Spongebob doesn't need an explanation.
#2
Sounds fun. How should be handled who's next? First come, first serve?
#3
Last round, I had a great idea immediately, but couldn't find the time. Now it looks like I'm gonna have some time, but I guess I have to give some thought to the theme before I can sign up...
#4
Doesn't need to be that long... 2108 would already qualify.
#5
I think the elbows look a bit stiff in the walkcycle, no?

Hmm, statistics won't support any of our improvement theories:

July 6 - July 17 (11 days open) Jump'n'run: sprite + bg, 2 entries
June 8 - June 27 (19 days open) Behind the Mask: sprite only, 2 entries
May 22 - June 3 (12 days open) Re-Animation: sprite + bg, 1 entry
May 8 - 21 (13 days open) Beam Me Up Scotty: sprite + bg, 6 entries
April 20 - May 1 (11 days open) Fight! Fight! Fight!: sprite only, 5 entries
April 6 - 17 April (11 days open) Kill the Bunny: sprite only, 6 entries

... and before that there was something like a 2 month hiatus with an open competition (sprite only) having no more than a single entry.

Maybe it really is the summer... or some themes are just more suitable than others.

This competitions really should be longer... maybe in a monthly format or something?

What about the second question? There where a lot of Machines that used overlays (Game&Watch, Vectrex, many 70s arcade games), though they weren't part of the software.
Or as another example something like "this is based on the original pong hardware, so it's supposed to have paddles as input device, but instead we use the mouse wheel"?

How serious should we take micromanagement such as memory constrains and the like? For Example, can a NES-Imitation get disqualified / regarded inferior if it displays more than 4 sprites without flickering?
#9
Does it have to imitate a real existing machine, or is it also OK to define some specs that would have been doable in the mid-80s?

And can we use software renditions of would-be hardware? Like we have blocky sprites but a beautiful hi-res background that always stays the same cause we say it would really be an overlay?

Hmm, i guess it's about time to close this competition... sorry, Questionable.

1st place goes to matti, I really liked the idea of the mask being the only part thats NO mask. Also, i dig the animation for the arms.
2nd place is Lionmonkey, also a very creative, though pretty violent, idea (not much more violent than the original Prince of Persia, thats true ;) ).

Maybe I'll get around to making tropies this weekend...

How about your promise, Questionable? Should we wait?
#12
About two days left...
#13
Nice entry. I hope this time we get to see some more competition than the last round...

Rules:
A sprite is supplied, with a theme.
Participants must use the given sprite for their animation
Each competition will last 11 days
The starter of each competition will decide on the winner.
The winner, who will decide on the next competition's theme, must also supply a sprite.

Theme: Behind the Mask.
The winner of the last competition is to create the next one, right? Since I'm only a beginner at creating sprites, i'll take my masked guy a few of you may know from C&C as a basis:

The task is to unmask him in a creative way, no matter if the way of unmasking or what's behind the mask is creative.

Eleven days... then the deadline should be around the 19th... I don't know what time zone to take as basis.

1st of one, yay. Guess everyone else is out enjoying the summer sun... here, if it isn't raining, it's awfully muggy.
#16
Hmm, the ones I know are Animake (http://www.cyberlab-gmbh.de/index_e.html) and Bannershop. Animake is free for non-commercial use, Bannershop is Shareware.

Alright, here's the first entry:

Animation is a little choppy, and after i finished i noticed that my moon doesn't change it's shape... Anyway, guess i shouldn't be too ambitious since this is my first entry for a competition here ever.

Besides if it's a window, the road goes through the building.

The Rumpus Room / Re: How did you find AGS?

I think I read in a magazine about Maniac Mansion Deluxe. Of course i went to download it immediately and thus eventually found out about AGS...

Critics' Lounge / Re: First sprite...

For the most time i used Paint.NET, although there were some operations (like moving around certain parts of the sprite) which i found not very convenient to do with that program, so i switched to the regular Windows Paint program for them.
