General Discussion / Something trippy ....
Thu 24/07/2003 19:17:35
I stumbled across this ... thought some of y'all might get a kick out of it!  (It's too big to put into the actual window)

Trippy Image

Happy viewing!

I've used this one before.  I have it so that when you open a door the room brightens up.  What I did was put in multiple (2) background images, not animated, and upon the action of opening the door I run a script:

SetBackgroundFrame(X)

(X) being whatever background frame you wish to use!  So if you put in two frames, 1 with the unaffected object, and 1 with the affected object, you can just switch between the two.

Hope that helps!

Oh, and another thing I do while scripting ('cause I'm still pretty new to scripting) is I just start typing in something that I want ...  For instance.  If I wanted to set the background frame I'll start typing SET and then I check the autofill stuff it offers.  I've often found what I was looking for without having to look through all the documentations/posts/etc.

Ahhh ... well that's not very obvious.  ???

Maybe it would be better to have something like I suggested or even just make it so you can manually enter the number rather than having the sprite manager pop up like it does.  So you could just select the field and enter a number.  And the little button could be used to access the Sprite Manager (like it functions now).

Just in case anybody cares ...

I figured it out.

You just have to set the Player Character's Talking Color to set what color is used here in the Characters Section.

I think it would be nice to have the ability to remove a background image from the GUI.

Right now if you select to use a background image in a GUI you can't revert to having no background.  The only way I've found to do it is to duplicate a sprite and select it as the background, then delete that sprite from the Sprite Manager, then double-click (in the GUI properties window) the background image option.  It gives an error then loads the sprite manager to select a background, then I hit escape and I'm back to (none) in the background slot.  So I suggest something like this:

When you click on the little box with an X (the Xbox?) it would just clear out the background for the GUI.

Sorry if this has already been mentioned.

Cheers,

Uhhh ... yeah.  Except this is not a clickable window.
The only Properties for this GUI (text window) are:
1) Background Color
2) Background Image
3) Foreground Color

Foreground color changes the mouseOver color, but the mouseOut color is staying white.  I have found that if I click on the border pieces there is a way to select font and font color ... I'm testing to see if that will effect it.

I am using the text window 'cause the clickable ones don't expand right to surround the text and I want to put the borders around the box.

Okay ... I've decided to tackle dialog trees.  I've got it licked!  I get how it works and I've even gotten a good handle of the scripting involved!  Then I got stuck 'cause I didn't like the fact that the dialog showed up in that big black box at the bottom of the screen.  Well I figured that out but now I'm stumped ...

How can I change the Text/Font that is used for Dialogs.  I would like to select the font that is used and also edit the colors.  I've found that I can change the mouseOver color by editing the forground color for the GUI I use for the dialogs, but how about the initial color.  It's defaulting to white and I want it black.

Thanks and I'm sorry if this falls under the RTFM clause ... I couldn't find it in there!

Beginners' Technical Questions / Re:320X200

Mike

Are you referring to when you test the game?  If so, check the 'Setup Game' under the File menu.  I've had this problem before where the preferences were set to 320x200 even though I'm designing at the higher resolution.

Hope that helps!

Glad you're okay!

Terrorists are cowardly bastards.  I hope you're able to enjoy mittens anyway!  Don't let a bunch of cowards ruin your life ... go on with everything as normal.

We're here for you man!

I saw Lewis Black at a local comedy club around here ... for the life of me I can't remember the name of it.  It was in Royal Oak Michigan.  That fellow was eff-you-en-en-why!!

Glad to hear that you're (all) okay.

I could give this same advice to people too!  I have made the trip from Michigan (where I live) to Florida (where my parents live) so many times and many times I've driven it tired.  It's very dangerous!  It's a 20 hour drive (the way I drive at least ... fast) and by the end you're so tired you think you're seeing things!!

We always try to keep one person awake with the driver!!  That's the most important thing!  But usually I'm the driver, and usually everybody else is asleep.  But then again, I hardly ever sleep so perhaps that's okay :)

anyway ...

Glad nobody was seriously hurt!

SSH - No!!!  There are THREE types of people in this world.  Those who can count and those who can't.

I think both styles  are acceptable.  I don't have a problem using one or the other,  I just perfer the old-old-school stylings of the godfater of adventure games, Sierra.

Can't we all just get along???

dm

I haven't played too many of LEC's games.

I would have to say I preferred Sierra's style.

Actually I preferred the really old style where you didn't use the mouse.  I liked typing in commands and using the keyboard to navigate.  There was a certain magic involved with it.

I didn't like how easy it was to die, but that just added to the challenge.

Hey, that's just my opinion!

I should post the same reply I did in Panda's post ...

Don't disappear from these forums for the wrong reasons.  If everybody who hasn't contributed a full game were to stop posting here it would cease to be an online 'community' like it has become.  It'd be 5 people bouncing messages back and forth ... where's the fun (convenience) of that?

I like knowing that when I post something there are enough people here that I will get a reply.  If everybody decides to stop posting just to save bandwidth this community will fall.

Ex:  I posted some of my Star Wars pixel art on the forums at theforce.net and only like 6 people replied to it.  I've stopped checking it.  There just weren't enough people looking/replying to make it worth my while ... that same thing'll happen here if everybody stops posting just because some people complain about people posting too much.

EDIT - Hey, I just noticed, we have the same last name!

Panda

I understand what you mean!

I'm currently working on 2 games, both of which I fully intend on finishing.  But I'm working on them in my own time (when I have the free time) and I'm in no real hurry to finish them.  They aren't my life (though I am passionate about them) but I'm not going to rush them, and lower the quality, just to contribute to the community.

However, I'm going to continue posting on these boards (even though I've contributed no full games) because I enjoy posting on these boards.  That's the nature of it being a 'community'.

If you've decided to disappear for a bit (because you truely feel it's necessary) power to you, but if you've made this decision because you feel like you're being chased off I would encourage you to stick around.

That's just my two cents!
