Hotter than the fires of hell!

Hi fellow AGSers

How do people abroad cope with the fierce heat. The lily white population
(with the exception of a few bronzed bodies) of England aren't used to
sizzling, high temperatures and I feel it sucking the life out of me.

Mind you, I remember watching a TV programme telling the tale of a Brit
who had been lost in the outback of Australia. There was great concern
for his safety. He would never have been found if a helicopter crew hadn't
seen his white skin shining up through the canopy of trees.

So its not all bad  (laugh)

You go where I am now.... because it's suddenly dropped to 14C / 58F today, and I felt like getting a common cold :P

BarbWire

Hi crimson

I'll be right there ..... Sounds like heaven to me.  ;)

Cassiebsg

Get a pool, or take a nice cold shower.  ;)
There are those who believe that life here began out there...

milkanannan

We’re in UAE. Most people here go for a swim early in the morning or late in the evening (we sometimes do both!) Otherwise we just sit at home in the AC. Most people close the blinds and take a nap in the middle of the day. I make a huge vat of ice tea (just tea and lemons) and stick it in the fridge to have the next day. Lots of cold beer, too.  ;)

Mandle

Usually I would be out on a summer camp as a teacher with kids about now...

But I decided to quit doing that last year when I hit 50 years old.

It's just too brutal. It was a real test of my steel to do it even when I was in my 30s and 40s, and it felt satisfying to get through it and collapse for the next week once it was over.

But now, in my early 50s... NOPE!!!

Especially this year, I'm just sitting directly under my air con in self-isolation half the day, and then in bed under the other air con the other half.

I go out about once or twice a week for work but not this week as it's Obon holidays here in Japan.

Cases and temperatures are still rising though, so who knows what the next few weeks will be like.

If my living room air con breaks down I will just sit in a cold bath re-reading books all day, or book a weekly apartment for my wife and me in the worst-case scenario...

Hi all

Love all your replies and suggestions on ways to keep cool.

I've tried most of them but swimming is out, because I can't,
and we don't possess  the luxury of air con. An army of fans are
going above and beyond the call of duty, though.

All they go on about in this country is the importance of keeping
warm in winter. (what winter?) Lofts stuffed full of insulation
and double or triple glazing.

In the summer we just melt and end up a greasy puddle on the
floor.

Age definitely affects the bodies ability to cope with the heat and
I sympathize with those who are not so young anymore.

mkennedy

Yesterday it went up to 97 and today it was 90 or up. At least it's not as bad as that one year when it went to 110.

BarbWire

Hi mkennedy

I really dont think I could survive a temperature of 110.

The way things are going with searing temperatures around
the world, I think that the film THE DAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE
becomes more likely. I believe that the premise of the film is that a
nuclear explosion, triggered by Russia, has knocked the Earth off its
axis and pushed us nearer to the Sun.

How about a conspiracy theory now. What if the Nuclear explosions
(The ones we know about) activated by North Korea, are actually
interfering with the Earths rotation etc. We would never know, because
Governments tell us nothing. Just a thought.  :)

milkanannan

Another conspiracy: your AGS account and Slasher’s are run by the same person! (laugh)

BarbWire

Hi Milkanannan

You could be right, although I can't speak for Slasher.  ;)

Everybody loves a good conspiracy theory.  :-D

Lantern Bearer

I normally don't mind the heat so much because I live in the mountains and can get outdoors to a lake or river, but nearly half of my state is on fire and covered with smoke, and the town is crowded with tourists escaping the heat and flames, many who think the virus is a hoax and have no interest in wearing masks or socially distancing. These are weird times...

BarbWire

You can say that again, Lantern Bearer.

Weird is the best word to describe life of late.

Sorry to hear about the fire. I shouldn't be surprised
if the cause can be attributed to some thoughtless person,
rather than nature.

Tourists must be a nightmare during Covid 19, and as you
say most people don't seem to understand the gravity of the
situation.

Are the Californian fires dying down yet?

Must be devastating for the animals...

It will probably be awhile before they get it under control, they're saying it's the second worst fire California has ever had, and resources are stretched thin. I was outdoors during the lightning storm that started all of these fires, but it poured rain at the time, so none were started in the area I live. Everywhere else down lower was set on fire though. One of the many, many hazards of living in California...
