I made a fangame based on the famous Simpsons segment "Steamed Hams", using sprites based on Simpsons Arcade and Maniac Mansion (NES)!

You've invited Superintendent Chalmers over for lunch! He'll be here any second and is expecting a well cooked roast!

Fortunately, you have been preparing just such a roast all morning! Hopefully you don't accidentally burn it and set certain events into motion...

NOTE: This game is intended as more of an interactive experience than an actual game. For those of you looking for an actual challenging adventure, ignore this game. It never happened. It doesn't exist. These aren't the droids you're looking for. Move along.

Looks brilliant. And very funny episode. Well done!

Snarky

Very nice Steamed Hams adaptation!

And it's so cool to be able to just play the game directly on the GameJolt site. Perfect for bit-size games like this.

Wuhu! Very fun little game :)

Thank you for using the web port!  ;-D It's good to see more people using and finding out how well it works. Curiosity, the title music you rendered to an ogg file?

Indeed, just a cheeky stereo mix recording of the midi played in a media player!

I really love the web port, thanks so much for making it! My one complaint would be the way it handles fonts seems to be noticably imperfect:

These fonts are right out of the Tumbleweed template so I figure a few people will be hit with this issue. ScummVM has very similar issues, and I see you've already mentioned font problems in your initial post about it.

Also, when I host it on my own server, keyboard input works fine. But when I host it on GameJolt, keyboard input very very rarely works (I've only seen it work once).

To sidestep these issues I reworked all text to remove the * character, and compiled a slightly different version of the game which replaces some of the graphics saying to "press any key" to instead say "click anywhere", as I had a pretty strong feeling people would avoid downloading extra files if they could, so I should try and make that version as robust as possible!

But all in all, very minor gripes and thanks again for making it! :-D

This is very, very well done. Steamed Hams lives on!

I absolutely love everything about this!!

Question - how did you achieve the 9-verb GUI? I love how you matched it to the style of The Simpsons as well
“Art is an object riddled with sharp edges that can cut you.  You can pound all those edges away and make it smooth and make it safe, but what you’re left with is just a shapeless blob.  It’s safe and it’s smooth, but it’s uninteresting.” Ron Gilbert

Thanks! It's simply the one from the Tumbleweed template included in AGS with all the translation stuff commented out, and then the images replaced with my own custom ones. And coordinates fixed in scripts etc etc

It looks like this by default:

I also changed these settings in "TemplateSettings.asc" to these, to help it feel even more outdated and classic lol but that's just because I'm a sucker for the early 90s I guess:

The fediverse needs great indie game developers! Find me there!

Very well done! I had to rewatch the episode after playing the game.

I wonder what was the first story to

utilize a similar plot about replacing a ruined dinner with something.

I remember this plot type from several Disney comics I read back in the 70s or 80s - I think Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck has done it several times. (But it's probably a lot older than that.) But the Simpsons take is my favourite.

eri0o

Hey, you made into Kotaku!

Spoiler
About the font problems, I am aware. I will try to post about it in the web port topic soon about it.

About the keyboard though... That's news to me, I need to explore game jolt a bit more to see what is happening. I made most of my tests locally, and later on my own server and also in itch.io, but I made fewer tests on game jolt. I will look into it.

I will investigate and update the information in the web port topic to avoid adding information here not related to the game. :)

I appreciate all of that and will be sure to follow that main thread for updates!

And yes, Kotaku, IGN, PC Gamer!! It's been an awesome crazy weekend that I never ever could have seen coming!

IN FACT! This probably won't be true for much longer, but for the last 2 days if you Google search for "Simpsons" and go to the news tab, the top two articles are both covering this game!

Even Bill Oakley (the original writer) retweeted it a few times and said it was fantastic. I am ridiculously pleased... (laugh)

dactylopus

Hey, congrats on the release, this is a lot of fun!

Great interpretation of a classic.

Thanks for posting!

Matti

I had fun playing this episode, especially the original voices made this a nice experience!

I've released a (very) minor update to Steamed Hams: The Graphic Adventure, and more importantly made it open source!

https://github.com/NeoDement/game_SteamedHams

The patch notes are available in the project description on GameJolt (https://gamejolt.com/games/SteamedHams/673130).
