I always feel uneasy when I play a certain level in Thief: Deadly Shadows (ie. Thief 3)

If you've played the game, I think you know which level I mean.

It's another piano tune... sorry...

Sure, porn is not directly harmful, but some people might be viewing these forums from work, and no boss likes seeing his employees looking at porn when they should be working.

NSFW is a nice acronym.

The norm is to wait until the day is over until judgement is passed, I believe. Every now and then there are some last minute entries.

I have a train to catch, so I'll keep this brief!

The theme for this tune contest is...

Evolution!

I'm not necessarily talking about evolution of the Darwin kind, so you Pastafarians are free to enter as well. What I mean is this: you start with a simple, recognizable theme. Let this theme evolve over time, add more instruments, change instruments, do whatever, and by the end you should have a completely different theme, different mood, different... something!

Are these rules too restrictive? Too open? Too vague? Well, I guess I'll find out in due time! GO, MY CHILDREN.

------

Yes, my children! I have decided on a winner.

The winner is Helm!

But it was a somewhat close call! I enjoyed Fuzzpilz' tune too, and would really like to hear a full-fledged finished version of it, because boy do I love your drums.

Progzmax' tune was nice too, but I didn't really feel like it evolved. The beginning and the end sound pretty much the same to me, with only a part in the middle that deviates somewhat from the theme.

I have to confess I don't "get" Nikolas' entry, at all. It didn't really evoke an emotion, and I didn't have any sense of where it was going. It was practically a pianist hitting random keys in my ears.

So there it is. Your turn, Helm!

... oh yeah. I totally forgot about this. I'll start one right away.

To each their own, but to me music is indeed just music, as you put it.

Which is why classical music still rocks and always will, for me. 90% of it is non-secular music, and the rest just have titles like "A song in D minor". If someone is unable to enjoy the music because of that, I pity them.

The best way to deal with a thread you don't like is of course to simply ignore it.

Which do you think is the better scenario:

"Hey look at me! This is a pointless thread!" - 0 replies

or

"Hey look at me! This is a pointless thread!" - 54 replies, 7 saying "lock this thread", 7 saying "don't pretend to be a moderator", 4 saying "what a waste of bandwith all these posts including mine are", 1 saying "bananas are delicious", 22 arguing about whether or not bananas actually are delicious, 11 more off-topic posts, 1 post saying "bush sux" and finally 1 where a moderator posts something and finally locks the thread.

I'd choose the first one.

(Oh, and btw, feel like posting "bananas are delicious" in this thread? Think it would be a funny post to counter this one? No. Please don't.)

Victory is sweet!

Keep your eyes peeled open. A new contest will... EMERGE.

Yep, I love the song. But oh my, how stupid that thread you linked to is, DG. Oh my! OH MY!!

I thought the major grief was that SA people had kindly asked ebaumsworld to take down content coming from SA (which ebaumsworld clearly state they will if asked), but they refused to, and instead added a redirect on their main site that pointed to SomethingAwful and used up lots of their bandwith.

Which is a very silly thing to do.

Edit: Forgot the rating!

Too obvious!

For future reference, this was not written by John Cleese.

It is, however, funnier if you imagine him reading it out loud.

What annoys me about games?

Orcs and World War 2, man. Orcs and World War 2. I've seen enough of those.

Quote from: m0ds on Mon 10/10/2005 20:38:01you just had to keep your finger on numpad 2 to keep it moving down

Hehe, you just described 80% of my QBasic games!

Technically, I guess I started on the C64 programming in basic, but those "games" were nothing more than slightly interactive crude ascii animations of stickmen.

I think both players and games need to evolve. I'm waiting for the perfect merge of action and adventure that will make everyone who play it say "Holy shit, that game was GREAT!" after they've played it, be they "adventure gamers" or "action gamers".

Fahrenheit was a step in the right direction but... eh. There's just something completely wrong about it that I'm unable to put my finger on. Perhaps it's all these small complaints I have that have somehow merged and become a big ball of 'meh'..

Games shouldn't have to be categorized as adventure games or action games. It would be so great if you could describe games just by saying what you do in them:

"Hey, played that game where you're a British spy in WW2?"
"There's this new game coming out, you're a private detective and have to solve cases."

You know, the way it used to be in the 80's/early 90's perhaps. But then of course it didn't matter, because all the games ended up being side-scrolling platformers anyway, but we're at a point where technology is really awesome, so if I play a game where I'm a spy I want it to be a game where I really am a spy, and do spy-ish things. Not an action game where I sneak around a little and shoot things, not an adventure game where I have unlimited time to solve unnecessary puzzles to open doors and, if the current adventure gaming trend is going to continue, stealth sections with horrible camera controls (good lord I hate sneaking bits where I can't even control the camera! If I'm going to have to sneak past someone I want to be able to look exactly at what I want to look, damnit! I'm looking at you, Fahrenheit and Broken Sword 3).

I just want a game where I become the character I play and do the kind of things he/she would do.

Quote from: ildu on Mon 26/09/2005 21:19:23So basically what I'm saying is, yes, games have and are getting shorter.
What? No... no no. I don't think that's true at all.

Just look at Sierra's Quest games. They're... so short! Have you replayed any of them lately? Aren't they over before you can even get into them? The reason we think games used to be longer is because we spent hours walking around not knowing what to do in them! Games are just easier now, not shorter!
#120
The old games are just as "short" as current games, it's just that the games are so easy nowadays. No unforgivable pixel-hunts, no impossible arcade sequences, people just want to click somewhere and win the game.
