Critics' Lounge / Background - WIP
Wed 21/11/2007 22:09:26
I started on a background for the game for the characters I've been working on (see http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=32866.0 ).

It's very much a work in progress, as I haven't started filling in the details.

I'm looking for feedback on the layout of the scene, and the basic colours. Also I'm curious if people see what it's meant to be.  ;D

I would have gone for more pixels :) It's very hard to pixel a character this small.

Her pose is a bit manly. But overall nice start.

Another thing: try making the character not too symmetrical. Now the body looks like it's mirrored in the middle. It makes a character looks less natural.

If she would lean a bit more on one leg, she would look more natural and less manly.

A hydra (with terrible lineart  :-\ )

The line-art is fine if you ask me. What could help is replacing the outline colour with a slightly lighter dark green.

I like all the entries so far. Makes me wish I didn't rush mine. :)

Habit is a repetitive good act, like sport, or washing your teeth after each meal.

That's just semantics.

And I must say that using shrooms just a couple of times per year, and than months in a row not, is one of the more mature forms of recreative drugs taking.

I'm not in the pro or anti drugs camp, I'm mostly in the 'let every one decide for themselves if, when and how they want to get fucked up, as long as they don't harm anyone else'-camp.
All the drugs I do is some alcohol. Which is far nastier than shrooms btw.

I rather have hints than a complete walkthrough. If I start using a walkthrough for a game, usually every time I get stuck I immediately grab the walkthrough.  ::)

Heh, Monkey Island took me and my brother weeks (that was ofcourse in the pre-internet era), because we only got some hints and tips from game magazines.

But... but... that's what he said, that he uses mshrooms because it' s interesting, no?  ???

Well, you play adventure games because you find that intersting, does that make you boring?

It's difficult for me to think that people wouldn't get such an experience. Of course wrongly used or if you arent strong minded (I dont mean that there are 'strong minded' and 'weak minded' persons, i just dont have better word for it) the experience can be very scary and bad, but i have never heard that anyone would think it wasnt learning.

I'm Dutch, and I did try it a few times in my late teens. Was fun, wasn't very learning. It seemed me and my friends who tried it together understood each other completely and we were so deep.
Well, we wrote stuff down, and when we were sober again, it was just bullshit.

It's just like cannabis, people think they're very insightful when they use it, but that's just a cool effect and nothing more.

A satyr (or a faun).

Didn't count the colours, but I guess about 10.

Double size:

News headlines don't need presenting in such a fancy format, if you ask me. I want to be able to quickly scan the headlines.
This site would be far too slow for me to use daily. Using effects because they are cool, is a no-no in my book, cool effects should be only used if they add something.

I really like the background and the two characters, but there seems to be a bit of a style clash.

Your main character looks more cartoony, while the other character and the background look more realistic.

I guess the difference between the main character and the background wouldn't be so noticable if the other character also looked a bit  more cartoony.

The problem I have now, is that each change I make to 'fix' his posture seems to give him less character.

I like the one one the left better, but that one does look weird when I mirror the image. The posture of the one on the right is better, but he looks less goofy. He almost starts to look smart.  ;D

Pff, maybe it's time to move to the next character and let this one rest, but if someone has anymore input, I'd love to hear it. :)

Cool, I was planning on trying one episode out!

One small tip:

to make your images look smoother try to avoid 'double pixels'. I cut one example from your image and showed how you could do it differently.

I changed the proportions a bit: smaller torso, higher knees, moved the head slightly.

I also tried to do some simple shading.

Any comments are welcome!

Also, big monitors playing low resolution simply looks horrid. The pixel size, huh...

Which is why I usually play games in windowed mode. That looks pretty decent most of the time.

GK3?

I'd assume it's Gabriel Knight, but would it hurt to write it out at least once.

Nice edit, Ben!

Two major improvements if you'd ask me:
- Less saturated colours
- Less symmetry: the picture doesn't look like it's mirrored horizontically, which makes it a bit more exciting to look at.

It's a bit too dark too see the details right. Try making it look like night by using much blue colours.

(Google for 'monkey island screenshots' for some inspiration colour wise).

I didn't do the face (you're right it's the hardest part  ;D) but I did make some simple changes to the tunic.

I'm not the best artist, but I tried to make the shadows look like there's a lightsource from the right.

At least you got it now.  ;D

I must admit, I try such weird things in adventures, and forget to try the simplest things.
