Features

Bucanneer II is an adventure game about Richard McRoch, an ex-Buccaneer turned merchant. In part I, we learned little tidbits about his life, his relation to Margareth and discovered a betrayal.

Now, in Buccaneer II, we learn the rest.

* A medium/full-length adventure game spanning over 5 game days.
* Completely digital soundtrack by Vel.
* 320 x 200 in 16 bit colours
* Using the by now familiar GUI from Proskrito, closely modelled after the one used in Fate Of Atlantis.
* A continuation of the tale begun with "Buccaneer". Learn more about Richard, Margareth and a myriad of other characters that populate Renaissance Amsterdam!
* Uses the awesome Rain/Snow plugin by Scorpiorus!
* Swordfighting (skipable). (being scripted by [ ... ])
* Fabulous character art by Regnum Eternum.

Vel

Great! Can't wait to play it!

magintz

I'm looking forward to more piratey mishaps with richard
When I was a little kid we had a sand box. It was a quicksand box. I was an only child... eventually.

remixor

Excellent!  I don't suppose you have any sort of projected release date for this?

Hobbes

I'm aiming for an early 2004 release. It'll probably take till Spring, though. What with work and all that taking up my time.  :-\

Squinky

I look forward to this game....

Thanks, Squinks. Finish Pirate Fry 2, though. ;)

Also, I've made a tutorial on how to draw a background like this. Back in the Critic's Lounge when I posted a picture from "Depths of Clearbay", someone asked for this.

Enjoy!

Edit:

Discuss what you would like to see happen in Buccaneer II here.

Guess who the dead man in the right of the picture is! :)

Hobbes

Thanks, Vel. :)

Help requested: Is there anyone out there who could make me a decent .ICO file for use with Buccaneer II? In Buccaneer I used the standard AGS icon, but for this one, I'm looking for something to make it a tad bit more special...

Mail your results to me at info@unosar.com... you'll get a notice in the Credits!

Hobbes

Darn, I thought: I'll hold this small competition!

Oh, well.

;)

Vel

Hobbes, why don't you get someone to make midis especially for B2?

Hobbes

I would love to have someone compose MIDI files for Buccaneer II... it's just something I haven't explored yet. But, if anyone is willing, send in something!

foz

I`d be interested in doing some midis for you.

Pm if you want to go over some details.

foz

Hobbes

Ok, Foz, I've PM'ed you. If anyone else wants to make music for the game, just contact me, I'd say.

Oh, and I've spent the afternoon doodling away...

It's Richard's bedroom! Guess his addiction... ;)

Vel

As ever, great work, hobbes.

Hobbes

*bump*

Updated the first post.

Errr... I notice only now that in each screenshot, Richard's profile is the same.. darnit, almost as if he's hiding the right side of his body!

Vel

My, hobbes, you do GREAT art! I cant wait to play this game.

Hobbes

Thanks, Vel.

As it is, I probably won't release any more screenshots until the demo/game is completed. Right now I'm in doubt whether or not I should release a demo... it would be a swell way to raise interest, but then again, the time spent developing the demo could also be used to develop the game.

Ah, well. I'll update this thread whenever something noteworthy occurs, and preview some material from time to time. :)

It's nice to know that there are people out there who are interested in this little project of mine!

Privateer Puddin'

make a demo, but thats not part of the game? :)

love the new screens

Hobbes

Thanks, Custa- errr... Privateer Puddin'. ;)

Making a demo which is not part of the game, I considered this. But then again, isn't that what Buccaneer 1 practically is?

Vel

Do not make a demo. It would just spoil it. Spend the time working on the game instead.

Privateer Puddin'

i guess it depends on the amount of time between the two games :)

Hobbes

No demo it is.... :)

Mwahahaha! I'll keep Richard tottering around on my own PC then until BucII is ready.

Meowster

Why didn't I ever see this here before?! This is awesome looking.

Also, Yufster, you can download "Buccaneer 1" from www.unosar.com, so you can get to know the characters and setting... :)

Hobbes

UPDATE: See the first post for details. :)

Hobbes

*bump*

I've updated the designer diary, the Discussion section and the Help Needed area.

Hobbes

Wahey, it's official!

There'll be action sequences in Buccaneer II. :)

Check the main page for more updates. :)

Privateer Puddin'

:D don't go OTT though, please ;)

adanzis

hobbes, are you still looking for people to help you with the storyline? - Alan

Vel

Hobbes, good to see you're making progress!

Hobbes

P'Pudding -> Nope... no worries, it'll be something you can work around (e.g. other dialog branch, puzzle). Also, it'll play a minor part in the overall game.

Adanzis -> At the moment: Nope. DaveGilbert has helped a lot, so that's mostly settled.

Vel -> I know. It took some doing on the motivational level.

Update: see the main page.

Help Requested:

I'll post it here as well... is there anyone in the community who'd be willing to draw several introduction screens for me? It will be still screens that tell Richard's recurring dream he'll have during the game.

I could draw them myself, but I'm not really that good on close-up drawing, etc.

Thanks!

Vel

You quoted me!
See you in court.

Just kidding. Great site though.

Vel

How 'bout a lil' ol' progress report?

Hobbes

Well, I think I can. Finally.

The thing is, I totally lost interest in Buccaneer 2. Lack of time, lack of inspiration, etc.

The goals were set, the entire game was planned, quite some artwork was done, but there was just so much still to do.

The job of doing everything yourself coupled with a real life became a tad bit too much for me.

However, I did try to pick up the pieces and move on quite a few times. However, I updated to a new AGS and then the FOA template didn't work properly anymore.

Instead of recoding all rooms and stuff, I decided to start anew.

Which is exactly what I have been busy with for the past few weeks. I'm also doing a different approach, I'm working on details and everything at the same time. Before I did the main stuff first and would focus on the details later.

Now, I'm having fun with the project for the first time in a long, long while. So, will it get finished? I sure hope so... Don't hold your breath though. I *am* working on it, which should be positive enough news....

...I hope.

SSH

Yay! Welcome back stuffed tiger!

Do you still want my help with a fight engine?

Hobbes

Gladly. :)

I've been thinking about it a lot and am quite stumped. I'll PM you one of these days about the details... :)

Drawing a map is a lot of work... Just to show there's really progress!

PS Visit the website for more Buc2 goodies. :)

Vel

Hey, that looks as good as ever!
And, of course, you are using the artwork you previously made, right?

Glad to hear you're back - hope to see this progressing really well!

Squinky

Glad to see your still on this. I kinda did the same thing with Fry2 (the starting over thing) so I know where your coming from....

Hey all,

It's been a long time again. Again. :)

However, I've been busy with Buccaneer 2. So, it's time to update this thread a little.

First, I've begun to publish a small blog at unosar.com with the latest screenshots and information. So instead of repeating myself, just surf over to www.unosar.com and read up there.

As can be seen, I've redrawn Sophia's Fate of Atlantis sprite to fit into Buccaneer 2. This finally makes it possible for Margareth to move around and about this time. :) I already have a new dialog on the first day ready between her and Richard...

Just wanted to let you all know that Buccaneer 2 is very much alive!

Vel

Glad to hear that! This looks even more promising than before.

PS: Check your messages ktnxbye._.

Regnum Eternum

Still looking for a cutscene still screen artist? :)

Hobbes

Actually, I am! :) If you're willing to help me out, please pm me about the details. :)

Hobbes

It's updated again!

I've cleaned out the first post so it's a bit more up to date.

So far I've planned it out the following way:

Summer 2005: Non-interactive demo.
Fall 2005: End of production phase/beginning the beta phase.
Winter 2005: Release of Buccaneer 2.

With the help of Regnum Eternum, the introduction is beginning to look really nice. I'm keeping it under wraps for the time being, but it's going to be somewhat similar to GK1's intro. Which also explains why Vel is composing a digital soundtrack somewhat inspired by GK1.

Recent coverage in the E-Zine revealed a new location, the docks. I've been actively drawing several more and since I started work on the game in february again, the room number is now up to 18. So, there's some definite progress. :)

Hobbes

Darth, my apologies for not only double-posting... but triple-posting. I know it's not allowed, but felt compelled to do so, to announce the following.

The rolling demo for Buccaneer 2 has been released! Two years after announcing the game, I've finally reached such a state that I'm willing to show some in-game material in the AGS engine to you all. It's approx 1m30s long. It showcases several locations, characters as well as a beautiful screen from the game's intro.

I hope you all enjoy this very sneak preview at what's to come before the year is out. :)

Or... alternatively, visit the first message in this thread. :)

Dave Gilbert

Darn spiffy, Hobbes!  And darn spiffy music, Vel.  Happy to see that this is still underway.

They are spaced out about a month apart anyway, so it's okay.

And I second what Dave said.  This game has been a long time in the making and I look forward to its release!  Keep it up.

DoorKnobHandle

Wow, very good work. This piece is filled with atmosphere, very good dialogues and everything... It's really impressive and I can't wait to play the full game.

Oh, and very good fighting engine... Oh, wait, I wrote it... :)

José Luiz

I've just seen the rolling demo...
This game will surely be very, very, very good!!!

.

Just playd trailer and... :o

Nice picture of richard in the middle of trailer. This dramatic scene whit richard and umm oo the woman whose name starts with M i guess is just simply great the animation the move directions all are like in real life. Can`t wait to play full version

Flop

I just want to say that I'm extremely excited about this project. I just played the first one and was awestruck by the story. Very impressive indeed (I made a comment if you're interested in my views about the game). I guess I just want to cheer you on, and say that I hope this game will retain the strong points of the first one, while improving on the weak points. Thanks.

cjhrules

Nice rolling demo!!! I liked the dialogs. Really looking forward to this game.
Keep up the good work!

deadsuperhero

Damn, that was good stuff. I especially liked the closeups of the main character. This looks like a professional-dare I say it-Commercial- team!
I can't wait.
The fediverse needs great indie game developers! Find me there!

Kweepa

Looking good!
I'd avoid having Richard call Margareth "Marge" - in my mind anyway that's too connected to the Simpsons. Perhaps "Maggie" - oh damn, that's the Simpsons too.
I love the map screen and the dark atmosphere of the whole thing.
Great (if somewhat derivative, graphically) main characters.
+++Anticipation level is high+++
Still waiting for Purity of the Surf II

Ubel

I just recently played Buccaneer 1 and enjoyed it. Nice graphics and clever dialogs. The rolling demo of B2 was awesome and I'm waiting for the full game. Good luck!
