How do the AGS Awards work?
(This is information mostly for new members, same procedure as every year)

Spoiler: ShowHide
Every year, the AGS community embarks on a quest to find the best games made in the last year. All games are eligible, that were added to the AGS Database in the year 2020. There is a For Your Consideration thread where authors can promote their games and players get a good overview what might be worth playing.

The awards are a two-step process: First there is a nomination phase where all community members can nominate the eligible games in several categories (it will be the same categories as last year). The top five games of each category make it to the voting (as long as they've received at least five nominations). Again, all members of the community can vote on their favourite games.
The final result is then announced in a live ceremony that can be joined either with a special client or any regular irc client.

Party like it's 1990 in this thread!

I nominated, but I should tell you that the code didn't allow me to just nominate a few games in the "game and character" category... Apparently one had to fill every option there - which I am sure wasn't the original intention  :=

Just like last year, I have created a Google sheet with all the titles eligible for this year's awards, the links and some basic data.

If anyone would like to use it, please make a copy of the spreadsheet to your own Google or local drive - the shared version is read only for obvious reasons.
There's a lot of blanks in the Voice Work and Genre columns because my own backlog is still huge, but I will be updating it as I go.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1GyM_bHoubtqz3LJFq6lIuBIAAQNWh57yE_N2vvVHEtk/edit?usp=sharing

I hope it helps some of you to keep track of the games played!

Just keep in mind, the above link is only a reference spreadsheet, in order to nominate you need to go here:

Thanks AGA for setting up the nominations!

Nominations have started!

Use the link in the the forum banner to select the games you deem worthy in each category.

Please let us know if you encounter any problems with the nomination page.

Nominations will close at 23:59 GMT on Sunday 28 February 2021.

Remember, you don't have to play all games to nominate. If you have played a game and liked the puzzles, nominate it! Just make sure that you nominate the games you have played in the appropriate categories and not go fanboy all over for a single game.
If you are not sure which games to play and what categories to nominate, check out the For Your Consideration thread.

That's what I call dedication - great effort! It is very appreciated  :)

For those of you who cannot play all games, here are some ideas I collected last year on how to tackle nominations:
  • Play the games as soon as they come out and takes notes. This is IMHO the best option.
  • Play the games promoted in the For your consideration thread. Here the games are nicely presented and you can easily choose the ones that appeal to you.
  • Watch let's plays of the games on Youtube. This is also a valid option if you can't or don't want to buy a commercial game.
  • Play only a part of some games. You can probably judge the quality of sprites and background as well as voice acting within the first 10 minutes of playing.
  • Only play games you are interested in. No interest in demos or non-adventure games? Don't play them and focus on other things.
  • Absolutely no time to play games? Just think about the games you have played during last year and only nominate them in appropriate categories.

Remember, nominating does not mean that you have to play all games. Nominating a game for a certain category does not mean you think it is superior to all other games, it just means that the game is very good at a certain aspect.

I'm using Kastchey's form, and it's a great help. Thanks! However:

Is there a list of what games are considered demos/which games of this year also have eligible demos listed as downloads?

Is there a list of which games have voice work?

I tried the search function with parameters in the games section, but it isn't foolproof. These two categories above have the fewest games to choose from, all the more important that none are overlooked.

Re: AGS Awards 2020 - Nominate!
Glad to hear you find it useful!

I think I have captured all the demos in the spreadsheet. As for voice work, no, unfortunately there is no indication in the database so I've only managed to mark a few I know of (my backlog is HUGE this year...). I'll happily accept some help - if someone knows of any other games eligible for this year's awards that have voice work, please post a list here and I'll update the spreadsheet.

Off the top of my head, there is voice work in the following:

BYO-Hero
Detective Boiled-Hard Mini Case
Detective Boiled-Hard – Case File: Death of the Space Dino Hunter
Maniac Metalhead Mania
Play Xylophone (sort of)
This is the Way
Whack-A-Soul

But I'm sure there are more!

Edit: And Sleuth, of course.

How does the music/sound category work? Does the music have to be created specifically to the game, or does music used by permission count? (Game in question is Dread Mac Farlane - Son of the Pirate, with "Some songs by the group Ye Banished Privateers, with their kind permission.")

More games with voice work:

Suli: Fallen Harmony (French speech during intro)
The Office (Not that one)

Is the Indiana Jones game considered a demo?

IMHO the music has to be created specifically for the game.

Only 5 days left! We need more nominations!

Remember, only the top 5 games that have at least 5 votes each will be nominated for each category. So far, there are several categories with less than 5 possible nominees and even some with none at all.

Re: AGS Awards 2020 - Nominate!
It doesn't really surprise me that there are more nominations in some categories than in others.

When I nominated, some categories were easily filled up with lots of candidates, while others were really difficult because they ask for stuff I don't necessarily remember after playing a game. I see that this coming year, I'll need to think about this while playing the games in order to make my mind up earlier.

Case in mind: music and sound. I would guess most members here are writers or graphic artists in some capacity, while the musicians are outnumbered. While I can remember the feel of a game, puzzles, the look and the wordings, I find it harder to remember music or sound from something I played a year ago, because I didn't set out to notice it. Musicians would probably have this the other way around.

Best Programming

Also the other categories could do with more votes.

I will deliberately break the mold and suggest some characters for your nomination pleasure. I was a bit taken aback when Cat wrote in the other thread that there were few characters nominated in the Best Character category, when I feel that this year have been very rich when it comes to great characters.
The problem is, that there are so many characters! There are plenty of nominations for various characters, but to be an eligible nominee, a single character has to have at least 5 votes. Btw, you can nominate multiple characters from the same game, if you want.

I was confused by the "best character" category because the survey's label says "best character art" so I thought it was only about the drawings, not the character's overall charisma/lines/vibe :/

EDIT: Dang! There was actually BOTH! I mixed the two categories while taking my notes in preparation of my votes, now I have to think about it again  :-D :~(

I suppose the nominations are secret now before the deadline. However, I would find it interesting to see a complete list of every character suggested for this particular award, in order to see what kind of character/behaviour/background strikes a chord with the players. (Not how many nominations they received, but simply who the community picked.) If this is not possible or unwanted, then think no more of it.

Last few hours!

@heltenjon
I prefer not to give away too much detail about the votes. One reason is that people might be disappointed if their game didn't get any votes, the other being that I assume some of the games that just got one vote got it from the author.
I will tell you a few stats with the results tomorrow, but not a complete list of games that got any votes.

Also many thanks to everyone who nominated! I was keeping my fingers crossed for some of the art categories, but definitely didn't expect this many 8-0. "Best programming", heh, glad nobody saw the actual code ;).

All my picks ended up on the list as well, unfortunately didn't manage to play all of the nominees - have to fix that now.

 ???  :-D  :=

Relic of the Viking wasn't nominated in the categories where I thought it would make sense to be nominated, but did get nominated in categories that I did not imagine (it's not even really a demo, it's a medium-length game  ;-D )
But yeah why not!    (laugh)

If someone was disappointed that their game didn't get nominated, here was my own votes. Maybe it will warm up some hearts?

Thanks to half the AGS community who voted! That's awesome!

While it's no surprise that SLEUTH wins the voice category, I had at least hoped that Detective Boiled-Hard would get a nomination. It's kind of the opposite of SLEUTH's solution, with one guy doing all the voices. And it's hilarious.  (laugh)

"Best programming", heh, glad nobody saw the actual code ;)

I nominated you for that because I saw a few interesting things, like the zoom out, or the shading of the character fading nicely when he goes up and down the elevator (it might just be a semi-transparent black overlay, but nevermind, the illusion worked).

Thanks! Glad people notice things like that. The elevator shading was just a bunch of regions with progressively lighter light levels, but yeah, come to think of it, the camera effects were a bit of a pain :).

In a few days, voting will hopefully start.

Until then, you can already start playing the nominated games.

I think there is a check that you cannot vote for your own game, but I'm not sure about it.

HOLY CARP

I've been pretty absent from the forums so I hadn't really kept up to date with the awards nomination process... MY FACE when I saw Dangerous Derek's Livestream had been nominated for Best Short Game! I am so flattered, thank you so much to anyone who played, enjoyed, and/or nominated my little game! As a relative newcomer to the community I am really just so pleased, this has made my day!

Good luck to everyone who has been nominated, I will do my best to play the nominated games so that I can contribute in the voting process!

A quick question: It says you cannot vote for your own game. What constitutes "my own game"? Can you vote for a game if you have had a peripheral role, like betatester, translator, proofreader? Voice actor?

From a technical point, I think this applies to the main author. If you just tested a game or had another minor role, I think it's alright to vote for it.

I guess, if you voice acted in it, might be "wrong" to vote for it in the voice acting category... though, since many games here, most use other AGSer as voices, that could potentially make the better voice acting game to no win (specially if you have plenty of voice, and % of voters is low), because half the users voice acted in it and can't vote on their own game... On the other hand, who's to say that one didn't only voted for it, cause it was his own game?  ??? Neat dilemma.
There are those who believe that life here began out there...

Given that there is only one game nominated in this category, I don't think it's a concern this year.

By the way, the date for the ceremony depends in large part on getting, and then importing and setting up, the assets for the nominated games from the authors. We still haven't received them for about half the nominated titles. You should have got a PM from Kastchey about it.

(If we don't receive the assets we'll just add in a barebones game presentation, but especially for games that are nominated for multiple awards it's nice to have a few different screens, music, a custom avatar, etc.)

Windows (.zip) – 289 MB [mirror]
MacOS (.zip) – 300 MB [mirror]
Linux (.tar.gz) – 292 MB [mirror]

Once extracted, the client is about 500 MB in size.

If you want to try it out in advance, one thing I suggest you test is the typing. Certain keys/characters may not work on all versions. It would also be good if a Linux user could confirm that everything is packaged up correctly.

It would also be good if a Linux user could confirm that everything is packaged up correctly.

The engine version is old enough that the PNG library issue is present, so I think for most people it isn't going to start:
Quote
error while loading shared libraries: libpng12.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Permissions-wise everything is set as executable, which isn't correct in terms of the file types, but it does mean that the parts that need to be executable are executable. tar on macOS should be bsdtar which supports mtree format natively, so you should be able to create a map of how to build the archive by running this in the game directory:
Code: Adventure Game Studio
  1. tar -acvf ../../AGSAwards.mtree *

Then edit the file to set the permissions you want, so you end up with something like this (note symlink path needs to be relative or the entry needs to be removed):
Code: [Select]
#mtree
./AGSAwards2020 mode=755 gid=0 uid=0 type=file

Commit this file and then use that as the input for the archive, so assuming you store the mtree file at the root of the project directory you would run:
Code: Adventure Game Studio
  1. tar -cvzf AGSAwards2020.tar.gz -C Compiled/Linux @../../AGSAwards.mtree

You can use the same file on current versions of Windows 10 (reverse the slash direction in the tar commands). Or this will do it for you.

Thanks. I believe in the past this problem was fixed by installing libpng12 from here. Last year somebody repackaged the build with the dependency included, but I'm not sure exactly how that is done.

Permissions-wise everything is set as executable, which isn't correct in terms of the file types, but it does mean that the parts that need to be executable are executable.

So, this is a separate problem, right? Does it break anything, or is it just that some of the file properties are not technically correct? I must admit, I found the instructions rather confusing (in particular, I don't know how to "edit the file to set the permissions you want," since I do not know which permissions are needed for each file).

It doesn't break anything but there are also additional files in the archive which you didn't need to distribute. The example mtree file is a valid one you can use. It uses mode=755 for executable files and directories, and mode=644 otherwise.

There are three possibilities that come to mind:

1. Yes, it's a problem with your network (maybe a port filter on your router). You could install an IRC client to test if you can connect.
2. You added a password when you created your profile, but the nickname is not registered on the server; or your nickname is registered but you didn't provide the right password. In this case you need to restart the client and create a new profile.
3. You are not in fact using the 2020 client, but a client from a previous year. I have blocked these to avoid any confusion.

Huge congratulations to all winners and nominees of the awards and also to everyone who released a game in the last year. I might not have managed to play every single one, but I can say with confidence that every game I played had some enjoyable elements. Also congratulations to Cat and eri0o for the special awards and thank you to Snarky, Kastchey and everyone else involved in organising the awards. You did an amazing job. And last but not least, well done to my fellow presenters.

Wow, 20 years of the Awards and 10 years with the Client. This community is fantastic!

Thanks to everybody who made the awards possible and who created great games! Next year make those games a little worse, though, so I have a chance of winning an award. ;)

Thanks to everyone who attended, congratulations to all the nominees and winners! Not to mention all the people who supported and helped out.

I hope you all had a good time. I'm sorry for the people who tried to log on and were not able to; I hope you were at least able to follow it on the livestream or on Discord. Thanks to the bug reports I was able to locate and fix the problem quite easily (yes, it was related to the same bug as the crash last year—it was fixed for most cases, but remained one place in the code).

I thought the evening was fairly enjoyable myself (though I'm always stressed out and preoccupied with the "A/V support"). I like that we come together like this to celebrate the games and the people who make them.

It was a fantastic ceremony! A coder friend of mine was freaking out about what AGS could do with the client. And yes, it seemed like magic!

Nice!  8-)

For my part, one thing I'm particularly happy with, even though it's pretty simple code compared to many other parts of the client, is the evolution of the UI.

Originally we had opaque menus that covered up parts of the screen at all times. You could expand and collapse the chat window depending on how many lines to show, and hide or show the participant list, but that was all:

Then the GUI windows became semi-transparent, allowing the room to take up the entire screen (though buttons were still opaque):

Then we added a "cinema mode" where they were all hidden (you could hide the chatlog too, I'm pretty sure):

Then we tried only showing them if the mouse cursor was nearby, like the top-menu in some adventure games (which turned out to be fiddly in practice, with so many hidden buttons). We also got new, graphical buttons drawn by Kastchey. And finally we adopted the "YouTube style" where they fade out and disappear unless you move the mouse:

Personally I think this works very well and is quite slick. Along with the mouseover labels, a text field with a proper movable cursor and clipboard copy/paste support, and ability to mouse-scroll the chatlog and the participant and awards lists (the latter a new addition this year), it feels pretty smooth in use, IMO, and not what you typically see in an AGS game.

The client is wonderful. Great job! But one thing... it was hard to me to click on the award. Sometimes it did nothing. That's the reason that i walk around the award like a drunk 😅 Most of the time the award disappeared once i left the stage. It was the lag or it was my little experience on collecting awards!? 😅

Oh yeah, that's not interactive on your end: it's controlled by the "show director" (me). The reasons for that are mainly related to the technical implementation (basically, anything that needs to be synced between all the participants and persistent must be controlled by the director; this is considered persistent because if someone logs on halfway through, they should be able to see the location of the trophy and the girl scouts). The workaround would be that you clicking on the trophy would send a message to the director, who then broadcasts it to everybody else.

I would like to try to hand over this control to the recipients, because it's hard to know when the time is right: I don't want to rush you, but also not keep you waiting. (I think the handover should also be decoupled from the screen switching to show the trophy, or it should be possible to go back and show the game again.)

If anyone has any other questions or notes about the client (annoyances, suggestions), please post them here. I can't promise to fix everything, but feedback on which issues matter to you is helpful to set priorities.

Ah, ok. I didn't know what to do after the speech. I assumed that I just had to take the award and that would lead to leaving the stage!  :-D

I regret not having been there for this. I will watch on replay when available. I do miss the old musty theater.

Yes, next year, anywhere from February to May. Most likely around March or April though.

Thank you for the answer.
I will then wait to propose my game at this time.
I found the concept of game avatars really fun on the client.
Too bad my sprite character (Grandma) is not in pixelart otherwise I will have proposed it for the 2021 ceremony  ;-D

Avatars doen't need to be in pixelart. Just pack your character and send it over to Snarky when the time comes.  :)
