Yes, in accordance to forum tradition, the annual debate-competition is once again cancelled.
The slow voting-process post-poned the contest to a point where I now simply don't have time to run it (you should see my schedule this week).

I thank all the competitors, it's always fascinating to see how serious and eloquate my fellow ags:ers actually can be when it comes to it...some of the debates really impressed me. I hope this sensible and mature atmosphere will spread to the other boards and stay there for a while.
Scid and Unilin's mocking duel really made me laugh out loud, so I'm sad that it won't go on anymore.

So, thanks, and sorry. Next year will be much better.
Next year...

That sucks.
I was really looking forward to the insult competition (despite the fact I didn't make it through anyway) - in fact, I hereby challenge anyone to a contest in the off topic forum...

Squinky

I would love to be involved in an insult competetion...but it would probably degrade pretty quickly...into complete stupidity...

Sorry you had to stop it all Andail, good effort by everyone though...

Andail_uni

Well, heck, someone else can take over the business.
The mockery-challenge would surely work out nicely anyway...

This is a very interesting theory you present there, Andail, but I think it's flawed. You see, the debate competition can't possible be over while the people who are taking part in it are not willing to part. The competition is what we can define as a 'fun community activity', and the people don't want to stop it. And after all, do we not to enjoy the forums?

Also, taking this thing away from them might channel their agressive energies towards other targets, thus possibly harming the friendly atmosphere on the AGS forums. Do we want to have whole threads filled with mocking and hatred? Do we not want to feel we know the person called "LilGryphMaster", "m0ds" or "DGMacphee"?

Edit: WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT'S NOT A DEBATE TOPIC?

Next time, it might be worth to consider picking some dedicated people, from these forums, to read the debate threads and decide on the winner.

Course, the contestants would have to use other names to post under - so these judges wouldn't fall pray to favoritism.

It would solve the not enough votes and the your panel of people you've picked to read and decide who wins are really lazy and can't be bothered to go through all that text problems.

What with me and Unilin being the only two people to reach round two, I hereby declare us both co-winners. So this contest ends on a happy note after all. Wheeze!
Those who can, do, and those who can't brag about how they do it at least fifty times a day somewhere on the internet.

next time, there should be a character limit - the debate threads had sooo much text in it....

When wanting to vote I instantly clicked the thread away

I still think the debate competition can still go on. I think one of our problems was letting the community vote. While a goos idea, initially, it has been shown otherwise. Not everyone has voted in every debate, leaving more or less judgment from the ocmmunity whether or not to vote. Yes, I am aware that some debates were longer than others. So people with short attention spans or people who care not to read, should not be the people we use to decide a debate. We should have an odd number of judges that are people who will be committed to voting, no matter how long the debate topics seem. This does represent a problem of its own, considering that the community, who no longer has voting power, may not be as interested in the debates anymore. However, the debates are really for those who are debating, it's not so much a spectators sport, so the problems not huge.

We should still commence with these debates with the rules we have now, I'm just suggesting ideas.

As a matter of fact, we had a jury last year. It went pretty well at first, and we had really really long discussions analysing the competitors debates. The problem it all took so long to decide, that we ran out of time, and things just went out of hands and we abbandoned it.
That's why I changed to this method; the voters are not required to make a thorough analysis, just to cast a vote and then we will go with the majority.
It's a hard problem to get people motivated...perhaps the poll-system is the answer, I don't know.
