New AGS logo
« on: 16 Jun 2022, 21:33 »
As the new AGS website is currently developed, it's time to think about updating the logo. The current logo has a glow which looks nice on a white or light blue background, but it looks off in dark mode (see https://new-site.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/?status=signed-in&theme=dark).

WHAT WE HAVE SO FAR:

1) The current one but traced to support other backgrounds more easily and versions for cup and Larry:

1.1 (light themedark theme)
1.2 (light themedark theme)
1.3 (light themedark theme)
1.4 (light themedark theme)

2) Cup on the left, text next to it, no glow:

2.1 (light themedark theme)

2.2 (light themedark theme)

2.3 (light themedark theme)

2.4 (light themedark theme)

2.5 (light themedark theme)

2.6 (light themedark theme)
2.7 (light themedark theme)
2.8 (light themedark theme)

3) The cup is behind the first letter(s)

3.1 (light themedark theme)
3.2 (light themedark theme)
3.3 (light themedark theme)
3.4 (light themedark theme)
3.5 (light themedark theme)

4) The cup replaces the U

4.1 (light themedark theme)
4.2 (light themedark theme)
4.3 (light themedark theme)

5) Something completely different

5.1 (light themedark theme)
5.2 (light themedark theme)
5.3 (light themedark theme)

Original text continued:

So I gave it a quick go. I thought about tracing the current logo as vector but I was lazy and instead used the font that is currently used for the design of the new page (Nunito from Google fonts). The new logo should somehow fit the colors and style of the new website (https://new-site.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/)

I know the kerning and spacing between letters is off, this is mostly to give you an idea.
I will not be able to work on this in the next few days, this thread is supposed to be a kickstarter for logo ideas. I hope people will come up with much better ideas and we find a new logo everyone is happy with. The pic is an svg, so it should be easy for you to modify it.

Thanks, but as I said spacing is still off. I also wonder if it is maybe too professional and clean and should be more "fun"? On the other hand, the Unity logo for example uses an even plainer font and just the icon standing out more. Maybe we can add a better cup in front of the text? At the moment, it is just a rectangle with a handle.

I'd love to see what logos and ideas other people come up with.

Maybe fill the cup with blue too? not fully, but with an offset, to keep white internal outline.

How about this font instead?
https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Passion+One?category=Serif,Display&preview.text=Adventure%20Game%20Studio&preview.text_type=custom

Apart from the balloony look of the font I already like the logo - including the cup  :)

I don't really like the "Passion One" font - I'm not sure this kind of serif fonts works well for logos. But I'll try to make the logo less balloony.

Very nice one, LimpingFish! I like the concept and the small caps, but I'm not too fond of the shape of the cup. What font did you use?

Edit: Okay, I gave it another go:

Cup with blue fill, fixed spacing between characters, fixed the "G" a bit, squeezed the font to make it look less balloony. I'm not sure on the squeeze, though. It might look too... well, squeezed now.

Thank you!

The font is Calibri Bold, which is a font that comes with Windows.

The cup is a tea-cup, as opposed to a mug, because I though it would be funny to finally see a cup take center stage (I have vague recollections of a thread about how the graphic of the blue cup within AGS is actually intended to be a tea-cup!), but I'm not too keen on how it turned out myself.

The shape and placement of the cup is the thing I like best about LimpingFish's version. I think it's a lot better than the mugs in most other proposals, which IMO have the wrong proportions. (I'm not just thinking of your design here, cat, but others that have been proposed over the years.) But the AGS community seems hopelessly split between those who favor a coffee cup-like design and those who think the logo should be more like a mug.

Don't get me wrong, I totally like the placement of the cup. What doesn't work for me is the bottom of the cup. The small dent that is caused by the rim at the bottom of the cup looks off when you see just the outline. Maybe just changing the bottom to be more round would be enough?

OT: I like to drink tea from cups like the one in my logo and coffee from espresso cups that look more like the one in LimpingFish's logo  ;)

Edit: One concern that comes up: Would highlighting the first two letters with the cup make people think of ads? Maybe the cup should only highlight the first "A"?

@eri0o: So many creative ideas! Please keep in mind that the logo should work in light and dark mode and also a light blue (afaik #DEEDFF).

@cat Thanks! I was mostly playing around with the idea but not thinking much about the webpage.

Perhaps we could have a print screen of the website in both themes, just to check the logo with it?

@zabnat: I like your cups, they are a great middle ground between my and LimpingFish's cups. They also give me an idea of a combination with one of the previous AGS logos.

Edit: And here it is:

It looks a bit weird on non-white backgrounds, I might add a white border around the icon. But tomorrow.

Slightly different take, moving the text, and altering the rotation of the cup.

I'll admit it's not the best model of a teacup (at least of one that looks like the "classic" AGS cup), but it was free and Photoshop's 3D capabilities handle it well.

Edit: Here's one with a mug more like cat's...

Edit: And here it is:

I like the cup.  :)

I'm not 100% sold on the font yet, but I'm starting to see where we could go with it.

It took me a while to realise what that white thing on the cup is though (a teabag label?). I thought it was a flyswatter or can even be interpreted the cup as leaked when the logo is small.

I really like the font style in Erioo's post, with the 'Adventure' on top, and the 'Game Studio' below.

And I *REALLY* love the cups in Erioo's post and Limping Fish's post (further down).  The cup handles are actually on the correct side, ready to be picked up.   :cheesy:
It's always frustrated me a lot, seeing the cup handle on the wrong side.

Yeah, it's fine to have the SVG file as is, but I would suggest using an exported png to show directly in the forums, just avoid the font being different because the system font is different (iPhone, Android, Windows, ...)

You should convert the text to paths. This way, it does not have to include the font, because all that is left of the text is vectors in the shape of the letters. The benefits over png: It's resizable without loss and others can still use/edit parts of it (for example, I only adjusted character spacing after converting the letters to paths). It might be a good idea to keep the original with the text somewhere so you can easily change the font etc.

@cat, that's a good idea about path! So probably having the two svgs of whatever is decided at the end.

@abstauber, that traced cup is really cool. I wonder if we can have a little arm but it cuts off and has a little bone at the end instead of the rest of Larry, like if some adventure death scene has gotten the rest of him.  :-D

I don't like the modern "flat" design for icons, as it makes everything anonymous and boring.

And then it got me and I went totally whimsical to do justice to all cups and mugs ;)
I like the version with three cups. It is a bit silly, but I like it because of that. It gives the logo some personality that these flat designs often don't have.

So, where should we go from here? Is someone still working on another log idea? Shall we do a voting and try to narrow it down to, say, 3-5 logos?

Sounds good to me.

I really like your logo, cat, both the cup and the font.

I'm not sure if I'm happy with the tea bag though, as I want to imagine the mug being a coffee mug  ;)

I really don't remember last time I used AGS (for sure more than 15 years ago) anyway I would like to contribute once again if possible.
I modified one of the posted logos:

Hi Besh!

Great logo, thanks for posting it!

Also, great you came back to the forums - I used your fantastic mouse gesture module for one of my games and even made some modifications to it. Thanks for making the module and sharing it!

@cat, can you modify Besh's logo and add the tea little handle you made in yours?

Also my favorite one is now Besh's!

@eri0o I don't quite understand - do you mean to replace the cup Besh used with another cup? Which one?

The one with the inverted fly squatter, the other end of the tea bag, can you put it in Besh's cup?

I don't like the flipped cup but I like the white border (instead of transparent). Anyway, I will try to organise the logos we have so far.

Okay, I tried to group the logos by type, i.e. the general layout. I think we should decide on this one first. Later on, we can decide on font and cup shape and details. This means, for now we will not deal with "the outline should be 1px wider" or similar. It's really about the basic concept.

1) The current one but traced to support other backgrounds more easily and versions for cup and Larry:

1.1 (light themedark theme)
1.2 (light themedark theme)
1.3 (light themedark theme)
1.4 (light themedark theme)

2) Cup on the left, text next to it, no glow:

2.1 (light themedark theme)

2.2 (light themedark theme)

2.3 (light themedark theme)

2.4 (light themedark theme)

2.5 (light themedark theme)

2.6 (light themedark theme)
2.7 (light themedark theme)
2.8 (light themedark theme)

3) The cup is behind the first letter(s)

3.1 (light themedark theme)
3.2 (light themedark theme)
3.3 (light themedark theme)
3.4 (light themedark theme)
3.5 (light themedark theme)

4) The cup replaces the U

4.1 (light themedark theme)
4.2 (light themedark theme)
4.3 (light themedark theme)

5) Something completely different

5.1 (light themedark theme)
5.2 (light themedark theme)
5.3 (light themedark theme)

I hope I didn't forget any logo.

Discuss!

If we do 4.1, can the outline be filled? I much prefer that cup design and handle orientation to the ones in 4.2 and 4.3.

+1

Also, it's a bit hard to choose and I would have preferred having two or three votes.

I agree it's difficult to vote like this, that's why I used numbers for the whole sections. I think we should either vote for sections only or have 3 votes per person.

And of course we can discuss outline fill, handle orientation and stuff like that, but I would like to decide on the general concept first.

I had a bit of a play with the logos on the site, so see what matches best. I feel the blue currently used by all colours is not the best choice, so please ignore that (I know it's a detail that easily can be adjusted).

This is 2.5. I tried that one because that font awesome cup is used throughout the website (e.g. in the awards) and I thought it would be a nice consistency.
Light theme: https://new-site.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/?logo=25
Dark theme: https://new-site.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/?logo=25&theme=dark

This is 3.5. I like the quirky cups and the highlight of the letters AGS, but I feel it doesn't suit the new design unfortunately:
Light theme: https://new-site.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/?logo=35
Dark theme: https://new-site.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/?logo=35&theme=dark

I'll try to add the most popular logos in a bit so you've got a complete picture.

I've changed the poll to max three votes per user, and edited cat's post to also include links to the each of the logos in the context of the new site's light and dark themes.

My issue with the  font awesome cup is that it is an existing design. I think a logo should be uniqe to what it represents. Rather use the logo cup for the rest of the page.

Ideally we'd then have an SVG version of whichever cup ends up in the logo, so we could then use this throughout the site.

The current logo on the site theoretically should not be used from the text of Microsoft font license. Font Awesome symbols also have specific licensing that make it hard to use it in a logo last time I checked.

I'd love to use whatever cup ends up in the logo throughout the site. The only reason I use the font awesome one is because I don't have anything better.

I voted for 2.2, 3.4 and 4.1 because I think those logos work best in light AND dark mode.

Looking at the logos now, having 2.4 in the outline colours of 2.2 would also have been nice.

No matter which logo gets most votes in the end, we should definitely optimise it regarding stroke width, colour, spacing and so on for light and dark mode.

While these look good here in the forum, I don't think they work on white and dark background of the new site layout. I feel they should be blue without outline. I think it looks better that way.
