I just wish gaits worked like that.

I have a friend called Gregg (who I once saw in some porn!!! He claims it wasn't him, but we all know better) with a particularly dapper gait, and I REALLY wish it'd rub off on me... oh well...

On the subject of that Gay Bishop, can I just say:

Rowan Williams is totally l33t (to use the local parlence)

I was a fan of his when he was arch Bish of Wales (he confirmed me you know!) and he's the best thing to happen to the C.O.E for about 2003 years.

He's just such a NICE man, AND CLEVER!!!! What kind of crazy cmbination of things is that to occur in a religious thingamybob?!?!?!

yes, it's the latest issue...

when I was in London, I saw a copy of Issue 50 of PCGamer in a news agents, right at the front of the magazine rack,with a picture of Bladerunner the game on the front as though it was still not only valid, but really exciting and cutting edge. I pondered buying it as a joke, but then decided that it wasn't really worth it.

Maybe I should have checked to see if it was one that I'd had a letter printed in...

Interestingly, while I had a seriese of letter printed as Captain Mostly(along side a "letter of the month" during one of the monthes where there was no letter-of-the-month prize grrrrr) and perhaps a couple under my real name, my ultra-catholic friend had one printed as Captain Muchly, and was terribly pleased with himself. I forget what his was about...

Ok. It's not very interesting. Get off my case!

I have to confess that whilst I am gay (and indeed, I have a lovely and startlingly camp boyfriend) I'm still pretty homophobic. Particularly when I get gay stuards on the train. It's the fingernails that piss me off. And eye-brow plucking! What's with that!!?!?!?!

Anyway, campness (limp wrists etc) is something I have observed as being kind of like accents. You spend a lot of time around people who act camp, and you start acting camp. Much as I don't like being seen as a gay man, instead of just a man, I'm always catching myself acting gaywise simply because I spent some time around "Beller" last night.

I think the most worrying thing about the great majority of homosexuals I know is a stunning propensity towards astounding shallowness. Sure, I've got loads of gay friends who are perfectly normal and sensible. But for every straight acting bloke ("straight acting" har har har. What a lovely and demening phrase) I meet, there are litterally swarms of pop-princesses milling about being GENUINLY concerned that someone else is waring the same trousers as them. Oh lordy lordy!

Finally, as a responce to Jimi:
Gay men are WAAAAAY more concerned about what people think of them than lesbians. It's just the people they're concerned about are different to the people normal folks are concerned about.

General Discussion / pleughburg in PC gamer...
Sat 12/07/2003 14:36:44
I'm sure someone else has already spotted this and made a thread, but I can't find it.

I was very impressed to see UK PCGamer have a whole box in one of the articles devoted to Plugheburge: Dark ages!!! Well done gaspop.

If only they'd mentioned AGS...

I wonder if this'll reslut in a newbie boom? Probably not.

I've not seen my mum as an inventory item.

Then of course you could have a pointless thread asking people to list everything in the universe ever, (excluding only a relativly MINUTE numer of arbitrary objects) as an inventory item...

Would that be a paradox?

General Discussion / a game for JULY
Sun 06/07/2003 18:57:52
how do the GAME OF THE MONTH's get picked these days anyway...  I already played the uncertainty thingy, so what's hot for the summer? Maybe I'm just being impatient, but it'd BETTER be something I've not played yet (and something I've not played yet wich ISN'T "Mika's Surreal Dream", because there's a REAAAAL good reason I've not played that yet. No offence to whoeveritwas that made it... the first few are always traumatic).

I just went back to this today at my parent's house. I got 233million and something points and it was entirly fair. I am VERY pleased with the balancing of this game...

my mum keeps a kryptic post-it-note next to the computer with such things as "p.creep -> Pot Cab" written on it... It SEEMS to be helping, but she still complains of it being confusing (although this isn't ENTIRLY my fault, as her notes are more than a little inconsistant)...
#410
you're gonna have to speak more sence than that if I'm to tell you where you're going wrong...    ;)

I fear any man who can produce so much code, but STILL know it well enough to be able to implement upgrades so swiftly... he must have the code-commenting skills that we Computer Students aspire to with such entusement (but can never really be bothered to try and develop) !!!

it's REALLY easy when you know how... I'm afraid I've got all the cross polinations lazer-burned into my face from programming the thing! This is another reason it's good to get an idea of how long everyone else takes to do it.

TRUST me though, for you points junkies, the later vegetables make beating the chapters way more than worth while...

oh, hang on... ACTUALLY I've not been able to up-load the version with all the re-calebrated and re-balanced point allocations, so in fact the higher up plants aren't as tasty as you'd like... although it's still well worth doing for the sence of satisfaction you'll recieve when you reach FREE PLAY and the glory of the Flytato and Flycumber!!!!

OOPS! I just found Strcomp() in the instructions!!

You can delete this thread if you please as it turns out it was a stupid question!

My apologies!

Advanced Technical Forum / checking strings...
Wed 02/07/2003 15:00:38
why is it that the code:

string KNARKNAR;
KNARKNAR = "fufu";
if(KNARKNAR == "fufu")
{
Display("POOPOO");
}

never prints the word POOPOO...
I can't get an if statement to read what's in a string variable properly! What am I doing wrong?!?! WHA WHA WHA!

I know! the practace mode is horrible! This is one of the things I REALLY didn't want to release the game with.

As I've said, there are a umber of things that I desperatly wanted to fix befor releasing this game, but I couldn't (otherwise the game would be months and months late!)

I'm glad someone's beaten chapter 1! I was really concerned that people would give up before they managed even that! Chapter 2 is even more tricky though!!! GOOD LUCK!!!

I WOULD like to remind people that even though this is a Beta version of the game, PLEASE play it. It will be AGES before I can get a totally cleaned up version released, but the current version is ENTIRLY playable and I DESPERATLY crave your feedback (on issues like balance of point-awarding etc)...

the more (reasonable) observations you make, the fewer updates I'll have to make, and I don't want to be making an update every other day like I did for VPXT 1 again!

That said: get comfortable with the first game before moving on to this one. VPXT2 is a LOT less forgiving!

you could knock up a load of extra GUI's that appear when you entercombat... Then you could pretty much rig it so combat could work any way you wanted (although first person shooting would have to suffer limited movement).

AGS (like pretty much all programming languages) is terrifyingly flexible, and with a little imagination you could do whatever you want. The only problem is that for every minute of imagination you put into the game design, you'll have to spend around 5 hours programming...

What kind of combat would you like best? It's not likely that you'll be able (or perhaps willing to spend enough time to) achieve it precicely. But you can be sure it'll be possible to wack together a stripped down version of it (given enough time and dedication). Are there any games you want to mimick? Maybe you should come up with an entirly new system of combat (it's really not hard to dream up a new aproach to something! Why not give it a go? The worst that can happen is that it's wrong and you don't implement it...)
#417
The only easy-to-script combat possilbe in AGS is the patented Larry Vales Boxing system. You could make it so that weapons were inventory objects, and by right-clicking with one active you trigger a different power than if you left click with it...

just a suggestion...

EDIT:
Sorry, I've assumed that by "a game" you meant "an AGS game"... I now see this might not be the case...

Kevin is my house mate, who is desperate to steal my Vegetable kudos (although he told me how to spell kudos, so I guess I owe him a LITTLE bit)...
#419
many thanks to all of you!

The chapters are meant to take you a little while to beat (indeed, only really hardcore players ought to be able to unlock all the vegetables)

There SHOULD be an explanation of how to go up chapters in the readme file...

I DO want everyone to keep in mind that this is only a beta version, and there will be balancing issues (and possible bugs) that I'll have to fix...

Even so, thanks to everyone who's said nice things! (and thanks for the code hint!)

DUNGEON MASTER IS THE BEST COMPUTER ROLE PLAYING GAME EVER MADE:        F A C T

No. You CAN'T dispute it. Oh yeah, sure, you THINK you can. But you ACTUALLY can't. NO!! YOU CAN'T!

Nope. Don't even try. You are deluding yourself.

Although eye of the beholder 1&2 are worth a look... I guess the third one's not ALL bad either...

Kevin says: "Bard's tale". But then he's never played Dungeon Master... (which is also perhaps the bleakest game ever made as well... Carrying the corpses of your fallen friends in the failing light of your only remaining torch, chased by undead spirits, only to die by stumbling blindly into a pit... well *I* thought it was bleak...)
