Yeah, I kind of understand the issue with the "clap" thing. It was distracting, and kind of filled up the screen with something that wasn't REALLY necessary.

So I agree with what is being suggested... when someone uses the "trigger" by typing "*clap*", instead of showing up in the chat area on screen (i.e. the awards chatroom), it is only processed by the...system-management room(?), which can maybe create the sound effect (out of a random pool of clap sound effects, for variety ;D), and maybe a clap animation or something. Also the addition of boos! :D

I've been suckered into signing up for the Borg Broadcasting Corporation! :o
Spoiler

I scored lower than average for everything, most of all in my sense of anger, but least of all in my desire to punish.
The punish questions were weird, so I just assumed it meant that if I was in a position of power or authority where it would be my job, and answered them like that.

I scored medium (i.e. similar to everyone else) for disgust in boundary offences and distribution offences, and medium for avoidance in boundary issues- I had chosen not avoid at all for most of the answers.

Weird test.

I have seen the movie recently, but have no idea what it is.

Also, what do people mean when you say "Googling it"? I mean, would
"giant ball" pool airbag cocaine "red car" blonde movie

Really yield results? Because it doesn't seem to. Or is it just a case of recognising an actor and then googling some of those things?

"Interactive Story" would be a somewhat troublesome name to use, because it is already in use for something else...those....errr......experiences (I guess you can't always call them games), where you have a story going (usually through video or animation or something), and then it stops at certain points, requiring you to click, or maybe make a story-forking dialogue choice or something...my father got me two of those (I think they were some Batman and some Aquaman story thingos) when I was a kid and they were....somewhat disappointing for me :D.

I would also say that the graphics don't REALLY have anything to do with the story, although I agree with Scavvy on that point that people have a cut-off point (usually dictated by what era they grew up in :D). I enjoy good VGA pixel-art in many games, but...stuff older than that (like some of the AGI games that were made), are....troublesome for me to plod through, although I can appreciate the artwork.

I would suspect that the sort of people who made those comments would probably be...fairly young (again going with the graphical cut-off thing). Possibly having parents who are victim to (or are victims themselves to) the idea that "game" means "something for a young person to play"- while I am pretty sure you'd want to be....I dunno...at least a late teenager to properly and fully enjoy Dave's games?

Many (non-advanture) games back when didn't focus on the story at all, thus the classification was kinda important. I am happy that most genres (I've even seen storyish racers :D) today take that lesson from adventure games- so I am happy when I see the "adventure" label attached to such stuff...it means (if it was properly applied), I am in for a more immersive experience.
I just thought of something....Can someone think of an adventure game that WASN'T story driven? Or to put it better, one where the story was non-existent, or played no significant part (like those old platformers that may have had some words in the manual about the backstory, but never really needed to do more than that)?

As a separate point to most of this thread, I find it sad that 2D art has somewhat fallen out of favour as part of the "new technology craze" in games, except for in niche markets, especially now that mobile phones are getting more and more powerful so that they will soon not need to be restricted to it. There is vectory/flash type art, but that is about it,  and that most of the time seems to be used as an excuse to make "easy" art that can be quickly animated. It doesn't have to be "pixel-art" either, of course- it would've been nice to see 2D art that takes advantage of or advances along with technology (like how Trine was, although I think it used 3D graphics)- but I guess most graphics cards are optimised for 3D graphics? I brought this up in a conversation I had with Nemo in IRC, comparing it to the stylistic use of black and white film in movies still used today.

EDIT: DAMNATION, HELL AND MAJOR IRRITATION! It seems I have severely atrophied as a writer...I keep using the exact same phrases again and again, and the same words several times, even sometimes within the same sentence :(. I keep going back and edited out an "although" and replacing it with something else, and even after all these years, WHY ARE MY ELLIPSES STILL SO NUMEROUS?!
...Sorry (DAMN!), had to vent.

General Discussion / Re: Tintin movie
Tue 01/11/2011 21:23:26
I've not read any of the Tintin comics (I was always more of a fan of Asterix, which was in the competing stack), but I thought it was good fun. I did get excited Indy style when he got on the sidecar :D. I was probably a bit tired beforehand anyhow, but I started getting a bit sleepy and waiting for it to finish near the end.

I don't know what happens in the comics, I guess they have it there, but it was a bit jarring to have "cartoon" characters shooting and waving guns at each other. I guess I am not used to that.

But yeah, fun stuff!

I see nothing wrong with referencing the bluecup to show your "roots", but it might be confusing to use the bluecup as is, because someone may possibly think it is AGS or done by CJ or something.

Instead, an idea is to use the bluecup along with something else. Since you call yourself "Weggieware Games", maybe you can show carrots and leafy vegetables pouring out of a tilted bluecup?

You would do better linking to the games page on AGS rather than to the download directly:
Beacon

The game is by Pinback, who hasn't visited since July, but I remember being a relatively enthusiastic game developer. You should definitely try PMing him, or emailing him if that fails (you can do both through his profile which I've linked). I'm sure he'd appreciate his game being translated to more than 1 language.
#1153
Yes, I believe it would be classified as medium length.

I seem to remember a couple years ago someone uploaded (or linked?) some pretty large sized posters (some of which seemed to be the same image as on the box-art, but without the borders and stickers and warnings and stuff) of LucasArts games.

I saved MI1, MI2, Day of the Tentacle (one parodying Star Wars and another basically seeming like cleaned up cover art, but in SVG format), Fate of Atlantis, and Sam 'n Max.

Whatever you want, I can upload, just tell me. I'd do them all, but they're pretty big, and my net isn't always at its best...each is around 15-20Mb, and they start around 4724x6301...except the svg.

I have problems working on my game most of the time. :D

Damn you, abstauber! Why couldn't you have linked that earlier today so I could've alleviated some boredom at work?

I had actually gotten to that website many times when googling for game screenshots, but I never bothered to read through it...will do now, I guess.

Having costrip and ScummRev, and having all the LucasArts adventure games (except Labyrinth...somebody get me a working Labyrinth :(), I already had access to this, and it made me thing that maybe I should do something similar.

It also reminded me how I have no idea what Loom version I have, with the CD with the voice acting, but also with the close-up images and the 256 colours.

If you have pick-up, then you shouldn't use the open hand. Otherwise, I guess it works.

However, you should clearly mark (with a red pixel?) which part of the hand you have to click over the object.

If you choose the centre of the palm, it could get annoying, especially for small objects, because it hides what the object is.

You could have the active area of the mouse cursor the index finger, but then in that case.....you might as well be using the pointed hand in the first place.

It's a vicious circle :P.

General Discussion / Re: Merlin!

I'm not sure they actually gave a specific timeframe for the events of the show, and people have placed Arthur all over the middle ages, so I don't think that is really all that much of an issue.

However, the wiki page says that it was influenced by Smallville....which, doesn't really improve my chances of watching it. :P
