Game is released:

So during the lockdown I had too much time on my hands and decided to do something productive. AGS came to mind after a couple of years not making anything with it. I was also binge watching M*A*S*H and decided to combine the two concepts after realising there was really just one game ever made about the franchise. It's also a tool to get more pixel art practice in.

Story outline:
There isn't much of a story really since this is just a simple fangame. You take on the role of everybody's fave army clerk, Radar. Something very important to him has gone missing and he needs to find it. But as usual in the 4077th it's anything but easy. He'll need to fenagle some things in order to get his item back. For the people that are not familiar with MASH, it's a story of army doctors during the Korean war, that worked in a mobile army surgical hospital (MASH) unit. It was a dark comedy first a novel, then it was a movie and later on a very successful series. The characters are pretty much fleshed out and have defined character growth. This specific game takes place somewhere in the timeline of the 5th season. After Trapper leaves but before Frank leaves (better character conflicts :P).

Progress:
graphics: 15/15 backgrounds done, all inventory items done. Most character designs finished but not yet fully animated.
puzzles: 100%
scripting: 99% (only bug testing left)
music/sound 50% (still debating if I should use other music for background while game is running)

DOWNLOAD THE DEMO (1.53Mb)

The demo has a couple of elements from the actual game but it was specifically made to be a demo. It doesn't spoil or reveal anything. Characters will be moved and puzzles will be different :).

Looks amazing and I love M*A*S*H  :-D

Good luck with it.  (nod)
There are those who believe that life here began out there...

EDIT: Made a new background today and yesterday. Added a video of me doing it. I tweaked it a bit after recording the video (I'm still not satisfied with the shadows of the shower tent posts), but all in all that's another background done. Just 6 more to go according to plan.

EDIT: I added a little demo to the original post. Nothing much, just a bit of fun.

I've had a thought yesterday. Would anyone be interested in making more games in this "series" if I made the assets public? It would probably be kind of fun if we had more episodes of the franchise like the show itself. Every episode could have some other character on a quest to accomplish something. Some new assets here and there and soon enough we could have a small repository of assets that anyone can use.

I used to watch MASH all the time back in the day. Downloading the demo now.

If you make these assets public, are you prepared for the deluge of AfterMASH games?  :=

Sure why not. But Aftermash was set stateside. These assets won't be of much use then :P

M*A*S*H is my number one rated best TV show of all time!!!

It was just so consistently GOOD!!!

There was no such thing as a bad episode and when it was good it was GREAT!!!

And when it was great is was MIND-BLOWINGLY great!!!

viktor

I agree, although I will admit that binge watching it isn't a hot idea. There is so much episodes you kinda get fatigued after a while  (laugh)

I see what you did there, whether you meant to or not.

UPDATE:

Made another background (the outside of the supply hut), and a simple website for the game and it's possible sequels. So that's 12 out of 15 backgrounds done. I'm still missing Hotlips' tent, the inside of the supply hut and the inside of the nurse's tent. Some locations will not be featured in the game, such as col. Potter's tent or the officers club, but that just leaves more room for any future games :).

Can you identify the characters? ;)

Now, this looks magnificent! It is a splendid recreation of the sets and characters. There is a lot of possibilities, too. A surgery mini-game, perhaps? Spot-the-shrapnel!

M*A*S*H was a splendid show, which I am quite fond of. Why, I can hear the titles tune now.

viktor

Happy to say, I just finished the last background. Now I'll start coding the game using placeholders :).

I could confidently say that this is in very early alpha phase. All the puzzles are connected and work. There's still some world building left (hotspot interactions), proofreading and adding music. I'm still debating if I should make the game intro more substantial. Since the plan is to make this a series of freeware games I really don't think it's all that important to add a lot of flare to the intro. Or is it? The intro to the story for now is just a blank screen with narration and a short dialogue between some characters. It feels a bit empty. What do you guys think?

Anyone up for playtesting the alpha? It's a short game so...

Here's the sprite for Hotlips ;)

Man, this looks really good! The only thing I wanna say is about the pale color palette, it's a bit depressive but nothing serious. All the luck in your project, dude!
