Everybody welcome Fred ...

"Hello Fred" chants the crowd ...

Sorry, but this guy inspired some chanting.  He looks evil ... like a devil worshiper or just an evil doer in general.  Why don't you hit us up with some info about Fred?

By the way ... if he is an evil character I love that his name is so simple.  It's not something like Dark Destroyer or something menacing sounding, he's just Fred.  Does he, by any chance, own and operate an evil petting zoo??

I love these little animations ... the only critique I would offer is that the sideways walking animation seems a little off.  Like the forward leg (his left) doesn't have the full range of motion that the back (right leg) does.

Now this can be easily explained away in that he was in a blood drinking accident in the 70's which injured his left leg and he just never fully recovered.

Critics' Lounge / Re:An attempt at tracing...

I love this style of art ... I did a LOT of tracing a few years back when I got my first Wacom tablet.  If I could remember the link ...

The only suggestion I would make (and this is 'cause it's what I did) was the I avoided doing more than two colors in one area.  Which you've done everywhere but with the hair shine ... you've got two colors blending into the black.  It jumped right out at me.  So my suggestion would be to either minimize the hair sheen to 1 color, or use 1 more level of shading on the rest of the pic.

This is just my thought ... but what do I know???   ;D

The Manchurian Candidate (1962)
Director: John Frankenheimer
Starring: Frank Sinatra, Janet Leigh, and Angela Lansbury.
I watched this movie on a recommendation and it was way worth it.
IMDB Entry: The Manchurian Candidate

That's about the only older movie I would strongly recommend that I don't think anybody mentioned before, but DG, Rince, Paranoia and others have suggested the obvious (and not so obvious) good ones.

DG - Ashby's Harold & Maude is a definate gem and certainly belongs on this list.  While the movie has always been somewhat disturbing to me, it's still a great movie.  Ruth Gordon was amazing.  She was also good in Rosemary's Baby (1968) by the great (and child molesting) Roman Polanski.

Pestilence - I'm glad you mentioned To Kill A Mockingbird.  It's such a great movie based on an even greater book by Harper Lee.  To any who haven't read/seen this gem ... DO IT NOW!!!

Now, as far as 'older movies' ... I would consider these to be movies that were made all the way up into the 90's.  Because there are kids who post in these forums who were born in the 90's!!

My favorite movie:
The Last of the Mohicans (1992)
Director: Michael Mann
Starring: Daniel Day Lewis, Madeline Stowe, Eric Schweig, and Jodhi May
The subtle (but incredibly powerful) love story between Alice and Uncas is just amazing and the fact the Eric Schweig (Uncas) and Jodhi May (Alice) were able to convey this powerful emotion without speaking is incredible.  The fire of romance between DDL and Madeline Stowe is so powerful and full of drama it gives me goosebumps.  When she goes to see him (when he's in the brig) and she says, "The whole world's on fire" ... very powerful.
NOTE - If you're a fan of the original version of this movie don't waste your time with the DVD ... for whatever reason it's been incredibly altered.  Why they did this I don't know ... but it destroyed the movie (in my opinion).
IMDB Entry: The Last of the Mohicans

Other recommendations:
The Natural (1984, Barry Levinson)
Red Dawn (1984, John Milius)
Big Trouble in Little China (1986, John Carpenter)
The Princess Bride (1987, Rob Reiner)
Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead (1995, Gary Fleder)
Dangerous Beauty (1998, Marshall Herskovitz)
Harrison's Flowers (2000, Elie Chouraqui)

These are all I'm going to list now ... cause this is turning into a novel.  I could go on and on and on ...

Critics' Lounge / Re:a picture of a sword

I like it on first impression.

Maybe (if it's supposed to be pointing away) you could add a slight gradient to the blade as it extends out.

Or, if you're wanting to use less colors, you should do what Mikko suggested and make the bottom of the hilt bigger than the top of the hilt.  It would make it more obvious that the sword is on an angle.

Also, the pommel (I think it's called, the part at the top of the hilt that extends out and up and is gold colored and pointy); I would make the spots where it connects to the hilt a little thicker ... but that's just me being picky!

Darth... I like your sprites, but I want to paint the big fish by myself ;)

Thanks, and I totally understand you wanting to do the 'big fish'!

I Can't wait to see your version.

EDIT - I'm getting errors and a lot of the pix aren't showing up ... dammit!!  I want to see your new character(s)!!!!

Geoffkhan - I like what you've done ... I also like the original one too.

I decided to make mine a little more pixelly looking ...

My other ones were too big and too detailed I think.  These fit better with what you've done so far.

I like the creature with the axe.  It looks like the character in Titan AE (the one voiced by Janine Garafola).  So if you need reference for animation and the like you should check out that movie (if you haven't already seen it that is)

I'd like to see the animation of the super pixelated creature ... could be interesting.

For these two sprites I did use photo reference, because I wanted to get the uniforms accurate.  But sometimes I just like to create my own (though they don't usually look as good).

My sprite skills aren't quite up there yet.

Xad - I noticed he was leaning too ... perhaps he's drunk?

Here's another one I just whipped up.  It's a member of the US 101st Airborne.

Farlander - I had a few extra minutes ...

Not crazy about the pants or the boots ... but I think the head/face is pretty spot on.  You can use this if you want or not if you don't.  I just wanted to play around with some more sprite art.

So you mean he'd start off as a Wehrmacht soldier, who doesn't agree with Hitler and his ideology but he doesn't know why?

I wasn't real happy with the 'hit in the head' idea either, but I thought that's what you wanted :)  So perhaps think of a different way to have him remember his mission?

I thought it would be a cool thing to have the time frame in there because you could always keep track of what date it is, and the time when you have to kill Hitler is also displayed ... maybe like a count down ...

dm

EDIT - By the way ... did you see this animation I posted above?

This game looks like it's going to have a definate style to it ... I like the screenies so far.  It reminds me very much of the colors used in Space Quest III (the best Adventure Game ever)  Very EGA ... I totally dig it!

Can't wait to see more!

Not too bad!  The perspective might be off just a bit on some of the objects ... but the look of it has a 'feel' to it.

Was there a fight in the room or something?  A lot of chairs are knocked over.

I would add some stuff to the walls; light switches, pictures, trimming, etc.  Stuff like that ... and perhaps a light fixture or ceiling fan.

I totally dig where this is headed ...

How 'bout this:

You play a character (the Mossad agent) who travels back in time with a mission to infiltrate the German army and get close enough to Hitler to whack the bastard.  They (your bosses) have specified the date by which you must accomplish this.

When you start the game though, you're a dedicated Nazi.  The reason is because, in your attempt to get close to Hitler (showing your 'false' dedication) you were taken by force and brainwashed by the SS into being a fanatically loyal Nazi.  (It could be something their evil scientists were doing behind the scenes to make the armies more loyal).  They didn't know you were a spy (assassin), it's just something they were experimenting with.  You have no memory (yet) of the experiment being done to you.

So you start off completely loyal to Hitler and the Nazi party.  Maybe even do a few parts of the game as a Nazi, doing evil things, being a sick Nazi bastard.  You could even put in elements of the main character having nightmares about what he's done/doing, but he doesn't understand because he's so loyal to the Nazis.  But then, in a Allied bombing raid you receive a nasty blow to the head and the brainwashing is erased ... you remember your mission now ... But the time frame is much closer and you don't have a lot of time to accomplish your mission.

Also, all the differences you described (between actual history and your story) are still there.  When you come off the brainwashing you realize that the time line has been altered because you came back in time ...  So in effect, you caused the differences in history.  You, as loyal brainwashed Nazi accomplished things that wouldn't have happened if you hadn't traveled back in time ...

So at this point you could 'branch' the story ... either you fix the time line and not kill Hitler (because, in a moment of morality, you realize you have no right to effect history like this) or you say screw it, this is for the best, and you whack Hitler and leave the past altered and worry about it later.

The second option could lead into a really interesting sequel to the game that takes place present day, but the world is a different place because you killed Hitler ... and you're the only one who knows it ... so you once again travel back in time ... this time to stop yourself from killing Hitler ...hahaah!!

Farlander - Fu#*ing WOW ... these are kick a$$!!

I can't wait to see this game develop!!

Don't worry about the Nazi stuff, I think most intelligent people here aren't offended by it.  We know you aren't givin' props to them or anything :)  They're an integral part of the game, so they should be done right.  And I think I speak for most here when I say you're doing it very right!

Keep up the great work man!  This rocks so far!

dm

EDIT - This just begged me to work on it ... so I hope you don't mind!!

Farlander - I'm very impressed!  I would love to help out but between my own AGS project and the 'real-world' I don't know that I'd have any free time!

But great work on the sprites man!  Now really wow us with some animations!!!

dm

edit - I could be wrong, but the last soldier (smaller version) looks like his gun is missing?

rodekill - The tank smashing scene was very cool I agree.  And I think Eric Bana did a great job with the emotion of the character.

I just still thought it was far too boring ...

I've given it some thought and I think had I known going into see it that it wasn't an all out action film, but more of an emotional character driven story, I might have not been so bored.  But I was expecting more action.
