock up the house and fell asleep. Later that night, a burglar, who had heard that the house was now empty, attempted to break in, only to find that the door was unlocked. He entered the house and, while looking for valuables, stumbled across a slumbering Gwen. In his panic the burglar killed her by (insert murder method of choice here - I say he smothered her with a pillow).

The one thing that's bugging me is what she read in the journal. Had the uncle committed a crime? ???

Was the uncle's secret that he was born as Gwen's aunt?  (roll)
Was the piece of information that lead to the phone call related to the uncle?
Was the piece of information that lead to the phone call related to the father?
Was the piece of information that lead to the phone call related to her mother?
Was the piece of information that lead to the phone call related to her?
There are those who believe that life here began out there...

This is pretty much correct, except is wasn't exactly something shocking she read. More something amusing. Once that is guessed I will post the full story.

Were the brothers twins?

Nope...

(The reason I'm not updating the main post is that the riddle has pretty much been solved except for the main reason Gwen called her uncle in the first place. It's not really that important so if someone doesn't hit on it soon I will just declare this solved and say what the journal entries were.)

Did her uncle have a funny nickname for her father?

Looking back, these are kind of close to the final solution in that the two brothers both did funny stuff, but nicknames are not a part of the solution.

Stupot

Did she read that her dad and uncle used to do a live double-act together and contacted the uncle to ask if he had any old tapes of their performances?
