Messages - Darth Mandarb

I, too, have been contemplating a break (from the General Discussion forum at least).

Good to know others are sick of the useless debating and bickering.

[humor]
But what do I know ... being a newbie and all?  ;D

I really like this game!  The graphics and animations are excellent!  I thoroughly enjoyed talking to the highway(w0)man.

The snake was just 'darling' ....

Keep up the good work!

That's really good.  The music rocks!

During the intro the graphics (such as Special Thanks to ... etc.) were showing up with the pink backgrounds (I'm guessing they were supposed to be transparent?)

The character is big and well detailed *no comment about walk cycle*

This game is one of the best I've tested so far.

Critics' Lounge / Sprite Advice ...
Wed 16/07/2003 07:43:25
Okay ... I wasn't going to post these, 'cause they're part of a game I'm working on which isn't near completion.  I have been working on this game for a few months and I decided last week to completely change the style/feel of the game.  (Some of you might remember the game from Games In Production forum a few months ago)

The game isn't really near completion but I wanted to get some advice/comments/critiques on these.

I'll post a few at a time:

Luke Skywalker - Return of the Jedi

Han Solo - A New Hope

Stormtrooper - All 3 Movies

Darth Vader - All 3 Movies

I decided to change style and do the game in the style of old Nintendo RPG's but with an Adventure Game interface.  So the characters look like old school sprites from RPGs but the game functions like a Space Quest.  Haven't decided about the background look/feel yet.  Any suggestions?

I also have Boba Fett, Chewbacca, a Gammorian Guard, Jabba the Hutt, and Yoda completed so far.

Let me know what you think of these and if you want to see more.

In my opinion, you're off to a great start!  But then again, like me, you're almost twice the age of most of the members of this forum :) So I don't think the complaints were leveled at you.

I don't think the 'vets' on these boards mind posting about games/productions/tech ?s ... I think the drama is more pointed towards those that post random meaningless crap just to up their post count so they're no longer considered 'newbs'... that's all.

I feel like I've been posting here forever and I have only 157 posts.  I tend to bump heads with some of the vets but I respect the seniority and I don't start threads for no reason.

Stick with what you've been doing ... I see nothing wrong with it!

And please keep me posted on your game.  I'd really like to see my name in the credits of a completed game :)  Even if in just the small part that I helped!!

I don't know if I'm pleased with this or not ... but I had some free-time.

With your design:

Hope you like it!

I changed it a bit (hope you don't mind)

General Discussion / Hardly the last ....

I don't totally disagree with this topic.

I do however, being what you would consider a 'newbie', find that defensive attitudes like that are going to scare off a lot of new users.

While that might be what you want, because they'll post less, this community would be nothing with only 10 or 12 veterans using it.  I wouldn't even call it a community then.

Whether you like it or not threads like this aren't going to solve this issue.  Most of the people who join this board are 14-17 year olds who are going to act like 14-17 year olds.  When you start threads like this you'll just light a fire under their butts and they'll do whatever they want because, in the end, you can't stop them.

I often feel like speaking out when somebody on here types something I disagree with but a vast majority of the time I don't bother because I know full well that it won't make a difference and won't solve a thing.  So why bother?  VERY rarely will you ever find somebody saying "Well I disagreed with you at first ... but you know what?  You're right!  What a change of heart I've had"

Do any of you honestly and truthfully believe that by saying "Stop" that it's actually going to work?  I don't mean that last statement to be antagonistic ... I'm serious.  I really want to know if anybody thinks this'll work.

Did you guys realize that if you take Yufster and spell it backwards you get Retsfuy ... how can you possibly HATE that??

Tell me!!

General Discussion / Re:Yufster LOVE Thread

I've found nearly every topic in the General Discussion forum eventually turns hypocritical and childish.  I don't know why anybody would expect anything less.

Nuthin' but love Yufster ... stay strong sister!

I got it to work this time ...

That's pretty clever.

I'm assuming you meant to put 03 first :)
(The only reason they weren't working is because you used .jpg instead of .JPG)

Beverly looking at the beautiful pond that includes one of the first puzzles (and a nice in game nod to The Ring)

Showing the talking animation...

And this is Beverly vs. her werecat shape.

I like your character.  Very nice.  And I like where the backgrounds are headed.  The GUI looks nice too.  Keep it up and let us know when/if we can get a playable demo!

I've always known the pencil tool and not the brush for pixel art.

[sarcasm]
But sure, everybody should know to change interpolation from Bicubic to Nearest Neighbor ... it's so freakin' obvious!

Fizz - Gary Oldman ALL the way!  He's the greatest actor of all time.

Anyway ...

Script: Carrie Fisher (script doctor)
Director: Micheal Mann
Actors: Gary Oldman, Johnny Depp (the most underrated actor of all time)
Original Score: James Horner, Danny Elfman
Music by: Vanilla Ice
Sound Design: Ben Burt
Producers: -
Post Production: -

I don't much about [post] production so I left those blank and the Music by was just a joke!

Critics' Lounge / Re:Meet Brett Dip (animated)

I like the way this looks!

I would suggest overlapping the leg animations ... the left legs does it's whole walk cycle and then the right one does its walk cycle then it repeats ... that's kind of robotic.  If that's what you're going for you got it spot on!  I would suggest making them loop together.  I  made this small animation for another thread and it's not a very good animation but you'll see what I mean:

See how as the one leg is forward, the other is back?  That's what I mean.  Just a suggestion.  I really like the style and look/feel of your character.

EDIT - Just in the front animation :)

Good stuff:
I think it looks cool actually ... I look forward to seeing it in color.  Please post it when you have it in color?   ::)

Critiques:
- The perspective of the wall in the top/left hallway looks a little off ...
- The dark grey in the top/right background ... will that be colored a certain way?  It looks 'empty'.  Another cliff or something back there might be the only thing missing.
- Throw some more shading pixels into the skeleton because right now he looks a little 'lumpy'.
- The cracks in the walls might look better if they were straight lines with jagged angles on them.  But I'm not sure about that one.

keep up the good work!!

bspeers - there probably is a way to do it the way you said, but I could never find it.  I've had the same problem  before and the way I suggested was just about the only thing I could come up with that works!  Let me know how it works out for you!
