Thanks to everyone who attended, congratulations to all the nominees and winners! Not to mention all the people who supported and helped out.

I hope you all had a good time. I'm sorry for the people who tried to log on and were not able to; I hope you were at least able to follow it on the livestream or on Discord. Thanks to the bug reports I was able to locate and fix the problem quite easily (yes, it was related to the same bug as the crash last year—it was fixed for most cases, but remained one place in the code).

I thought the evening was fairly enjoyable myself (though I'm always stressed out and preoccupied with the "A/V support"). I like that we come together like this to celebrate the games and the people who make them.

It was a fantastic ceremony! A coder friend of mine was freaking out about what AGS could do with the client. And yes, it seemed like magic!

Nice!  8-)

For my part, one thing I'm particularly happy with, even though it's pretty simple code compared to many other parts of the client, is the evolution of the UI.

Originally we had opaque menus that covered up parts of the screen at all times. You could expand and collapse the chat window depending on how many lines to show, and hide or show the participant list, but that was all:

Then the GUI windows became semi-transparent, allowing the room to take up the entire screen (though buttons were still opaque):

Then we added a "cinema mode" where they were all hidden (you could hide the chatlog too, I'm pretty sure):

Then we tried only showing them if the mouse cursor was nearby, like the top-menu in some adventure games (which turned out to be fiddly in practice, with so many hidden buttons). We also got new, graphical buttons drawn by Kastchey. And finally we adopted the "YouTube style" where they fade out and disappear unless you move the mouse:

Personally I think this works very well and is quite slick. Along with the mouseover labels, a text field with a proper movable cursor and clipboard copy/paste support, and ability to mouse-scroll the chatlog and the participant and awards lists (the latter a new addition this year), it feels pretty smooth in use, IMO, and not what you typically see in an AGS game.

The client is wonderful. Great job! But one thing... it was hard to me to click on the award. Sometimes it did nothing. That's the reason that i walk around the award like a drunk 😅 Most of the time the award disappeared once i left the stage. It was the lag or it was my little experience on collecting awards!? 😅

Oh yeah, that's not interactive on your end: it's controlled by the "show director" (me). The reasons for that are mainly related to the technical implementation (basically, anything that needs to be synced between all the participants and persistent must be controlled by the director; this is considered persistent because if someone logs on halfway through, they should be able to see the location of the trophy and the girl scouts). The workaround would be that you clicking on the trophy would send a message to the director, who then broadcasts it to everybody else.

I would like to try to hand over this control to the recipients, because it's hard to know when the time is right: I don't want to rush you, but also not keep you waiting. (I think the handover should also be decoupled from the screen switching to show the trophy, or it should be possible to go back and show the game again.)

If anyone has any other questions or notes about the client (annoyances, suggestions), please post them here. I can't promise to fix everything, but feedback on which issues matter to you is helpful to set priorities.

Ah, ok. I didn't know what to do after the speech. I assumed that I just had to take the award and that would lead to leaving the stage!  :-D

I regret not having been there for this. I will watch on replay when available. I do miss the old musty theater.

Yes, next year, anywhere from February to May. Most likely around March or April though.

Thank you for the answer.
I will then wait to propose my game at this time.
I found the concept of game avatars really fun on the client.
Too bad my sprite character (Grandma) is not in pixelart otherwise I will have proposed it for the 2021 ceremony  ;-D

Avatars doen't need to be in pixelart. Just pack your character and send it over to Snarky when the time comes.  :)
