I got this e-mail tonight? is this some kind of joke going around?
-------------------------------------------

Dear Sir,

It has come to our attention that you or someone using your IP address have registered and/or visited several illegal pornography web sites within the past three months and have downloaded federally prohibited material. Although pornography itself is not illegal, these pictures, documents and films are prohibited from travel across interstate lines. As most internet traffic violates these federal and state statutes, your actions are considered in violation of Code 7 of the Electronic Decency Act. As of the first day of this month, all traffic that originates from your email address or associated Internet Protocol Address will be logged and reported to the proper authorities. We will also be notifying your ISP and will be reviewing their logs as well.

This email is to notify you of the measures that are being taken. Please cease and desist all activities of this nature. We will contact you with further information or serve a subpoena if the situation warrants

No, Chris Jones has now put hidden children's porn inside with AGS, so that the FBI and others are hot on our trail.
- Oh great, I'm stuck in colonial times, tentacles are taking over the world, and now the toilets backing up.
- No, I mean it's really STUCK. Like adventure-game stuck.

Yeah, we all know what "Roger" means, really!  ;) Just run a steganography tool on his animation and you'll see all the famous under-18 forum members in a mud-wrestling competition. I'm not sure who won, though

As far as I can tell, there is now Electronic Decency Act,  there was a communication decency act, but it looks like it was struck down.  besides, these "acts" dont have codes to violate, they have articals.

I just googled for "Internet Protector Incorporated" and NOTHING came up. What, an internet protection company doesn't have a website? :P Yea, right. It's just probably some kind of religious/anti-porn spam to make you a better man ::).

I'm pretty sure that that letter violated the third paragraph in the seventh article of the Corny Prank and Spam Mails That aren't Funny-act.

Rincewind

That sounds very much like one of those
"Dear Sir, I'm Robert This-And-That the 3rd, and my father... Please deposit to my account..."-type of spam that's been cirkling around a lot recently. It's just that this one isn't begging for money...
It sounds like someone is trying to be funny on your behalf to me.

DGMacphee

Squinky,

I did a search for "Internet Protector Incorperated" and came up with nothing.

However, I did a search for "Internet Protector" and lo and behold it came up with software that prevents kids from accessing pornography.

My guess is that the company (Note the 'Incorperated' -- I doubt this a commercial enterprise would also be a a government regulartory body), sends spam to parents and the parents get worried and buy their software.

In other words, you're safe.

In fact, this person is also making false claims for commerical purposes and acting as a ficticious regulatory body, which is against the law too.

This person is cooking up a heap of trouble for themselves.

I'd report this e-mail to an ACTUAL regulatory body -- maybe they can trace the person down.

Now, time to go get me some pics of women with six boobs playing with goats!!!!

I googled for information on the Electronic Decency Act, and I couldn't find an article of any sort more recent than 1995.
And besides, considering that the bill would prohibit "the posting of pornographic material on a BBS" and basically internet porn altogether (both of which, of course, are legal with age verification).
Unless they decided to start enforcing it 8 years late, I think you're safe.
EDIT:Actually, I can't find any information even saying that the act passed. Does anyone know if it did?

DGMacphee

I did a search too and can't even find the actual act.

Nor can I find anything relating to Code 7.

They're full of shit!

I've found articles relating to the act, but nothing mentions code 7.....and it seems to be in great dispute and I'm not sure it even passed....

The thing I don't get about the e-mail is that at first it says I've been downloading illegal porn....which is crazy, then it says that pretty much all porn is illegal...okay...theit seems to go on to say that all internet traffic is illegal? who the? what the?

I guess the e-mail just scares me because it plays off of all my fears. being accused of something like this could screw up a guys life....

and anyway, as a dialup user, dosen't my ip change all the time?

juncmodule

What be this..."dial-up"...you speak of...

:P

Your IP remains basically the same regardless as to how you connect, I believe. It just rotates through a series of IP's. When an IP is banned from somewhere you pretty much have to ban the entire series.

I think that's how it works.

I think it is much more likely that this information made its way to you via cookies. So, kill your cookies and kill them often. Honestly there just isn't much to keep people from getting your email address. Blocking all cookies just makes websurfing rediculous. Also, it doesn't really matter because as soon as you hit a site they are probably digging through your personal info. As far as how they see you going to "porn" sites. Think pop ups. Pop ups can request cookies too. I'm sure while going to some "free" webhost that someone on here uses you had some porn popups.

oh yes, and I'm full of poo and don't know what I'm talking about... ;D

This is getting weird, I'm dumping my hotmail account....

DGMacphee

DON'T REPLY! (Obviously)

As Ackbar says, "It's a trap!!!"

What they do is ask for a reply to check if your account is still active.

Then they add your e-mail to a database.

Then they share these databases with other spam companies and flood your email addresses.

That is why you never click the 'Click here to be taken off our mailing lists' -- it never works.

Make sure you don't tick the box that says something like "Add me to the Hotmail members' directory".

It's more like the Hotmail spammers' directory.

Paranoia

hotmail had that ticked by default at one time, as soon as you opened the account you got a inbox full of crap >:(

Pumaman

It's worrying how many people have received these strange mails, so I've taken the precaution of automatically hiding everybody's e-mail address.

If you can see anyone's e-mail address anywhere on the forums, please inform me just in case I've missed anything.

This is just a temporary measure.

My best guess is that the script kiddies who hacked rode's forum came here, tried to hack the board but couldn't (because it's running the latest yabb), and so instead got pissed off and started sending nasty e-mails to all the members.

Anyway, all e-mail addresses are now protected.
