well sorry for being late and stuff :(

ptp88 you are the winner, i hope you dont make a mess of being late and screwing up the date and stuff like i did :P
#2
oh and since i started the contest on sunday and we dont want to make that the regular day voting is of course not until sunday :P

my vote goes to ptp88

i like both songs, and i think both fit the theme very good, its just personal taste in this case ^^
#3
i like that one too, i think it sounds like as if in some dark future (imagine the future how it is shown in the early terminator movies) some soldiers have a hopeless mission that is about being unseen, maybe some stealth kills and stuff like that
#4
i talked with kabukbear, and if you want to participate you still can, you know the rules, take one hour and post the song until tomorrow :)
#5
ok i dont see other participants, until someone comes in in a few minutes with an excuse you are the winner with a nice song that fits what you described ^^
#6
Ok here is the theme:

Action movie score!
It can be electronic, it can be orchestral, it can be rocking and popping or whatever you want. But it has to be something Bruce Lee would square off to against Chuck Norris, or think about a highway chase in Lethal Weapon, or Indiana Jones running for his life, or Bruce Willis dodging an explosion while shooting bad guys, or some kind of battle song for a Final Fantasy game. If you can think of something that sounds slightly exciting or tense it maybe is fitting this contest ;)

Have Fun :)

Hi
Sorry, i couldnt make it for hoursong Saturday, so for this weekend its sunday ^^
(note to self: 6 pm gmt is 19:00 where i live - germany)

So i copy and pate from the other thread, with the slightly corrected dates for this hoursong tomorrow:

"What's an Hoursong competition?
The purpose of Hoursong is to encourage composers and test them under a trial of fire. In this activity your task is to make a song within a strict and very short deadline (i.e. one hour).

When will it take place?
This Hoursong session will take place on Sunday (but usually Saturday) at 6pm GMT. Participants will have an hour to make their song + 15 minutes to put in finishing touches (maybe mix) / upload.

How do I participate?
A theme is set by the previous hoursong's winner (that's me). It will be announced on IRC and here on Sunday. You can also contact me on IRC and partake earlier, if you can't make it on Saturday.

Why should I participate?
Because it's FUN!
The more the merrier, and it's great pactice for the ol' music-making skills.

Additional info:
- While it is not forbidden for the theme-setters to participate in the activity, their songs cannot be voted for (to prevent accusations of cheating and to discourage regular participation).
- Instead, theme-setters are encouraged to draw trophies for the contest's winners.
- Making your song from scratch is strongly encouraged. Cover songs will not be accepted. However, participants are allowed to use one (1) element maximum that has been used already by other artists (like a riff). Just don't steal a whole chorus or something like that.
- You cannot use stuff you've made earlier, because this competition is about making something new.

Camwhoring:
If you have Camtasia or Camtasia-esque software, it would be great to see your "Making of"! Or blog about it, or just open Notepad, do something! No twittering.

Uploading:

TerranRich's ShutUpload

Song formats:
Please use .ogg, .mp3 or MIDI. If a participant doesn't have time to convert the tune in either ogg or mp3, they are allowed to post it in whatever format they have, just make sure that the format can be played with either Windows Media Player or Winamp. This is to ensure that absolutely anyone can hear the tune.

Voting:
Just tell us your favourite tune. You don't have to enter to vote!
(If you want to tell us what you liked and disliked about all the entries, that would be super nice of you!)
The voting will end after a week.
Again, you don't have to enter to vote!

Please post here if you want to participate, if you´d like to start an hour sooner/later ect."

Ok so i hope nobody kills me for hosting it on Sunday, and i hope i did everything right ^^

Hi everybody!

My nickname is "karacho" as you can see ^^ (it is some strange german slang, saying something is happening with force or strong impact, cant describe it that good, for example if you say "he punched him full (or with) karacho" - if that was a german sentence it would make sense, trust me ;)
If i come across a community where that name is already chosen i go "sir_karacho" usually, but lucky me - "karacho" was still available here :D
If you want to keep it short you can call me "kara", i know it is a girls name in some countries, but that is what people call me if they want to keep it short, so i never had a problem with that.

So i am a 32 year old male from Germany. I am not some of those evil idiots from 70 years ago, and i can proof that by saying that the Indiana Jones trilogy (there is no 4th movie >8[ ) are my favourite movies.

My favourite stuff are movies and games. And even most of my favourite games are my favs, because they are cinematic, or have other stuff that somehow reminds me of movies, or are about storytelling. (Snatcher, Policenauts, Metal Gear (Solid), Resident Evil).

I played a lot of Lucasarts stuff the days back then (Full Throttle, Monkey Island, Indiana Jones), and some Sierra games too (Larry, Space Quest). I still havent played any Gabriel Knight, but from what i heared i have to play them. I could even like Phantasmagoria since it has movies and i like horror and stuff.

I am the kind of guy that always wants too much. I want to draw, so i go buy a drawing tut book, but forget drawing because i want to do music also, so i make music with my tools, and i want to tell a story, so i start one. All in all i want to be creative, and i know i can, but i have to focus.

Close to none drawing experience. Some experience making music with various software (mostly Reason 4, which is my fav of them, and yes its legal, i bought it) but i am still dont have much to show there, it is more working than talent. I also have some programming experience, but nothing like programming devices or graphic stuff, only logic operations and stuff like that. And just to try out i once wrote the intro of some (non-existant) weird animated animal copmovie in movie-script format, but even that intro is now lost because of hard drive failure.

So yeah i like movies, yeah i like games, yeah i have some programming knowledge, yeah i want to draw, yeah i want to make music (and own the tools to make it), yeah i want to tell a story.

Makes me a perfect candidate to focus all this stuff into doing some cinematic adventure (like Snatcher or Policenauts).

Oh and as you can see, yeah i am also the kind of guy that can dig into a thing (like simply introducing myself) and then realises all of a sudden how much time has gone by since i started.

So greetings to everyone :)

Hi Densming, just wanted to thank you too for making those videos. I mean reading manuals and stuff is always good, but seeing how everything is put together in such a series of videos presents everything so much clearer.

Keep up the good work! :)

I bought it, and always liking games that feel cinematic like the Kojima stuff, making Metal Gear (Solid) my favourite games of all time, and also including games that feel more like actionmovies like Uncharted - it was a really exciting experience for me.

But it is something you cant really judge from game standards. It could loose horrible from that point of view, but as an interactive movie experience - it is nothing less then awesome. I mean it gets really emotional some times, the music supports that in a good way, the story is emotional on itself, and you have to make difficult decisions, and the action sequences are exciting.
It is really like you are drawn into a movie that you can influence.

I have to say the story has some flaws in not explaining everything. Some of that is minor and takes a second to figure out, and some of that just isnt explained, but not completely illogical, so it still works.

But beside those flaws, it was the most emotional involving experience i ever had from a game or a movie. There is one specific scene, i still get wet eyes by just remembering it. I am not kidding. And i think i always will get wet eyes when i think back of that scene.

MAJOR SPOILERS!
Spoiler
In my first playthrough, Ethan took the poison, he was a good guy, not killing the dealer, but doing everything to save his son. He then broke down because he couldnt find him - making the move of taking the poison useless. Madison then called with the adress. Ethan saved his son, told him that he loves him, ready to die, and then the music kicks in and he didnt die.
[close]

I already played through it three times, and there are still some things i want to try out. But that is just me being a huge fan of such cinematic experiences.

It would be nice if gamers deliberately boycotted Activision.

I am sure many do.
Before i go on i have to say: I am no Kings Quest Fan, and didnt even know about the project until those horrible news went by.
Reading those news just made me rage.
I mean yeah, gamers buy hype games and franchises go down all the way and the whole industry is making mistakes that are very ugly. Thats money making and most of it is the gamers fault, it is sad, but what can you do?
Then there are always those law-wars between companies, again money is power and they are fighing about everything they can. Alos sad, cant do anythign about it.

But killing of a dedicated project fans did to support a franchise just because ... because of nothing, really there is no reason behind killing of the work of 8 years of fans. Imagine Star Trek would go like that.

That just crossed a line. Activision is officially not just moneymaking, they are evil. I mean, really, there was no reason to do that kind of move. I read those news and posted a thread on every forum i am active. I dont know if that helps, but i made sure many people know whats happening. Most people agree, a good part of them is really angry at activision and said they wont buy again from them (including me).

Enough is enough, i will never again by a product that generates money for Activision.
Everybody that buys from them ever again can say in ten years "You know the time where there existed other games than five Call of Dutys a year? Yeah i was one of those guys that still bought products from Activision to shape the future we have now"

I can not get angry at people that just want to play a game they waited for or something. But think about it, do you want that? Do you really want to give money to people that act like they are the bad guys of a completely shallow actionmovie?

I still hope in between counting their money and laughing maniacally about how cool it is to behave like James Bond villians those Activision guys read forums and rethink what they just did.

Hi,
i want to make an japanese style Adventure like Policenauts. Is that possible with AGS?

If you dont know what that means, here is the deal:

You dont have a sprite to walk around. What you see is sometimes a picture of what the charakter sees, and sometimes a picture of the scene that can include the charakter too. It is a little bit like if you progress through a comic book, and has a very cinematic feel to it if done right.

You dont have a menu bar with general options like "look, take, push" or stuff like that. If you click on the picture, and you found something you can interact with, a context menu appears. That menu has options that are made for exactly that object you clicked on only. For example you click on your phone and then a menu comes up saying "look" (which gives a description of the phone) and "call Freddy" (where you call Freddy, then talk to him via multiple choice). If i have done something, maybe options dissapear, or new options for certain objects appear.
Basically it is just getting rid of "normal" options that adventures usually have, and making the game nothing else then multiple choice dialogues - where the dialogues also can trigger every stuff you need to run an adventure (changing room and inventory, ... everything), and are not dialogues, but actions you do. Would also be nice if those dialogue options could appear right next to the clicked objects and not just at the bottom of the screen.

What i also want to include would be the simple shooting game that is also in Policenauts. Basically it is just some sprite running around that you can click on to shoot it. Over time the sprite will shoot back and can kill you if you are not fast enough. And you have to reaload.
Dont know if it is possible to assign some scripting action to the second mouse button, but if that is not possible i think that could be solved by making an interactive object that just says "reaload" if you click on it.

If you still dont know what i am talking about, here is a youtube link that spoilers basically nothing from Policenauts in case you want to play it some time. In the beginning you can see the player clicking aroudn because he searches some guy, and most of the time "look" is the only option. At 0.27 he gets a multiple choice box, and around 0.48 the shooting game begins.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jbR_XfAd2A&feature=PlayList&p=A3EBB748FDB80698&index=3

So what is important to me is the following:
- Is it just overall possible to do this, including the shooting minigame?
- If i can just make my game using multiple choice dialogue all the time, is it possible to show a box with those options next to the object?
- Can i assign commands to the second mouse button?
- Can i change the cursor appearence via script (when i call the shooting minigame)?

Ok my little question of "is it possible?" just got much more detailed than i inteded it to be, dont kill me for that. :)
