The game I'm working on (as yet unannounced as I'm waiting on a copy of photoshop so I can start making some decent screenshots) is sure to break a few records...

A Picture of a Page 3 Girl, a bag of pretzels and a squeegy are but three of the items in my character's inventory.

However, I'm pretty sure a Motorola V220 doesn't, nor does a packet of Prawn Cocktail crisps, or a Bowfinger DVD.

Any number of adventure games that let you collect an arbitrary amount of cash, the first ones that come to mind are Zak McKracken and Larry 1 (although it might cross maxint).

There was a Jojo.  In Monkey island II.  Jojo was a monkey you had to use as an inventory item.

James, this is a topic for things that HAVEN'T been inventory items,...yet. Jojo was an inv. item in MI2, as you said.

I'd like to thank everyone who contributed to this (anything but pointless) thread for giving me several ideas for inventory items in my next game.

And so that my post features something more constructive than bum-kissing, here are a few ideas of my own:

an omni-virus that can infect both computers and animals
a device that can magically make things heavier
paint to change the colors of other items
a tape recorder that can store a player's typed message to play back later
(possibly to convince an NPC that you're in a room when you're not)
a heatray gun to heat up objects
a freezeray to do the opposite (also can make walkable paths on bodies of water)
a device that can magnetize other items
shrinkray to make things tiny/huge

hope this helps people create more creative puzzles.

Quotea device that can magically make things heavier
Well, my game By the Sword will feature an antigravity generator, which I suppose could be used for that purpose...theoretically. But yeah, hasn't been used yet. ;)

Quotea freezeray to do the opposite (also can make walkable paths on bodies of water)
This is an awesome idea! You've just inspired me! Thank you!

Seriously, that is very original...there is a lake in front of you. Do you find a boat to sail across it? Find a life preserver to swim in it? Nope, you freeze the water to walk on top of it. That's really lateral thinking. ;D
